According to the Save the Children's statistics, around 3.5 million children die in a year because of malnutrition. In India alone, one million children's lives could be saved every year if they were not malnourished.

"HALF WIDOWS" SUFFERING, STRUGGLES IN KASHMIR

By Shagufta Ashraf, Kashmir Institute of International Relations & Lecturer at AJK University.

Because of protracted conflict in Kashmir for 22 years, there are currently over 1500 "half widows" - wives of disappeared or missing husbands, in India's Kashmir. These "half widows" face economic, social, and emotional hardships, plus physical and mental health issues. Their children suffer multiple adverse effects.

BECAUSE I AM A GIRL, I MUST STUDY - POEM

A father asks his daughter:Study? Why should you study?I have sons aplenty who can studyGirl, why should you study? The daughter tells her father:Since you ask, here’s why I must study.Because I am a girl, I must study. Long denied this right, I must studyFor my dreams to take flight, I must studyKnowledge brings new light, so I must studyFor the battles I must fight, I must studyBecause I am a girl, I must study.

To avoid destitution, I must studyTo win independence, I must studyTo fight frustration, I must studyTo find inspiration, I must studyBecause I am a girl, I must study.

To fight men’s violence, I must studyTo end my silence, I must studyTo challenge patriarchy I must studyTo demolish all hierarchy, I must study.Because I am a girl, I must study. To mould a faith I can trust, I must studyTo make laws that are just, I must studyTo sweep centuries of dust, I must studyTo challenge what I must, I must studyBecause I am a girl, I must study. To know right from wrong, I must study. To find a voice that is strong, I must studyTo write feminist songs I must studyTo make a world where girls belong, I must study.Because I am a girl, I must study. -- Kamla Bhasin
