Introduction-The Cult of True Womanhood: formed in the 1820s and 1830s based on the idea that women were pious, a submissive wife, and mother concerned exclusively with family and home.-National American Woman Suffrage Association: formed in 1890 by merging two suffragist groups with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as the presidents of it believing that women and men were created equal.-World War I slowed the campaign but helped them advance their argument.-Because they helped the cause during the war, they argued that they could be seen as patriotic. -Got their citizenship and voting rights equal to men

Important Leaders-Elizabeth Cady Stanton: president of the National Woman Suffrage Society-Susan B. Anthony: pioneer crusader for women’s suffrage movement and president of the National Woman Suffrage Society.-Amelia Jenks Bloomer: president of Iowa suffrage society and got women to vote in Ohio

Important Movements1910- some Western states began to let women vote for the first time in 20 years (Idaho and Utah); more established Eastern and Southern states resisted

1916- NAWSA president Carrie Chapman Catt devised what she believed was a “winning plan”; “Winning Plan”: a blitz campaign that mobilized and local suffrage organizations with special on recalcitrant regions.

Connection to Jacksonian Democracy- The age of Jackson was about the common man gaining

power or say in government. During this time period, women’s rights were becoming more recognized.
