In one of its most challenging non-conference schedules in school history, Liberty has faced some of the top teams throughout the East Coast. Of the eight teams that Liberty will face during its non-conference slate, seven of the teams currently have winning records with five teams currently in the top four of their conference standings.As head coach, Lang Wedemeyer, continues to rely on his depth, playing 25 players this season the offense has seen many different players look to score. In eight games this, 18 players have attempted a shot this season and seven players have recorded a point this year. The Lady Flames will look to attack on offense as they have this season attempting 91 shots, which ranks fourth in the Big South. The Lady Flames will look to improve in the second half as the eight of 11 goals they have given up have taken place in the second half.

SERIES HISTORY • Liberty is 2-6 all-time against James Madison. Last

year Liberty defeated JMU 1-0 in Lynchburg.

TABLE OF CONTENTSNEW ERA OF LIBERTY SOCCER Lang Wedemeyer enters his first season at the helm for Liberty women’s soccer as he looks continue a tradition of success that the Lady Flames have built. Wedemeyer comes to Liberty following a highly success-ful 17-year run as the head women’s soccer coach at South Dakota State. During his time at the helm of the Jackrabbits’ program, Wedemeyer led South Dakota State to four Summit League championships and trips to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship (2008, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

QUEST FOR 3PEATDespite having its third head coach in three straight seasons, the Lady Flames looks for its third straight Big South title in as many years. Liberty is looking to become the first school in Big South Conference history to win back-to-back-to-back Big South titles. At the beginning of August, the Lady Flames were picked to finish first in the Big South Preseason Poll.

THE GREAT 8 - SENIOR CLASSThe Lady Flames bring back a wealth of talent and experience as they are led by a veteran group. Out of the seven position players in Liberty’s senior class, every player played at least 10 or games last season. Of the 41 goals last year, the Lady Flames’ senior class scored 18 goals along with 19 of Liberty’s 40 assists in 2016. The senior class is also made up of three All-Big South selections and two Big South All-Tournament honorees.

HOME SWEET HOME Osborne Stadium has been proved to be one of the toughest places to play in the Big South Conference. Since 2014, the year this senior class has been at Liberty, the Lady Flames are 25-6-1. Liberty was impressive in 2016 posting a 9-2 record at home.

ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNEESLast year, Liberty garnered 10 Big South All-Conference selections. Returning to this year’s squad are six Big South selections led by the Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year, Jennifer Knoebel. Liberty returns two Big South First Team honorees in Gabrielle Farrell and Isabella Habuda.

FLAMES ON THE ROADIn one of the most challenging schedules in the program’s history, the Lady Flames will be tested on the road as they will have 12 games on the road this season. Liberty will be tested early in the season as they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to face Virginia, which goes into the season ranked No. 11 in the country. The Lady Flames will be tested with four straight road games starting with George Washington. During Big South contests, Liberty will have five road contests.

LADY FLAMES’ POTENT OFFENSE Coach Wedemeyer will have plenty of weapons on offense at his disposal in his first season at Liberty. In 2016, Liberty ranked No. 36 in the country scoring 41 goals. Of the 41 goals scored last season, Liberty returns seven of the nine players that scored and 38 of the 41 goals posted. After scoring the most goals in the Big South, Liberty returns four players (Gabrielle Farrell, Isabella Habuda, Devon Jones, Jennifer Knoebel) that recorded seven or more goals, led by Habuda with 10 goals.

CHALLENGING SCHEDULEThe Lady Flames will look for a third straight NCAA College Cup appearance as their 18-game slate includes two teams that appeared in the College Cup, six teams with 11 wins or more last season and four teams that made it to the semifi-nals of their respective conference tournaments. Throughout the season, Liberty will play in seven different states, playing against some of the best competition throughout the East Coast.

WELCOME TO LIBERTY CLASS OF 2017Liberty women’s soccer have welcomed eight new players to its team from six different states. Liberty’s Class of 2017 is compiled of four defenders, a mid-fielder, a goalkeeper and two forwards. Not only have these student-athletes excelled on the field but also in the classroom as all eight have posted a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, including with three with a 4.0 GPA. This class is compiled of seven high school signees as well as a transfer in Sarah Erickson. The Flames have been able to recruit top talent through-out the country that have played in championship environments that include ECNL Championships and also State and Regional Cup finals.

PRESEASON WRAP-UPLiberty wrapped up a successful preseason where they com-peted in two exhibition matches. Seven days into preseason, the Lady Flames traveled to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech. The Lady Flames held their own, forcing a 1-1 tie against the Hokies in the exhibition match. After allowing a goal in the 39th minute, Liberty did not yield another goal to Virginia Tech and Sarah Erickson was able to provide the equalizer with 12.4 seconds left in the match. To conclude its preseason schedule, Liberty hosted George Mason. The Lady Flames’ offense was on display scoring three goals and providing another thriller late in the game. With one second left on the clock, Isabella Habuda was able to get off a shot that ended in the back of the net to give Liberty the 3-2 win over George Mason.

LADY FLAMES TABBED FIRST IN BSCThe Lady Flames have been picked first in the 2017 Big South Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll. Of the 10 votes in the preseason poll, the Lady Flames received eight first-place votes. The only other team to receive first-place votes was High Point. Liberty is seeking its third straight Big South title and NCAA College Cup appear-ance, which would be a first in conference history. Last year, Liberty collected its sixth Big South title, setting a new conference standard for team titles. Liberty garnered 98 total votes in the poll, followed by High Point in second place with 92 votes. Campbell finished a distant third with 68 votes, while Radford (64 votes) and Longwood (62 votes) followed closely behind.

KNOEBEL NAMED BSC POYLiberty senior forward Jennifer Knoebel has been selected as the Big South Women’s Soccer Preseason Attacking Player of the Year. Knoebel has proven to be one of the best offensive weapons during her three years in the Big South, tallying 17 career goals to go along with 21 assists. Last season, Knoebel stepped up during Big South play, earning Big South Tournament MVP after scoring three goals in addition to two assists to aid the Lady Flames in their title run.

Liberty University Director of Athletics Ian McCaw announced the hiring of Lang Wedemeyer as Liberty’s new head women’s soccer coach on Jan. 31, 2017. Wedemeyer is the eighth in the program’s history.

Wedemeyer comes to Liberty following a highly successful 17-year run as the head women’s soccer coach at South Dakota State. During his time at the helm of the Jackrabbits’ program, Wedemeyer led South Dakota State to four Summit League championships and trips to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship (2008, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

Wedemeyer has his U.S. Soccer “A” License, his NSCAA Premier diploma, an NSCAA Level 3 Goalkeeper diploma and a U.S. Youth Soccer National license. Throughout his coaching career, Wedemeyer has been around elite competition coaching against youth national teams in the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Belgium with ODP Regional teams.

During his 17 seasons at South Dakota State, Wedemeyer posted a 161-123-39 record, including 10 seasons with 10 or more victories. During the Jackrabbits’ run of three-straight Summit League titles, South Dakota State has posed a 32-21-9 record the last three years.

In addition to four postseason championships, Wedemeyer guided South Dakota State to Summit League regular season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Additionally, his squad captured a United Soccer Conference championship in 2006 prior to South Dakota State joining the Summit League in 2007.

Wedemeyer helped start the South Dakota State program in 2000 and guided the program through its transition to Division I in 2004. He has been honored for his coaching success, earning Summit League Coach of the Year honors in 2013 and 2014.

Additionally, he was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 2001 and South Dakota Sportswriters Women’s College Coach of the Year in 2008.

Wedemeyer has coached three Summit League Offensive Players of the Year and two Defensive Players of the Year. He also helped develop the skills of the 2012 Summit League Freshman of the Year.

Under his tutelage, 61 of Wedemeyer’s players have earned all-conference honors, including 27 first-team selections, 18 second-team honorees and 16 newcomers/freshman team members.

Wedemeyer’s teams have also had success in the classroom with his squads receiving the NSCAA Team Academic Award nine times (2006-07, 2009-14, 2016). Two of his former players have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, while 10 players have earned CoSIDA All-District accolades.

In addition to his 17 years of service at South Dakota State, Wedemeyer has worked with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as a national staff coach, conducting coaching certification and running clinics over the past 20 years.

Wedemeyer, a native of Roanoke, Va., began his collegiate playing career at Virginia Tech where he was voted the Hokies top defensive player in 1991 and 1992. He finished out his career at Old Dominion where he served as a team captain and was a 1994 CoSIDA Academic All-America second-team honoree.
