Back-to-back NCAA National Championship tournamentappearances, five of the past seven NIIC ConferenceChampionships, a 25 game unbeaten streak in NIICconference play on the line, and still the Spartans are notsatisfied with that track record. After completing a 19-3season (good enough for ninth in the nation in the finalNCAA rankings last season), the AU women’s soccer teamwants to accomplish more, much more, before they will saythey are satisfied.

This is the tenth season for the women’s soccer programat Aurora University. With an overall nine-year record of112-48-9 (.689), the Spartans have enjoyed eight consecutivewinning seasons, five NIIC Conference Championships, andtwo NCAA tournament appearances. In the first nine years,AU has produced one All-American, two Academic All-Americans, four All-Region players, four NIIC Players-of-the-Year, and 46 NIIC All-Conference players.

Nationally prominent, nationally ranked, and nationallyrecognized for their accomplishments, the Spartans preferto raise the bar even higher. Not willing to accept less thanthey are capable of, they are determined to set a standardthat other Spartan soccer teams will find difficult to achieve,if not impossible.

Head Coach Kanute Drugan believes the Spartanmindset supports that determination. “We believe we needto expect things of ourselves before we can do them,” saidDrugan. “We want to hold ourselves to a higher standardthan anybody expects of us. We make no excuses forourselves. We just get out and try to get it done.”

Getting it done may prove a little more difficult for theSpartans with the loss to graduation of five of the mostaccomplished Spartans in their team’s history. At least thatis what most observers might expect. Drugan doesn’t see itthat way. “Human will can be a powerful energy. Justhaving a strong enough will to achieve often will get it donefor you. One thing I know to be true with this team is theyhave the will to become the best they can become.”

In fact, the standard of success has already beendetermined through a decade of outstanding achievementfor the program. Drugan confidently stated that “this teamexpects to raise the bar. They are determined to try to dojust that. I believe they will. There are so many wonderfultraditions in our women’s soccer program, but one of themis that each graduating class is challenged to determinewhat they want their class to accomplish in their four years

RAISE THE BAR!

“Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat;long is the road thereto, and rough and steep at first;but, when the heights are reached, then there is ease,

though grievously hard in the winning.”- Hesiod, Works and Days

here. Where do they want to leave the bar? What do theywant their graduating legacy to be? Once you commit to it,then suddenly, you get anxious and focused on getting itdone.”

A close look at this year's Spartans reveals that theyappear to have the talent to get it done. They have anexperienced group of seven seniors to provide leadership, and an exceptionally talented freshman and sophomoregroup to support that leadership.

Leading the Spartans this season will be senior co-captains, Laura Bozek (Lyons Township HS, Indian HeadPark, IL), a three-year NIIC All-Conference midfielder andHeather Guetschow (Dundee-Crown HS, Carpentersville,IL), a three-year starter at the stopper position. Bozek andGuetschow, along with the other three-year starter ChelseaLloyd (South HS, Crystal Lake, IL), are three of those sevenseniors that will play a prominent leadership role for theSpartans. Starting forward and NIIC All-Conferenceselection, senior Carmen Zobel (Lewiston HS, ID) tallied 16goals as a junior and will carry much of the scoring load.Seniors Melissa Hart (Griffith HS, IN), Janneth Velazquez(Kelly HS, Chicago, IL), and Kate Barnidge (SoldanInternational HS, St. Louis, MO) add substantial varsityexperience to the Spartan line-up.

AU’s sophomores return three starters from last season.Goalkeeper Alicia Martin (Lake Park HS, Roselle, IL) set anew Spartan record for shut-outs (12). She will look forsupport again from returning marking backs Allison Banta(Griffith HS, IN) and Corey Krysiak (Thomas More HS,Milwaukee, WI). Sophomores Meghan Stoltman (JacobsHS, Algonquin, IL), Lynn Sukach (Ann Arbor Huron HS,Ypsilanti, MI), and Abby Wackerly (Alton MarquetteCatholic HS, Godfrey, IL) received significant playing timeas freshmen and will be competing for starting roles thisseason. Forward Kym Smith (Pewaukee HS, Waukesha, WI)and wing Jenn Garlinsky (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, IL)

should also compete for starting roles vacated bygraduation.

Boasting of a heavy imprint from beyond the Illinoisborders, the Spartans once again secured a superbrecruiting class. Providing international experience,Melanie Lopes (Baulkham Hills HS, New South Wales,Australia) will be a freshman to watch this season. She joinsKentucky Olympic Development Program (ODP) andSecond Team All-State forward Anna Wallace (Madisonville-North Hopkins HS, Madisonville, KY) as two of the morehighly acclaimed freshmen. Other out-of-state importsexpected to make an impact will be Erin Kwiatkowski(Rockford HS, Rockford, MI), Amanda Haines (NorthMuskegon HS, North Muskegon, MI), Lauren Thomas(Thomas More HS, Milwaukee, WI), Kristen Buehler(Griffith HS, IN), and Stephanie Springman (Hobart HS,IN).

Leading the way for the home-state recruits will be localproducts Morgan Roewer (Woodstock HS, IL), ShalisseMathieu (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, IL), ShannaThorpe (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, IL), Shari Sterling(Glenbard East HS, Lombard, IL), and Tara Klotz (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, IL). Downstate stand-outs Ashley Camillo(Collinsville HS, IL) and Ashley Steiling (St. Teresa HS,Decatur, IL) should also contribute right away. The otherfreshman seeking a varsity spot will be Lindsay Carlson(Stillman Valley HS, IL).

Transfers to AU that are expected to contribute rightaway are Jessica Reczek (Fremd HS, Harper CC, Palatine,IL), Krista Lessmeister (Plainfield HS, Waubonsee CC,Plainfield, IL), and Hilary O’Friel (Dixon HS, Sauk Valley CC,Dixon, IL).

Aurora has a deep and talented roster that is motivatedand determined to succeed beyond the levels of the past. And if past history is evidence, then expect to see them“Raise the Bar”.
