INTRODUCTION

The collections of the Austin History Center contain valuable research materials that document the lives and activities of Austin women from primarily the mid-19th century to the present time. The materials in this resource guide are arranged by collection unit. Within each collection unit, items are arranged in shelf-list order. Note, all category listings are by no means exhaustive or complete. Rather, they are meant to highlight a selection of collections that could be of value or interest to researchers investigating history related to women in the Austin/Travis County area.

The purpose of the Austin History Center is to provide customers with information about the history and current events of Austin and Travis County by collecting, organizing, and preserving research materials and assisting in their use.

The Archives and Manuscripts Collection contains primary research materials about people, organizations, governments, and businesses in Austin and Travis County. The collections below are arranged by call number. For detailed information about specific collections, please refer to the archives finding aids located in the AHC Reading Room. AR.A.001 Pease-Graham-Niles Papers, 1834 – 1972 Includes the correspondence between Lucadia Pease, wife of Texas Governor Elisha Marshal Pease, and her family in Connecticut, as well as the correspondence of her daughters Carrie and Julia; drawings of Julia Maria Pease; correspondence with friend and noted sculptress Elisabet Ney; Lucadia’s voluminous correspondence to family members back east documents the early life of women living in Austin during the 1850s-1890s. AR.A.002 Rebecca J. Fisher Papers, 1847 – 1923 Correspondence, calling cards, invitations, creative works, and financial records document the community and political involvement of “The Mother of Texas”; includes letters from sculptress Elisabet Ney. AR.A.007 Ruth and Hal Bybee Papers, 1939 – 1955 Documents the civic activities of activist Ruth Bybee; includes correspondence, minutes, financial material, brochures, and reports related to AISD, YWCA, and the Austin Community Chest and Council. AR.A.015 Wagner-Williams Papers, 1883 – 1944 Includes registers from Minnie Wood Wagner’s rooming house and from her grandmother Sarah Caroline Williams Granberry House.

AR.A.016 Emily Numbers Papers Includes a ledger from the Numbers School, minutes of the Teachers of West Austin, a sketchbook, and teaching certificates.

AR.A.020 McNeill-Hume Family Papers Includes materials related to Winfred McNeil’s time at the Training Camp for Nurses at Vassar College during World War I.

AR.C.001 Collins Papers, 1842 – 1963 Includes correspondence and creative writing documenting Edna Collins’ career as a painter; includes correspondence of her mother Helena Gertrude Collins, a prominent Austin musician. A guide to the collection is available on Texas Archival Resources Online.

AR.C.003 Gardner Papers, 1900 – 1956 Box 2 documents the community involvement of Elizabeth Fromme Gardner from 1941 to 1956: Austin Community Guidance Center, Texas Society for Mental Hygiene, the Federated Women’s Club, and Zeta Tau Alpha. AR.D.004 Spence Papers, 1880 - 1890 Includes correspondence of Margaretta Deaderick to her son, including a letter that describes coming to Texas.

AD.D.009 Brackenridge, LaPrelle, and Talbot Family Papers, 1839 – 1955 Includes correspondence of Eleanor Brackenridge LaPrelle (1837-1924) and her childhood diary from 1896. She was an advocate for women’s rights both in Texas and nationally. She was among the first women to sit on the governing board of a Texas university, the College of Industrial Arts, a state-supported college for women which later became Texas Woman’s University and was active in many clubs including the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Texas Mothers' Congress, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Presbyterian Church. She was a firm believer in prohibition and a strong supporter of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. A guide to the collection is available on Texas Archival Resources Online.

AR.E.004 Jane Yelvington Legette McCallum Papers, 1815-1967 Papers document the women’s suffrage movement in Texas and its history, McCallum’s personal and professional life, and Minnie Fisher Cunningham’s political life after suffrage. Fisher Cunningham was a colleague in the suffrage movement and a close personal friend of McCallum’s. She was active for decades in both national and Texas state politics. In 1928, Cunningham became the first woman from Texas to run for the United States Senate. The collection includes over 35,000 items, with materials relating to the Texas Woman Suffrage Association, Texas Equal Suffrage Association, and the National American Woman Suffrage Association. It also includes material documenting McCallum’s tenure as the first Texas female Secretary of State (under Dan Moody), participation in governors’ races, her involvement in Austin politics, specifically on the first Austin City Planning Commission and the Women's Committee on Educational Freedom, and her weekly Austin American-Statesman column, “Women and Her Ways”. AR.E.006 Urbantke Family Papers, 1870 – 1956 Includes materials relating to Elsie Urbantke and Hilda Urbantke; two scrapbooks document Hilda’s involvement in golf, and another scrapbook documents Elsie’s education at UT medical school and her war service.

AR.H.001 Carrington Papers, 1845 – 1990 Includes letters written by Martha Hill Carrington to her husband Leonides Carrington while she was waiting to deliver her first child.

AR.H.004 Austin City Council PTA Association Records, 1919 – 1990 Includes minutes (dating back to 1919), correspondence, printed materials, financial documents, and maps documenting the ACC-PTA, an umbrella organization for Austin PTA groups.

AR.H.006 Mary Kennerly Cloud Papers, 1840 – 1951 Personal papers include correspondence, “Bill of Sale for a Negro Girl” (1840), manuscripts and notes, printed materials, invitations, and brochures; business papers include those related to the Texas Republic Museum (1892 – 1949), the Texas Centennial (1924 – 1937), and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (1930s – 1940s). AR.H.008 Hart Family Papers, 1794-1984 The Harts are an Austin family whose involvement in Travis County politics and civic life span over five generations. Material related to Katherine Drake Hart (1905-2000), first curator/manager of the Austin Travis County Collection (now the Austin History Center) is included.

AR.H.016 Brooke Papers Includes two compositions written by Florence Ralston Brooke in 1875; also includes a diary kept by her mother H. Ralston at the time of her coming to America in 1834.

AR.H.037 Elisabet Ney vs. Reinhold: Haschke Documents, 1895 – 1899 Contains documents relating to a lawsuit between Ney, the sculptor, and Haschke.

AR.J.006 Elisabet Ney Papers, 1892-1905 The collection is composed of letters written by sculptor Elisabet Ney during the time she lived and worked in Austin, Texas, 1892-1905.

AR.N.004 Housewives League of Austin Records, 1917-1920 Organizational records related to issues post WW I including the Milk Fund, child welfare work, the city’s ordinance defining food safety and products, sanitation and the water supply.

AR.O.001 Twentieth Century Study Club Papers, 1936-1990 The Twentieth Century Study Club formed in the fall of 1936 by twelve women interesting in creating a study club with the objective to promote culture and mutual improvement through the study of various types of literature. The collection contains meeting minutes, club yearbooks and three scrapbooks that span the years 1936 to 1990.

AR.O.004 American History Club Records, 1893-2005 The American History Club was formed in Austin in 1893 by eight women for the study of American History. The collection is composed of research papers on various topics in American History written and presented by members during club meetings as well as minutes, financial records, correspondence and printed material. It also contains documents that reflect activities in special civic projects and with affiliate organizations including the Austin Women's Club, the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

AR.P.009 Ava Crofford “Portraits of Women” Photograph Collection, 1978 A collection of 50 photographs of notable women. A guide to the collection is available on Texas Archival Resources Online.

AR.R.012 Women’s Equality Day Papers, 1973 – 1979 Documents the Women’s Equality Day project, which commemorated women winning the right to vote and chronicled the history of suffrage and women’s rights in Austin; includes materials related to Ann Richards, Liz Carpenter, Ada Simond, Sarah Weddington, and Ruthe Winegarten, along with many women’s organizations. AR.S.012 Mary Jane Bode Papers, 1977 – 1980 Documents the political life of Bode, her campaigns, and her legislative career; includes letters, diaries, campaign materials, speeches, newsletters, phone records, and financial documents.

AR.V.006 Mary Starr Barkley Papers, 1836– 1981 Correspondence, notes, printed material, photographs, creative works, manuscripts, and scrapbooks document activities of Mary “Mamie” Barkley, author, activist and local historian. Barkley wrote predominantly about Austin and surrounding communities and often referred to herself as a “housewife-historian”. Her book, History of Travis County and Austin: 1839-1899 remains one of the few comprehensive publications related to Austin for that time period. AR.W.002 The Dorothy and Terrell Blodgett Papers, 1947-2012 Part of this collection documents Dorothy’s work as a respected freelance writer and promotional professional beginning in the 1950s. She worked with J. J. "Jake" Pickle (then in public relations) and George Christian on Price Daniel's 1956 gubernatorial campaign. This began a long time association, both professional and personal, with Pickle. She went on to work for three

Texas governors: John Connally, Mark White and Bill Clements. She also

taught in the journalism departments at Baylor University and the University of Texas in the 1960s. She was a member of many organizations over the years, including the Austin History Center Association, the Texas Oral History Association, the Texas State Historical Association, the University Ladies Club and Theta Sigma Phi, the fraternity for Women in Journalism (later named Women in Communication, Inc.).

AR.W.003 Jean Mather Papers, 1957-1985 Long-time South Austin resident involved in neighborhood planning, city planning and environmental concerns. Her papers consist of meeting minutes and agendas, newsletter and mailing drafts, newspaper clippings, and proposed zoning-change announcements that document her involvement with the South River City Citizens (SRCC), the Women's Environmental Coalition (WE Care Austin), and other local organizations in the 1970s and 1980s. AR.X.009 Austin Art League – Group V Records, 1927 – 1977 Includes minutes, financial records, correspondence, by-laws, and other printed materials; related materials in Austin Art League Group I Records (AR.1991.027) and Group III Records (AR.1991.031).

AR.Z.001 Eloise Roach Papers, 1853 – 1980s Roach’s professional life as a translator, educator, and writer is documented; she is known for translating the work of Nobel Laureate Juan Ramon Jiminez, particularly Platero y Yo (Platero and I). AR.Z.002 Orr, Huberich and Barton Family Papers, 1864 – 1965 This collection includes correspondence of Laura Orr, Bess Evans, Laura “Lollie” (Orr) Huberich, and May Bessie (Huberich) Gibson; Lollie Huberich’s correspondence documents her divorce, the school she established, “Mrs. Hubert’s School” on the grounds of the family home on Pearl Street, and May Bessie Gibson’s correspondence documents life during World War II. AR.Z.006 Ada Simond Papers, 1892 - 1979 Photographs, legal material and manuscripts document the work of African-American writer and educator Ada Simond. The bulk of the collection concerns the Let’s Pretend series of children’s books written by Simond about a young African-American girl and her family growing up in Austin during the early twentieth century. AR.Z.010 Purcell Family Papers, 1805-1985 Materials gathered by Mabelle and Stuart Purcell for two manuscripts authored by Mabelle, Two Texas Female Seminaries and This is Texas (co-authored with Stuart). After receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1936, Mabelle and her family moved with her family to Austin, later acquiring a master’s degree in educational psychology from UT in 1951. Mabelle worked as a teacher at the Texas School for the Deaf and also developed an interest about the history of education in Texas, later authoring This is Texas (1977) and Two Texas Female Seminaries (1951).

AR.Z.011 Austin Women in Architecture Papers Administrative records document the activities of the organization from its creation in 1983 to 1986.

AR.1991.005 Ruth Bain Papers, 1954 – 1991 Ruth Bain was a physician, professor, and an active participant in community organizations, including the Travis County Medical Society, Soroptimist International Club, the Zonta Club, the YWCA, and the Austin Council for Retarded Children. She served as the first female president of the Travis County Medical Society, 1962-63, and on the Texas Medical Association, 1982. AR.1991.010 Mildred Paxton Moody Papers, 1927 – 1979 Clippings, photographs, correspondence, and other printed materials document the activities of Mildred Moody, wife of Governor Dan Moody, and her daughter Nancy.

AR.1991.011 Ann Fears Crawford Papers, 1880 – 2004 Includes manuscripts printed material, correspondence, clippings, and photographs by local author.

AR.1991.012 Maline McCalla Papers, 1973-1989 Collection documents McCalla’s volunteer work as a leader in Austin’s celebrations of the American Bicentennial, the Texas Sesquicentennial, and the Austin Sesquicentennial during the 1970s and 1980s. Her work with performing arts organizations is represented, but is not the primary focus of the collection. A guide to the collection is available on Texas Archival Resources Online.

AR.1991.025 Sarah Ann Robertson Papers, 1955-1993 Unprocessed collection covers Robertson’s activities with the Austin Independent School district, desegregation in education, the Green Movement, and work with the nonprofit organization, the United Way.

AR.1991.026 Women’s Symphony League of Austin Records, 1953 – 2005 The Women's Symphony League of Austin (WSL) was established on June 18, 1953 with the stated purpose to promote the interests of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. The scrapbooks, yearbooks and programs in this collection span the years 1953-2005 and document the activities of the organization from its very beginnings. AR.1991.027 Austin Art League – Group I Records, 1914 – 2010 Includes correspondence, minutes (1951 – 1992), clippings, member biographies, and yearbooks (1921 –1991); related materials in Austin Art League – Group III Records (AR.1991.031) and Group V Records (AR.X.009).

AR.1991.041 Capital City Federated Business & Professional Women’s Club Records, 1963-1991 The organization was founded in June, 1964 to elevate the standards of women in business and promote the interests of professional women. AR.1991.042 Alpha Omicron Pi Mothers Club Records, 1944 – 1973 The Alpha Omicron Pi Mothers Club was founded in Austin in 1944 as a support organization of the Pi Kappa Chapter of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at the University of Texas at Austin. The meeting minutes, correspondence, financial documents, yearbooks and distributed information in this collection highlight the activities of the organization from 1944 to 1973. AR.1991.051 McBee Family Papers, 1930s – 1990s Includes materials related to Sue McBee, journalist and past president of the Austin History Center Association. Material reflects her interests in education, the arts, and historic preservation. Formats include posters, papers, periodicals, and printed material. Unprocessed.

AR.1991.062 United Daughters of the Confederacy—Albert Sydney Johnson Chapter 105 Records, 1926 –1967 Includes clippings, programs, member rosters, and photographs.

AR.1991.063 Austin Grandmother Club #204, 1953 – 1957 Includes clippings, roster, bylaws, and photographs.

AR.1991.075 Business and Professional Women’s Club of Austin, 1915 – 1959 Organized in 1915, the group’s mission was to promote congeniality among members and to recognize the worthiness and dignity of any and all legitimate occupations and professions, and the responsibilities of women as economic and social factors. The collection consists of four scrapbooks spanning the years 1915-1966, one 1940 photograph album and a compiled history of the organization from 1915 to 1950. AR.1991.081 Arthlia Cook “Cookie” Smith Papers, 1973 – 1989 Smith was founder of the Austin chapter of the Gray Panthers, president of the Texas League of Women Voters of Texas, a model and an actress. Collection includes photographs, posters, printed materials, and correspondence related to her activities.

AR.1991.083 Flora Thomas Papers, 1886 – 1908 Includes diplomas for Flora Thomas from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as materials related to her teaching career.

AR.1991.091 American Association of University Women—Austin Branch Records, 1923-2011 Organizational records for the A.A.U.W – Austin Branch. Its mission is the advancement of women and girls regardless of educational or economic background. In 1925, AAUW member Grace Delano Clark persuaded the organization to take on the project of establishing Austin’s first public library. Includes organizational history, correspondence, financial documents, photos, clippings, printed material, newsletters, membership lists, scrapbooks and yearbooks.

AR.1991.104 Daughters of the Republic of Texas – William B. Travis Chapter Records, 1882 – 1995 Includes yearbooks and a roster.

AR.1992.001 Violet Crown Garden Club Records, 1924-2008 The Violet Crown Garden Club was founded in 1924 to serve as a platform for the women of Austin to share information on gardening and flower arranging. The main goals of the VCGC are civic beautification, conservation, and education. Correspondence, financial documents, scrapbooks, and photographs created and maintained by the Violet Crown Garden Club from 1924 to 2008 highlight the club’s activities. AR.1992.011 Susan Toomey Frost Papers, 1985 – 1992 Correspondence, printed materials, machine readable materials, financial documents, legal materials, and photographs document Frost’s extensive political and environmental activism. The papers document her interest in urban development, public parkland, and city council races.

AR.1992.019 Austin Networker Newspaper Records, 1979 – 1987 Correspondence, financial documents, reports, periodicals, and printed materials document The Networker, a newspaper established by the Austin Commission on the Status of Women to promote women and women’s issues.

AR.1992.036 Emmett Shelton Johnson Family Papers, 1853-1992 Collection includes information pertaining to the establishment of the Johnson Institute/Camp Friday Mountain and the infamous Lizzie Johnson, “Cattle Queen of Texas”. AR.1993.004 Austin Woman's Federation Yearbooks, 1942-1987 Administrative records, clippings, yearbooks, and membership lists document this group’s activities.

AR.1993.007 Hyde Park Reading Club, 1908 – 1990s Includes yearbooks (1910 – 1990s), minutes (1908 – 1985), correspondence, clippings, and scrapbooks (1908 – 1988).

AR.1993.014 Daughters of the American Revolution – Andrew Carruthers Chapter Scrapbook, 1960 – 1989 Clippings, correspondence, photos, and printed materials document the chapter’s activities.

AR.1993.018 Thelma Jones Faubion Diaries, 1964 – 1982 Contains 17 diaries that document daily life and family events related to Jones, a teacher and store owner.

AR.1993.020 Austin Kwill Klub Scrapbooks, 1923 – 1991 Scrapbooks contain yearbooks, clippings, correspondence, and photographs that document the activities of the Kwill Klub, which was established to encourage fellowship among female writers in Austin.

AR.1993.022 Bergstrom Officer’s Wives Club Scrapbooks, 1950-1989

AR.1994.006 Dot Thornton Papers, 1859-1976 Dot (Mary Fitzhugh) Thornton was a long time Austin, Texas resident and school teacher who died in 1971. The photographs, travel journals, correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and photo album document her personal and professional life as well as provide genealogical information about the Fitzhugh and Thornton families. She is most well known for being a founding member of the Austin Free Kindergarten Association (the official name of the organization was Free Kindergarten Association of Austin, Texas). AR.1994.023 Open Forum Club Records, 1922 – 2006 Formed in 1922 by locally prominent women, the club met monthly to hear talks given by members on subjects related to science, literature, and the arts. Minutes, yearbooks, correspondence, and scrapbook materials document the club’s activities. A guide to the collection is available on Texas Archival Resources Online.

AR.1994.036 United Daughters of the Confederacy—Katie Cabell Muse Chapter #2166, 1963 – 1983 Includes clippings, photos, and printed material.

AR.1994.038 Austin Woman’s Parliament Records, 1927 – 1997 Includes scrapbooks and record books with minutes, membership rosters, photographs, and newspaper clippings; documents the history and activities of the club.

AR.1994.045 Katherine Cook Scrapbooks and Photographs, 1914 – 1974 Includes clippings, printed material, and photographs; documents Cook’s educational career and the successful bid to name an elementary school after her.

AR.1994.049 Austin Credit Women International Scrapbook, 1940 –1952 Includes clippings and photographs.

AR.1994.054 Lilia Mary Casis Papers, 1894 Casis was the first woman to be a full professor at the University of Texas. This collection contains a copy of The Merchant of Venice with handwritten notes.

AR.1994.093 Austin Area League of Women Voters Records, 1919 – 1998 Correspondence, memos, minutes, printed material, and notebooks document the history of the LWV, a political advocacy organization with roots in the women's suffrage movement of the early part of the twentieth century. The League advocated for voter rights, efficient and transparent government, and issues of public welfare. The collection includes bylaws and a constitution from 1919, a list of members from 1921, and early correspondence of founder and suffragist, Jane McCallum, establishing the organization. AR.1994.094 Faces of Austin Video Collection, 1980-1985 This collection contains raw footage of oral history interviews conducted with six well known public figures including Emma Long and Ada Simond. AR.1999.013 J. B. Carlson Collection of Advanced Photojournalism Student Projects, 1979 – 1989 J.B. Colson established the Photojournalism program at the University of Texas at Austin. The collection consists of more than 880 photographs (the bulk of which are black and white), contact sheets, negatives and essays produced by students taking the Advanced Photojournalism course taught by Colson from 1979-1989; includes documentation of Las Manitas Restaurant, an iconic Austin restaurant once located on Congress Ave. started by Cynthia Perez and her sister, Lidia, in 1981. AR.2000.004 Grey Panthers, 1977-2000 Unprocessed collection. This collection constitutes the Austin chapter of the national association founded by Maggie Kuhn in 1970, who began advocating for nursing home reform and fighting ageism after being forced to retire from her job at 65. Kuhn claimed that "old people and women constitute America's biggest untapped and undervalued human energy source." Austin’s chapter was headed up for many years by social activist and former nurse, Charlotte Flynn.

AR.2000.008 Austin Woman’s Club Records, 1928 – 1995 The Austin Woman's Club was founded on April 25, 1928 in Austin, Texas, for "the support of an educational undertaking, the study of literary, civic, patriotic, artistic and other cultural subjects," and to provide a place for women to gather, learn, and network. Minutes, ledgers, printed materials, correspondence, photographs, clippings, financial records, and reports document the activities of this social and philanthropic club. AR.2000.015 Sarah Sitton Papers, 1862-1994 The collection consists of research materials that Sarah Sitton, author and professor of psychology at St. Edwards University, gathered for her book Life at the Texas State Lunatic Asylum, 1857-1997. Included are copies of original documents such as executive staff meeting minutes, correspondence, patient records, government reports, and other assorted administrative records as well as audio cassettes that contain the interviews Sitton conducted with

AR.2000.023 Janna Zumbrun Papers, 1974 – 1988 Prominent gay/lesbian and women’s issues activist in Austin. Papers highlight work with the Citizens for a United Austin, the Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus, the City of Austin Human Relations Commission, and the Austin Lesbian Feminist Organization during the 1970s and 1980s. AR.2001.004 Shudde Fath Papers, 1960-2013 Shudde Fath, a native Austinite, was involved in multiple environmental organizations spanning several decades, including River City Coordinating Council (RCCC) and Save Barton Creek Association (SBCA). The collection consists of her personal papers, newspaper clippings, financial records, and other documents relating to environmental and political issues in Austin, Texas and the surrounding area. Following her retirement from the Texas Employment Commission in 1981, a year after winning a major settlement in a sex-discrimination lawsuit against the commission, she helped found RATERS (Reform Austin’s Terrible Electric Rate Structure). AR.2001.005 Jenny Clark was an independent video producer for Austin's Public Access Television channels (ACTV) focusing on environmental issues. AR.2004.037 Black Citizen’s Task Force Records, 1979-2004 Founded by Dorothy Turner and Velma Roberts, the Task Force was established to inform and inspire African- American citizens to take action against racism. Turner joined the organization in 1974 and became its president in 1979. The recipient of various awards, Turner was an outspoken proponent of civil rights for the underprivileged, minorities and women. AR.2006.014 Claudia Nabors Notebooks and Diaries, 1948 – 1992 Nabors’ prose provide insight into what military life was like for veteran women serving during WWII and what “rural” life was like in south Austin (Slaughter Lane and South Congress Ave) during the 1950s-60s. Sometime during the late 1960s, she befriended Raja Rao (1908-2006), noted Indian novelist and professor of philosophy at UT Austin. AR.2009.044 The Book Trailers Club Scrapbook, 1921 – 1971 The Book Trailers Club was started in 1921 by Mrs. Hesper Mikesell’s Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church. The original name of the group, Christian Home Makers, was changed to The Book Trailers in 1928. The purpose of the club is "to promote broader culture and mutual improvement through the study of various types of literature". The club joined The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs (TFWC) in 1928 and later joined the Austin Woman’s Clubs. AR.2011.007 Austin (Tex.) City Council, Emma Long Records, 1930-2009 Long was elected Austin's first City Councilwoman in 1948. She campaigned for City Council eleven times and was elected nine times for a total of 16 years of service. From the beginning of her service, she was a voice for all citizens of Austin at a time when city politics was run by powerful business interests. She worked for civil rights, fair housing, founded the Human Relations Commission in 1963, worked for desegregation of public parks and other city and public facilities including libraries and golf courses, street paving, dog leash laws, caps on utility rates, and public transportation reform. The collection contains records of Long's tenure on the city council and her political activities and campaigns. She was the first Quaker and the first foreign-born naturalized citizen to serve on the Austin City Council. She served under Mayor Jeff Friedman from 1975 to 1977.

Biography clippings files and photographs may be found using the APL online library catalog—enter the name, along with the term “biography file” to narrow the search. If you are unable to find a particular woman, it may be helpful to look under her father’s, husband’s or family’s name, since many older files were grouped in this way.
