The Release of NSS WISH Annual Report of the year 2012-13 and Honouring of NSS Volunteers who have attended the Adventure Camp in Arunachal Pradesh was held on 11th July 2013 am at A/C Auditorium, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli.

The Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Founder Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena inaugurated the programme by lighting the ‘Kuthuvilaku’. Dr. L. Ganesan, NSS Coordinator (i/c) & Organising Secretary of WISH welcomed the gathering. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ (Retd.) briefly explained about WISH. Mrs. G.K. Krishnaveni, Advisory Committee Member of WISH expressed the experience of the field visit during the awareness programmes held at gross root level.

Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Founder Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena while releasing the NSS WISH Annual Report said that WISH had started off in fine style in conveying the message of Health and Sanitation through the NSS Volunteers in eight districts (Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur) under Bharathidasan University jurisdiction. Over 12,000 NSS Volunteers through their special camps had covered about 200 villages and conveyed the message to the villagers.

The mission of WISH is to propagate intensively good Menstrual Hygiene Management and Sanitation practices to students in all the colleges in the University and also to selected areas in other universities in the state. Already enquiries are coming about the good work done by WISH through NSS Volunteers from other states also.

Considering the importance of safe disposal of Sanitary Napkins under the Public Private Partnership programme with financial support to the tune of 55 lakhs from Maharatna Public Sector Company, BHEL of Trichy, under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Scheme. Already 25 institutions have been provided Electrical Incinerators in the first phase and 125 more institutions will be covered shortly.

She felicitated and distributed the certificates to the 27 NSS Volunteers and 2 Programme Officers who attended the Adventure Camp held at Roing in Arunachal Pradesh. She also appreciated the service rendered by the Programme Officers during their three year tenure. Dr. T. Ramani Devi, Vice President of TRIOGS while receiving the first copy of the report said Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) was high in India, 75 per lakh, which are preventable. Ignorance of good healthy food habits and personal and Menstrual Hygiene Management were the main reasons for this high rate of MMR. WISH could play a key role in popularising the message of Nutritious food and MHM and thereby reduce the rate of MMR.

Dr. M.S. Ashraf, Member of Tamil Nadu Medical Council, Trichy pointed out that a large number of college students especially girls were suffering from Anaemia. More balanced diet and intake of cereals and pulses can cure this menace. Mrs. Jembaga Ramakrishnan, Coordinator, All Ladies Clubs of Trichy offered felicitations. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ (Retd.) proposed the Vote of Thanks. NSS Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers from various colleges and schools of Trichy District were participated in the Programme.

15. Sakthi Kailash College for Women, Salem The awareness of health, hygiene and MHM practices had to be spread among college

students and through them to the rural people said Mrs. Kavitha, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce and Coordinator, Women Empowerment Programme, Sakthi Kailash College for women on 3rd January 2014, at the conclusion of the training programme conducted by Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator WISH, Bharathidasan University. About 300 students selected from UG classes attended the programme. It was surprising that as many as 160 young married women were pursuing their UG & PG studies in the college. During the interaction with the students, they said that the village from where they were hailing, though, is very backward there was awareness about the need for Education for women. This had given them an opportunity to know more about the things happening around them in addition to the knowledge they had gained. Most of them had heard of the functioning of the Self Help Groups in their home villages.

However not much was taught to them on basic amenities of life and the importance of good balanced diet. A large section of the students of the session were healthy enough to donate blood under the blood donation programmes, since they were hailing from rural areas and had plenty of exercise and a clean environment. (It was not true of students in well developed towns studying in colleges). The students though had known and possessed mobile phones were not aware of the need for sanitation. The students wanted a separate session on MHM since most of them were not aware of good MHM practices.

The Principal of the College said that they would get in touch with Bharathidasan University for conduct of WISH programmes in their college.
