Worthington retaliated by punching Li in the face, NYPD lieutenant John Grimpel said. ‘‘The photographer had lacerations to his nose and bruising to his forehead,’’ Lt Grimpel said. The altercation happened on a Greenwich Village street corner about 5.30pm on Sun- day US time (yesterday NT time) when Li was taking photos of the Aussie couple. ‘‘Li was blocking her path and taking pictures of her,’’ Lt Grimpel said. ‘‘He then, for some reason, kicks her in the shin. ‘‘He is then punched by Worthington and they are both taken into custody.’’ Asked if the NYPD believed Li kicked Bingle accident- ally, Lt Grimpel replied: ‘‘I wouldn’t think so. No’’. Perth-raised Worthington, 37, star of the biggest box of- fice film in history, Avatar, was charged with assault and released from custody soon after his arrest. He is sched- uled to appear in a Manhat- tan court midweek. Li was charged with as- sault, reckless endangerment and harassment and will face a judge before his release. In November 2012 Worth- ington was accused of shov- ing a bouncer and charged with disorderly conduct. The charges were later thrown out after the bouncer failed to turn up at court. Bingle made headlines last month when she announced she was ‘‘quitting Australia’’. Happier and healthier Denyers deny drugs reports Grant Denyer SYDNEY: TV personality Grant Denyer has denied re- ports he and his wife have a drug addiction. In a statement yesterday, Denyer said he and his wife Chezzi were saddened by the reports in this week’s Woman’s Day magazine and were consider- ing legal action. The statement said the couple had been under stress in recent months because Denyer had been battling chronic fatigue and exhaus- tion caused by an unknown stomach illness. Chezzi was also suffering PTSD and anxiety resulting from Denyer’s illness. They’d spent four weeks in a wellness centre in Thailand to deal with their health concerns. ‘‘With their conditions now under control they are heal- thier and happier than they have ever been,’’ the state- ment said. ‘‘Claims the couple have a drug addiction and that Grant recently lost his Chan- nel 7 contract are both false. ‘‘They are currently tak- ing legal advice on what action can be taken against the magazine.’’ The rehab facility at the centre of the reports, The Cabin Chiang Mai, confirmed the couple had sought treat- ment for a range of physical and mental health issues. Petition continues Charlotte’s war on trolls Charlotte Dawson SYDNEY: An online petition calling for the creation of ‘‘Charlotte’s Law’’ against online bullying has been launched following the death of Charlotte Dawson. The petition, launched at Change.org by Dawson’s friend Em Mastronardi, had received 8000 signatures by yesterday morning. The Charlotte’s Law — Tougher Cyber Bullying Legislation petition calls on the federal and state gov- ernments to take a tougher stance on cyber bullying and for greater ac- countability from social me- dia companies. Mastronardi said the model and TV personality fought hard against cyber bullying and had dreamed of eradicating negativity from social media. She said Daw- son’s death shouldn’t be in vain and the petition was a way of continuing the battle. ‘‘We ask that the Austral- ian Government and the state governments enforce the existing anti-bullying and harassment laws, and take action against those who viol- ate them,’’ Mastronardi said on the website. ‘‘We ask that Social Media companies take a more active role in the prevention of cyber bullying. Dawson, 47, was outspoken about her depression and in 2012 publicly waged war on so-called Twitter trolls.
