Remember these things are all necessary and there are varying hierarchical needs depending on the situation you are in.The key is to have prepared for fulfilling all of these needs.
Stages of Severity1. Mild - Major inflation, goods and services still available but expensive. medium unemployment and crime. Martial law unlikely2. Moderate - Extreme inflation, goods and services unavailable or prohibitively expensive, commerce stagnant. Much of the population unemployed, very high crime rate. Medium chance of martial law.3. Extreme - Money worthless, trade by barter only, Society collapsing, roving gangs of looters, martial law imminent as government tries to maintain order.
Stage 1In stage 1 I would shelter in place, buy what you can and live off reserves. You are much safer home than anywhere else. Gold and silver are a great investment here and should be sold to invest in property before property values catch up to inflation. People should ban together to try to get through these tough times. Family and community are very important.
Stage 2Stage 2 is a bit iffy. Depending where you live, it may be time to move out but in general one can still hunker down and make a go at it. Don't go anywhere unarmed however. Wild food foraging is useful as a cost saver and selling gold and silver for goods and services is a matter of survival, no longer just an investment.
Stage 3
Stage 3 - Sheltering in place is not an option. Time to head to the hills or live in a very well stocked and fortified community. Mobility is key as foreign troops are not far behind. (See the disarmament treaty of 1961). We will very much depend on our security division. Primitive survival skills are very important but the only precious metal now is lead (Bullets). Gasoline, medical supplies, food, water filtration, plastic bags are in high demand. Luxury items such as alcohol, toilet paper, cosmetics, candy, tobacco products etc. shoot way up in value. The ability to make these items is key to rebuilding and thriving in this environment.
