Cass City FFAers make good onpromise to “meat the need” here

CASS CITY FFA students Pearl Daskam (center)

and Addy Battel (far right) helped unload about

400 pounds of processed chicken Thursday at

Revive Ministries in Cass City, represented above

by Gail Tuckey. The local FFAers are raising live-

stock and donating the processed meat in conjunc-

tion with their “Meating the Need for our Village

Hunger Project”, which will benefit needy families

in the area.

by Tom MontgomeryEditor

Members of the Cass City Junior-Senior High Future Farmers ofAmerica (FFA) know a thing or twoabout raising livestock, and they’reusing that knowledge to help “meat”a very real need in the community.

The Cass City FFA Chapter wasawarded $2,500 earlier this year aspart of the FFA: Food For All pro-gram, which provides grant moneyto local FFA chapters to supportyear-long service-learning projectsthat address hunger needs in theircommunities.

The Cass City FFA is fightinghunger by raising pigs and chickens, then donating the processed meat toarea low-income families who visitthe Revive Ministries food pantry inCass City. The effort has beendubbed the “Meating the Need forOur Village Hunger Project”.

Since first announcing the effortseveral weeks ago, FFA members, under the guidance of family mem-bers and Cass City Junior-SeniorHigh School agriscience teacherRuss Weyer, have proved they’remore than up to the task at hand.

Students Addy Battel, daughter ofSue and Bob Battel, and PearlDaskam, daughter of Tami Daskam, for example, spent the past eightweeks raising 80 broiler chickens –25 at the Battel place and 55 at theDaskam’s – and they filled the freez-ers at Revive with roughly 400pounds of meet Thursday.

“The chickens will be distributedSaturday, July 18, along with roast-ing pans to cook the chickens in,bought with money donated by indi-viduals in the community, and ther-mometers donated by the MichiganPort Producers Association,” Addy

Battel said.In addition, Battel added, “Pearl,

Shane Auten (son of Debra and PaulAuten), Ethan Healy (son of Cathyand Jeff Healy) and I created a videowith advice from local MichiganState University Extension food andnutrition professionals LaurieMessing and Kris Swartzendruberabout meat safety and proper han-dling to show during the distribution.

“The next donation of meat will betwo pigs I am raising at my farm andtwo donated by Keith Czekai beingfinished out at the (Cass City Junior-Senior High School FFA) barn. Thisshould provide approximately 600pounds of meat and will be distrib-uted Saturday, Aug. 15,” she said.“We’ll be raising another batch ofchickens starting this October anddistributing in November.”While adults involved in the project

were instrumental in writing thegrant for the project, it’s the studentswho are putting in the effort neces-sary to turn their goal of helping oth-ers in the community into reality, according to Sue Battel.

“We talked with the kids (early on)about the fact that people right herein Cass City struggle with food inse-curity, that it gets even more difficultfor low-income families to get foodwith Erla’s closed, and the fact thatone of the greatest needs is healthyprotein,” she said. “Rather than rein-vent the wheel, they talked withBrooke Mallory from ReviveMinistries, which already does agood job reaching out to Cass Cityfamilies in need.

“Mr. Weyer talked with the schoolfood service director about just howmany kids in the school are eligiblefor free and reduced lunch, whichindicates the food insecurity problemin the whole community,” Sue Battel

added.Parents of FFA members got

involved. “We met together with ourkids (last) November to talk aboutwhat they could do about hunger ifthey were to get the grant. The kidswere enthusiastic and had goodideas,” Battel recalled.

“I think I can speak for all of ourfamilies when I say that our heartsare bigger than our wallets; we giveto charity as we can, but we wish wecould do more,” she said. “We hitupon the idea that our kids do a greatjob raising meat animals already, andthat our families are glad to providebarn space, transportation and super-vision for them to raise more live-stock and poultry specifically todonate to the Revive food pantry.

“The kids indicated they were gladto do the extra work — somethingabout working alongside friendsmaking it much more fun – (and) Mr.Weyer is glad to provide guidance. In addition to being the FFA advisorand agriscience teacher, he was anFFA member himself as a kid and afarm boy who knows just abouteverything about raising hogs,”Battel continued. In addition to the Meating the Need

For Our Village Hunger Project, local FFA members will also bereaching out to younger kids at theTuscola County Farm Bureau ProjectRural Education Days this fall byteaching them about nutrition.

Area residents interested in donat-ing towards the project can makechecks out to the Cass City FFAChapter, with “Hunger project” writ-ten on the memo line. They can bemailed to Cass City Junior-SeniorHigh School, attn. Russell Weyer,4868 Seeger St. Cass City, MI48726.

“The campers made duct tape boatsusing cardboard boxes and duct tape.Later that evening, the camperswatched and cheered as selected teencounselors had to test out the ducttape boats in Lake Huron to seewhich duct tape boat/counselorwould or would not sink first,” sheadded. “Campers also had a blasttaking apart electronics as part oftheir 4-H camp activities.”

(And anyone else he canget to help)

The Tuscola County Fair is marking its134th birthday this year, and we’d like toencourage everyone to get out and spend atleast a few hours at the fairgrounds in Caronext week.

County fairs are special, and not justbecause they bring back fond childhoodmemories of Ferris wheels, funnel cakes, pieeating contests and grand champion marketsteer ribbons.

The fair also offers visitors an accuratesnapshot of the surrounding communities —our citizens’ talents, work ethic and goodold-fashioned values, as well as our ability totake that much-needed break now and thenand simply have a good time with our friendsand neighbors.

As a rural, agricultural region, we haveplenty to offer visitors with special eventsand exhibits, some boasting the top produce, prettiest flowers and hardiest livestock; oth-ers showcasing residents’ talents, from vari-ous artistic mediums to quilts.

Few other fairs can top Tuscola County inparticipation among 4-Hers — young peopleof all ages and interests — whose hard workand dedication will leave you feeling prettygood about the younger generation.

You can also witness first-hand how countybusinesses support our youth by spendingthousands of dollars purchasing the animalsthese kids have raised and worked with forthe past several months, learning lessons thatwill last them a lifetime.

And talk about entertainment. From con-temporary Christian music and an ice creamsocial to unique motorsports, truck and trac-tor pulls and professional rodeo action, thefair offers something for just about everyone.

One word of caution: don’t look for a JennyCraig booth at the fair. Instead, you’ll betreated to the mouthwatering smell of roastedhot dogs and hamburgers, barbeque, cottoncandy, popcorn, and just about anything thatcan be deep-fried.

For some, the menu alone is reason enoughto visit the fair. But the week is about somuch more than food.

So why not take a trip back in time and pen-cil in some county fair time on your calen-dar? The fair kicks off Sunday and continuesthrough the following Saturday, and 11 bucksstill gets you in and covers your parking andgrandstand events.

Just be sure to leave your cares — and yourdiet — behind!

“No.”I was a little surprised. “How do you feel then?”He sniffled before giving the obvious answer, “Sniffly.”I suppressed a smile. He was only being honest. I could-

n’t ask for anything more than that. Honesty is anothertrait of enlightened men.

But he wasn’t finished. “And a little mad,” he added.“Why mad?” I asked.“Because he hit me first.”I could see how that might make him mad. I reached for

the Kleenex and handed him a tissue. “Here, this can helpget your sniffles out.”

Five minutes later the three boys and I were assembledin the kitchen, making a pledge not to hurt anyone in thefamily. It was a solemn moment. They were all very seri-ous about not hurting each other.

Crisis settled, I filled my coffee cup and returned to themore mundane task of the laundry. I was matching sockswhen I heard a moderate-level crash and muffled soundsfrom downstairs.

They were fighting again. I could hear them down-stairs. There was a moderate-level crash and then muf-fled sounds, like maybe somebody got pushed orbumped up against a piece of furniture. It grew quiet, soI knew someone was injured. Not bad enough for theER or anything, but maybe a stubbed toe or bruisedelbow. No one was yelling, so it was fair to assumethere wasn’t any blood and nothing was broken. At leastnot anything major like a chair or plate.

I was up in the laundry room, doing what I do there. As I listened to the din down in the kitchen, I did whatany experienced mom would do: fold clothes. I knewone of them would be up soon to fetch me. And I wait-ed, with a sense of calm, knowing confidence and per-haps just a hint of a smile.

It used to be that I would have rushed to the scene tobe a hands-on, involved parent. I don’t rush anymore. Idon’t know why. Maybe I’ve become lazy. Maybe Igave birth to one too many boys. Maybe I’ve discov-ered that the laundry isn’t going to fold itself. Whateverthe reason, as long as I don’t hear what we moms knowas the “emergency scream,” I fold until I’m summoned.Either that, or until my coffee needs a refill.

Thirty seconds later, the 12-year-old appeared in thedoorway. The 5-year-old had kicked the 10-year-old inthe stomach.I tried to picture this in my head. I wondered if he was

wearing shoes. That must’ve been a pretty high kick, Ithought. But who am I to question? Blame first andinterrogate later, I always say.

The youngest was in his room, sniffling and a littleteary.

“Did you kick your brother?” I asked. He nodded, looking as forlorn and sad as a 5-year-old

can look.I knew it was probably an act, but I had to give him

points for cuteness. They can still get me with theircuteness. I have to work on that.

“You can’t kick your brother,” I said. “Correct?”“Correct,” he agreed, staring at his hands.Guilt proven, it was time to move on to feelings. You

are supposed to feel sad when you hurt someone. Eventhough he was looking the part, I wanted to make surehe understood it. I am trying to raise enlightened menwho are in touch with their feelings. Their wives willthank me someday.

“How do you feel about hurting your brother?” Iasked.

He shrugged, “Don’t know.”“Do you feel… sad?” I suggested quietly.

I’d bet Mike deBeaubien has a new respect for fire-works.

An employee of deBeaubien Lawn Service, Mike wasmowing behind the high school following the July 4thcelebration when he hit a hidden live firework shell thatexploded under his commercial strength mower anddestroyed the ¾” metal deck.

That prompted his boss – and dad – to search the areaaround the high school soccer field for any other surpris-es. And, to Blaine deBeaubien’s dismay, another livemortar was discovered, this one appearing about 8” indiameter with a fuse attached.A quick call to the Cass City Police Department quickly

defused (no pun intended) the situation.

Cass City senior Mason Erla, a Michigan StateUniversity recruit, has collected about every baseballhonor possible following his junior season. TheAdvertiser and Saginaw News Dream Team member and2-time all-state performer has now caught the attention ofseveral professional teams over the course of the summer.

Among the pro teams that have expressed an interest inthe kid with a powerful arm – not to mention his bat – arethe Tigers, Reds, Rockies, Rangers, Cubs and Blue Jays. Both Toronto and Detroit had Erla on the Stryker gun at91mph earlier this summer during a 97 pitch outing inAnn Arbor, which included 7 strike outs, zero walks, and2 hits.

Oh, by the way, Erla had one of his team’s RBIs in the2-0 victory.

If you’re about my sister Lynn’s age (we’ll leave it at 60something) and attended Cass City High School, youmost likely remember teacher Jim Wynes. He was in town recently to visit Bob Stickle and stopped

by the Chronicle office to ask how my oldest sister wasdoing?

Now retired, Wynes and his wife Mary Ellen live in Mt.Pleasant. Both former Cass City teachers appear to beenjoying their golden years and certainly appear to be fitand trim.

If you can remember the Wynes and would like to dropthem a note, call me at the Chronicle and I’ll pass alongtheir address.

With July tending to be the month with the highest ener-gy consumption and summer being the season that mostAmericans relocate to start a new family or career, theweb site WalletHub compared the average monthly ener-gy bills in each of the 50 U.S. states and the District ofColumbia to help with any decisions concerning a newlocation. The personnel finance website used eight keymetrics to examine the consumption rates and prices offour different energy types: electricity, natural gas, motorfuel and home heating oil.

Their findings: The District of Columbus was the leastexpensive energy state, while Connecticut was the mostexpensive energy state. Michigan, meanwhile, ranked 27.And did you know, the average monthly consumption of

electricity per total housing units in Louisiana is triplethat in Hawaii, or that the average retail price of electric-ity in Hawaii is four times higher than in Washington?

Do you know that the average residential prices of nat-ural gas in Hawaii are seven times higher than in NorthDakota, or that the average monthly motor-fuel consump-tion per driver in Wyoming is three times higher than inthe District of Columbia, or that in Northeastern states, between 10 percent and 66 percent of householdsuse heating oil for heating, compared with less than 3 per-cent of households in the rest of the U.S?

Well now you do!

Caro educator brings homestate “Liberty Bell Award”Tuscola County’s local 2015 Liberty Bell Award recip-

ient, Matthew Branding of Caro, was recently named thestate winner of the coveted award by the State Bar ofMichigan Board of Commissioners.

Branding will be presented the award during the annu-al State Bar of Michigan Awards Banquet Oct. 7 at theSuburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

“We could not possibly be more excited that our localwinner has gone on to be recognized at the state level,”commented George Holmes, chairman of the TuscolaCounty Bar Association’s Liberty Bell AwardCommittee. “It really makes us feel particularly goodabout our investment in this program.”

The Liberty Bell Award program is organized by theState Bar of Michigan and recognizes “outstanding serv-ice performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given ofhis or her time and energy to strengthen the effective-ness of the American system of freedom under law, inkeeping with the spirit of our Constitution.”Local bar associations around the state submit nomina-

tions for the honor, with the local winners then nominat-ed for consideration for the state award.

For the second year in a row, Tuscola County’s localwinner has gone on to win the statewide award. Lastyear, Gary Lasceski of Vassar brought home the honor.

Branding earned this year’s award through years ofhard work, teaching civics and government at Caro HighSchool. In his spare time, he has been extremely activein mentoring his students’ participation in the YMCA’sYouth in Government program. Branding has alsoplayed a significant role in organizing the Law DayLecture Series that Caro High School has hosted over thelast several years.“It is simply amazing that work that is being done right

here in Tuscola County has been recognized like this twoyears in a row,” said Adam Pavlik, president of theTuscola County Bar Association.

“Mr. Branding is not just teaching children, he’s devel-oping true citizens,” Pavlik added. “Our future is ingood hands.”

Kindness expressed by the Human DevelopmentCommission’s (HDC) Retired and Senior VolunteerProgram (RSVP) volunteers is helping Thumb area sen-iors stay in their homes longer. The national trend of “aging in place” is relevant in the

Thumb area as local seniors are choosing to remain intheir homes longer, and they are seeking services asalternatives to long-term care facilities, according toWendy Jacot, human resources/marketing manager forHDC.“One problem facing seniors who wish to ‘age in place’

is social isolation,” Jacot said. “When seniors lose theirpartner, friends, and often the ability to drive, they maydevelop feelings of loneliness or depression. RSVP hasa unique initiative to support seniors who wish to stay inthe comfort of their home called Safe Seniors.”

The Safe Seniors program reduces the social isolationfelt by many as they grow older, and RSVP is currentlyseeking compassionate volunteers at least 55 years ofage to participate in the initiative. Volunteers who enrollin RSVP will be able to set their own schedule and maychoose from two Safe Seniors options: KeepingIndependent Seniors Safe (KISS) or Silver Companions.

“KISS provides telephone reassurance through sched-uled phone conversations between a KISS volunteer andan isolated senior,” Jacot explained. “KISS volunteers

perform their assignments from the comfort of their ownhome while reaching out to seniors who may not haveanyone to talk to all day.

“The contact schedule is determined by the needs ofseniors and the availability of volunteers. Generally, phone calls occur three-to-five times a week and lastabout fifteen minutes,” she added. “The phone call willbrighten the day of an isolated or homebound seniorwhile giving their families/caretakers a feeling of peace, knowing someone has checked in with the senior.”

Silver Companion volunteers, meanwhile, visit isolat-ed or homebound seniors in their homes.

“The volunteer and senior may play cards, read, go forwalks, or other meaningful activities. Generally, visitsoccur one to two days a week with an average visit last-ing about an hour. The companionship increases socialties for the senior and may prevent loneliness or depres-sion,” Jacot said.

Joining RSVP means joining over 500,000 volunteersage 55 or more who are making a meaningful differencein local communities. Senior volunteers give years ofknowledge, skills, and talents to support local communi-ty efforts, including HDC’s Safe Seniors initiative.

New research has revealed that people in America’s Midwest are theleast patient in the country when it comes to waiting on hold duringcalls to businesses.

The study of 2,234 consumers revealed that just 53 percent ofrespondents in the Midwest are prepared to wait on hold longer thanone minute, putting them level with those in the South as the mostimpatient in America. Consumers in the Northeast received the titleas most patient in the country (57 percent).

I guess I could buy that, but I’m not convinced patience is a region-al virtue.

I mean, this study also notes that Millennials (the whipper snappersborn between 1975 and 1995) are among the least patient.

Well, stop the presses. What have Millennials ever had to wait for? It’s no wonder young people have even less patience than those of

us born a couple (or many) years earlier – they’re spoiled, not to puttoo fine a point on it. I mean, start with instant information — this isa generation that was born at a time when most homes already had acomputer (excluding third world countries), and could do more withthat computer by the time they finished kindergarten than some of uscan yet today.

And they know how to use the technology, to be sure. When wasthe last time you went out and didn’t see a dozen or more of themwith their eyes glued to a cell phone, iPad or whatever, checkingemail, Facebook, Twitter or some other social networking site? Andit doesn’t really matter what else they’re doing at the time (i.e. cross-ing a busy street, driving, etc.).

That sort of demand for instant gratification would leave most ofthem horrified at the thought of having to use a telephone that wasphysically connected to anything (like a wall), and if no oneanswered, you simply had to try again. Later.I won’t even go into memories of that golden oldie — the party line. Just try to get one of them to imagine limiting their communication

options (say, with their friends) to making such a phone call or – gasp— actually writing a letter by hand. With a pencil or pen. No cellphone, no instant messaging, no Skyping, no keyboard, no spellcheck, no email and no fax (if you don’t know what that is, young-ster, look it up). Yup, no anything but a piece of paper, an envelopeand a stamp.

Oh, I forget: and no selfies, thank goodness.Yeah, I know, letter writing is ancient, gone the way of the telephone

directory, which I still find quite useful on occasion. Most of this generation also has never known a time when they did-

n’t have 300 or more television channels to choose from (and mostwouldn’t know how to turn on a television without a remote). Whenwe were young, we had to wait until our favorite show or moviescame on (and for some of us, we were looking forward to seeing it inblack and white for a time). There was no recording – if you missedit, you missed it. Today? There’s on-demand TV, Netflix, etc. And there’s no limit to

the resources for their favorite shows, music or whatever – there’salways YouTube, iTunes and countless other resources.Commercials? Forget about it.

The Millennials are probably the most educated generation to-date.Even so, they don’t seem to know much about being patient.

I guess patience just comes easier for Baby Boomers like myself.Well, once that knot head driving in front of me figures out where

he’s going. C’mon, dad, pick a lane!

FAIR HISTORY

The Tuscola County Fair’s roots date back to the early 1880s.The Tuscola County Fair Association, initially known as the Caro District

Agriculture Society, was organized March 11, 1881, 33 years after thenation’s first state fair was held in Detroit. In September 1881, the fair host-ed its first agricultural, industrial and recreational exhibit.

Always a primarily agricultural attraction, the county fair has displayednew farming equipment and methods, animals, produce and handicrafts onits current site.

The Tuscola County Fair pre-dates any of the football “bowl” games aswell as the Indy 500. When the fair started, there was no Panama Canal, noradio, the Wright Brothers had not flown, Ellis Island was not in operation,Geronimo was still on the war path, and 12 states had yet to be admitted tothe Union.Harness racing was a popular sport in a horse-powered society, and the clay

track at the fairgrounds was built in 1892 with 7,000 yards of dirt, mostlysand, and topped with 3,000 yards of clay — all hauled with horses and wag-ons — at a cost of roughly $1,000.The first grandstand was completed in 1894 at a cost of $2,000 and looked

much like the stands of Kentucky’s Churchill Downs, seating 1,500 people. This was followed by a stage, with a cement block basement for dressingrooms. Horse barns, sheep and hog pens were also constructed. In the early1900s, the fair office and two restrooms were built. At about the same time, the building later called Heritage Hall was constructed and basketball gameswere held there until the new Caro High School was built.

The first electricity was provided by the Michigan Sugar Factory’s powerplant. The railroad tracks leading to the plant were also used in the early eraof the fair to bring entertainment acts to the fair. One of those acts wasKatherine Stinson, the fourth licensed female pilot in the United States.Only 21 at the time, she became known as the “Flying Schoolgirl”, flyingexhibitions all over the country. Her plane was brought in by train andassembled in the infield of the track.

Over the years, many other world famous performers appeared at theTuscola County Fair, including Gene Autry, The Cisco Kid, Minnie Pearl,Homer and Jethro, the Duke Ellington Band and the Glenn Miller Band.

Tuscola County Fair next week

Although Bradley and Londonbegan their project through FFA,they are entering their animalsthrough Tuscola County’s 4-H pro-gram. Like many other youthinvolved with 4-H, neither of girlslive on an active farm. Instead, the 4-H program allows kids from allbackgrounds to give aspects of farm-ing a try.

“4-H is about building young lead-ers; they’re looking for leadershipand also for well-rounded citizens,”said Jane Ignash, a local 4-H leader.“It gives them hands-on experienceabout livestock. Instead of going tothe grocery store and buying theirfood and not knowing where itcomes from, it shows them andthey’re part of the cycle.”

Preparing to show their cows gavethese girls an opportunity to experi-ence all the different techniques forgaining the trust of a large animal, and then caring for it.

“My cow is more shy, so it took alot of sitting (and) us getting used toeach other,” explained London.“Usually I start feeding it, get it tocalm down some, make sure it haswater. Then I get the halter on andtake her outside and walk.”

This fits with one of the goals of 4-H, Ignash explained. “It shows themhow to get up in the morning, andyou can’t show up at the fair withoutworking,” she said. “It teaches thema lot of self-motivation. They takecharge of rationing feed. They haveto feed it, water it and prepare it forthe show ring.”

Another county fair participant, eighth grader Kevin McArthur, came

Local youths work hard preparing for fairContinued from page one. to 4-H independently and shows

lambs. This is McArthur’s secondyear showing at the fair.

McArthur’s experience is differentthan London and Bradley’s in that hepurchased his Suffolk lambs himself.McArthur bought his lambs in April, already keeping the judges’ criteriain mind.

“If you’re buying two, you want tomake sure that they look pretty closeto the same,” McArthur explained.“You don’t want one that’s biggerthan another.”

While his daily routine is similar toLondon’s and Bradley’s, McArthur’sexperience in the judging ring lastyear taught him a little more aboutwhat the judges will be looking for.As he works with his animals everyday, he practices preparing his sheepfor the judges’ inspection.

“You put the halter on, walk themaround for a little bit. You lead themby the head,” he said. “Then you tryto set the feet up so they’re squareand then you can touch his back. They want to make sure that thesheep isn’t really jumpy whenthey’re touching him.”

For all three participants, the maingoal in showing their cows andsheep is to sell the animals at theconclusion of the fair. Over the pastfew years, McArthur has learned

what potential buyers (and thejudges) are looking for.

For example, when the judges feelthe sheep’s back, “they’re lookingfor the loin part of the back to bereally tough, because that meansyou’ll get good meat out of it, afteryou sell it,” he noted.

From making purchasing decisionsto investing in an animal’s care andhow to sell it, “4-H is about buildingyoung leaders,” Ignash concluded.“They’re looking…people who aregoing to grow up and be strongmembers of the community, whohave ag knowledge, so even if theydidn’t grow up on a farm, they’refamiliar with the farm industry (and),they’re either knowledgeable pro-ducers or knowledgeable con-sumers.”

Those wishing to see these animalsand all the others registered forshowing this year can do so at theTuscola County Fairgrounds in Carothroughout fair week, which getsunderway Sunday and continuesthrough Saturday, July 25.

Area youths will be showing andselling their animals during theannual 4-H and FFA Small LivestockSale and 4-H and FFA LargeLivestock Sale, which are slated tostart at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., respec-tively, Thursday, July 23.

landing, ice cream social, grand parade, and a full afternoon and evening ofmusic featuring the Bill Denbrock Big Band, Eastern Michigan MusicMakers, Paula (Good) Ralph, a community choir, Ray Fibranz, TylerRoemer and the Immanuel Men’s Quartet.

For Brinkman, the highlights included a visit from former Owen-GageSchools band teacher Jeri Blough, who taught in the district from 1974through 1978, and who took part in the community choir Saturday.

Brinkman also cited former Owen-Gage educator Manuel Thies’ remarksprior to the choir performance. Thies taught at Owen-Gage for nearly 30years, then spent another 10 years serving as an administrator, includingschool superintendent. “That was a highlight for a lot of us,” she said.

Brinkman didn’t hesitate to say all of the effort was worth seeing so manypeople crowd along the main drag for the parade, and throughout the villagepark and school grounds afterwards. And she wasn’t alone.“It was worth it. Every bit,” Roemer commented. “She (Brinkman) was

very enthusiastic. She just kept it going, and other people jumped on thebandwagon.”

Several others agreed, judging by comments offered by area residents onBrinkman’s Facebook page, “You Know You’re From Owendale, MIWhen…”

“The parade was great!,” Jodie Fritz said. “It was nice to see the townbustling with people! Good job to the planners! Thank-you for your effortsin bringing the community together!”

“Great parade for a small town!” added Heather Sprague.Organizers had been planning the two-day celebration since February,

according to Brinkman, who noted Owen-Gage Schools secretary SherryFritz along with Don Dorsch and Rose Ann Stewart played key roles inpreparing for the festival.

Although Brinkman doesn’t anticipate repeating the scope of this year’sfestival next summer, she is hoping to see something on a smaller scale –perhaps a Friday evening dedicated to a car cruise and music in the park.

“It won’t be another 30 years” before the next celebration, she said.

Pastor’s Corner

The Cass City MinisterialAssociation appreciated everyonethat supported the historic first everCommunity Worship Experience onSunday July 5th. This event turnedout to be a great addition to helpclose out the annual FreedomFestival, especially for the 150thanniversary celebration.

Revive Ministries was on handearly as setup was in process to offercoffee and fresh baked goods. Wewere blessed with a beautiful dayand N. Seeger Street started to fill upas early as 8:30 a.m.

The worship service started at 10:30a.m. with 9 area churches participat-ing. Powerful praise and worshipstarted out the service with a teamcomprised of singers and musiciansfrom 4 different churches. Two pow-erful drama presentations were alsoincluded in the service by the CassCity Homeschool group and specialmusic was offered by the FulcherFamily during offering. The message was delivered by three

different pastors talking about theimportance of what Jesus did in thepast by dying on the cross for our

Community Worship Experience rewardingsins, how Jesus plays an importantpart in our lives today and then howJesus has gone to prepare a place forour future.

A big highlight of the service wasmost certainly the communion. Wasnice to see so many in the communi-ty coming together under the com-mon bond of Christ to celebrate allthat he has done for us.

The Ministerial Association spon-sored a lunch following the serviceas well as a time of fun includinginflatables and ice cream sandwich-es. By the time the event was in full

swing, there were over 700 people inattendance!

Thank you once again to everyonefor their help and support for thisevent. It took a lot of people workingtogether to make this event a suc-cess, including the local churches, businesses and village officials.

2 Corinthians 3:17 says: “For theLord is the Spirit, and wherever theSpirit of the Lord is, there is free-dom”. True freedom is offeredthrough Jesus Christ and it was trulya blessing to be able to celebrate thatfreedom together as a community.
