Figure 1 illustrates the amount in kilograms of greenhouse gases emitted by one Eco-TakeoutTM versus 360 polystyrene containers. It takes 24polystyrene containers to emit the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as one EC-12-1. However, once the Eco-TakeoutTM is reused atleast 24 times, over a 360-use lifespan, one Eco-TakeoutTM emits significantly less greenhouse gas than 360 single-use, disposable containers.
Figure 2 illustrates the amount in kWh of embodied energy of one Eco-TakeoutTM versus 360 polystyrene containers. It takes 32 polystyrene containers to use the same amount of embodied energy as one EC-12-1. However, once the Eco-TakeoutTM is reused at least 32 times, over a 360-use lifespan, one Eco-TakeoutTM uses significantly less embodied energy than 360 single-use, disposable containers.
Life Cycle Comparison:Reusable Eco-TakeoutsTM versus Disposable To-Go System
This study compares the environmental impact of one reusable to-go container to a single-use, disposable container of a similar size and dimension.The life cycle impact of these two products is compared by quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and embodied energy . These measurementswere chosen because they provide a basic picture of the total environmental impact of these two products.
This study was conducted using the GaBi 4 software program to create life cycle plans for the Eco-TakeoutTM and a standard polystyrene foamcontainer. Although certain information, such as product weight, miles traveled, and energy mix, were adjusted for this study, the GaBi 4 databasesprovide a reliable and well-documented source for comparison.
This study is a cradle-to-grave analysis and analyzes raw material extraction, production, transportation, reuse through dishwashing, and disposalthrough traditional landfill. Other impacts, such as machinery maintenance and packaging, were not included in the analysis. The functional unit forthis study is one Eco-TakeoutTM unit (EC-12-1) measuring 9 x 9 x 2.75 inches. Based on information available from institutions currently usingEco-TakeoutsTM, it is determined that the Eco-TakeoutTM can withstand at least 360 uses. This study compares one Eco-TakeoutTM reused 360 timesand 360 single-use polystyrene to-go containers.
