 The Witchtower 07/2010

“In a family and in a house where it is available and used, this little all-purpose

device surely will obviate the need for a doctor many times.” – Das Goldene Zeitalter

[German edition of The Golden Age], December 1, 1931, page 359

As the Bible clearly foretold, after “the year

1918, when God destroys [“destroyed”, German

edition] the churches wholesale and the church

members by millions,”  Jehovah‟s Witnesses

should experience an unprecedented expan-

sion. (The Finished Mystery, page 485) This did

happen, for “at the Bible Students‟ convention

at Cedar Point, Ohio, U.S.A., September 1-8,

1919, a notable outpouring of Jehovah‟s spirit

activated his people to organize a global cam-

paign of preaching.” (Revelation  –   It’s Grant

Climax at Hand! , page 143).

Which divine mission that all true Chris-

tians are obliged to accomplish was introduced

at this event? The speaker “outlined methods

for a new work of obtaining subscriptions for

The Golden Age.” (1975 Yearbook of Jehovah’s

Witnesses, page 122) The purpose of this heav-

en-sent instrument was “to explain in the light

of Divine wisdom the true meaning of the great

phenomena of the present day and to prove to

thinking minds by evidence incontrovertible

and convincing that the time of a greater bless-

ing of mankind is now at hand.” (The Golden

 Age, January 1, 1919, page 3)

In hindsight Jehovah‟s Witnesses noted:

“Little did the conventioners know what a

courageous journal The Golden Age wouldprove to be.” (Jehovah’s Witnesses  –  Proclaim-

ers of God’s Kingdom, page 77) So, which pre-

cious, life-giving truths were announced in the

Golden Age?

For example, the magazine called the claim

that diseases would be caused by “germs” a

“preposterous idea” and “a leftover superstition

of a past age.” (The Golden Age, March 18, 1931

page 404) After the German edition stated tha

there would be no more excretions in paradis

(February 1, 1924), the English issue of April 2

1930 claimed that likely all women would then

be transferred into men. – page 446.

The Golden Age, October 7, 193

“The Golden Age tormented the clergy with further

stinging articles and cartoons” (Revelation –

It’s Grand Climax at Hand!, page 147)

 The Witchtower 07/2010

The English issue of January 15, 1936 told

its readers to train their elimination, to avoid

remedies and to abstain from fried potatoes,

tea, laziness, hypocrisy, dishonesty and warm

water. Another issue of the German edition

explained the central problem of the time:

“Slow but steady, the human brain starts to

suffer from the weight of the progress of our

knowledge … This superfluity of knowledge

breaks our nervous system, and one of these

days we sit there with incurable insanity.”

 –   Das Goldene Zeitalter, May 1, 1926, page 142.

At least once, the editors proved to be really

visionary. In the October 15, 1919 issue they

announced that “in a very few years, at most,”

there would be “cheap wireless phones … mak-

ing long-distance conversation possible to any

part of the world at nominal cost.” (page 56)Here the Watchtower Society‟s writers showed

for the first time what they understand by “very

few years.”

“Cheap wireless phones” existed “very few years” after 1919

Under the headline “Why is the world not

yet proselyted and whose fault is that?”, the

German edition explained: “Everyone will have

to admit that today the world is further away

from being proselyted than ever. 100 years ago

there were about 500,000,000 heathen on

earth, and now 1,000,000,000 … The vices of

tobacco smoking, liquor drinking … divorce

and scandals … can mainly be found amongthe Christian nations. All thinking people must

recognize that these vices rather in- than de-

crease. Yes, they increase so rapidly that it is

impossible to build enough jails and prisons.”

( Das Goldene Zeitalter, February 1, 1928, page

43) So they wanted more prisons for people

who smoked, drank liquor or divorced.

The postage increase in Germany was a

definitive “sign of the time of the end”

Of course, time and again the magazine fea

tured irrefutable proofs for the fact that Arma

geddon was near. Under the title “Signs of th

time of the end,” the German edition said: “ThReich Ministry of Postal Services is plannin

a postage increase from 10 to 15 pfennigs.” ( Da

Goldene Zeitalter, May 15, 1927, page 160) Lat

er, after Armageddon, the survivors would b

“dynamiting the earth into a paradise.”  –   Th

Golden Age, October 1, 1919, page 15.

No wonder that Jehovah‟s Witnesses de

servedly glanced down at people who refused t

accept such manifest evidence and considere

them “enemies” or “opposers,” worthy of annihilation. –  Children, page 240.

People who refused

to subscribe to the

Golden Age were

insulted as “opposers”

 The Witchtower 07/2010

Sincere people though recognized at once

that the message of the Golden Age was the

truth. William Dingman from Oregon said:

“When I was a teenager, I enjoyed reading it,

and I became convinced that it contained im-

portant Bible truth.” (The Watchtower, Novem-

ber 1, 1997, page 19) But that was in the 1930s,when science had not yet advanced too much.

However, if the information in the Golden Age

was from God, it should be timeless and still

attracting people even decades later.

Exactly that was the case. “In 1953, Robert

… moved into a dilapidated old farmhouse.”

Behind a wall where mice had stowed away

debris, he found an issue of the Golden Age

(which must have been more than 16 years old

because it was published under that name only

until 1937). “He was so impressed by the clear,

Bible-based direction given in the magazine

that he told [his wife] Lila that they were going

to join „the religion of  The Golden Age.‟” (The

Watchtower, July 1, 2000, page 17) Indeed,

“thinking people responded to the message of

The Golden Age.” –  The Watchtower, January 1,

1994, page 21.

How could the editors of the Golden Agehave the ability to write such fascinating, fore-

sighted articles of universal significance? By

their own admission, they did not rely on “hu-

man wisdom, because that has been tried and

failed and such wisdom is foolishness in the

sight of Jehovah.” They rather claimed to

“point the people to the clear and indisputable

evidence in the light of present-day events.”

 –  The Golden Age, October 1, 1919, page 3.

Indeed, most statements of the Golden Age that were based on “clear and indisputable

evidence” have proved wrong in the meantime

and seem preposterous even to current Jeho-

vah‟s Witnesses. Still, the assertion that the

Golden Age  would not be based on “human

wisdom” was correct, since even from a human

point of view it cannot have been “wisdom

which guided the editors. Rather the Golde

Age was based on human idiocy.

However, the question how the Golden Ag

editors were able to make up such absurd arti

cles had been unanswered until shortly. But

thoughtful reader of  Erbrechet!  magazine (th

German companion title of  The Witchtower

now finally found the reason why the writer

were unable to keep a cool head. It is reveale

in the German issue from December 1, 1931

“Another device is the head-sweating appa

ratus. With the same small steam generato

you can ray single sick parts … This apparatu

has also been in use for some time past for th

staff of the Golden Age at our premises.” – pag

359.

So the editors admitted that there wer

“sick parts” in their heads that were regularl

treated with a “head-sweating apparatus.” Thi

device is pictured on the next page (figure 5)

along with other applications of the sam

product.

Unfortunately, the detailed user manual fo

the apparatus did not survive. Likely th

steam generator (labeled with the letter “w” inthe illustration) was filled with water and then

heated by electricity, so that the bonnet on th

user‟s head was filled with water vapor. Mayb

the brain size decreased through the high tem

perature and moisture; it is also possible tha

parts of the brain died off totally.

We don‟t know today from which materia

the steam generator, the tube and the bonne

were made; however it might well be that th

hot steam dissolved harmful substances fromthe apparatus and so caused additional injur

to the brain. As the steam generator was oper

ated with electricity and also allowed for “elec

tric baths,” it is possible that the user of th

head-sweating apparatus got electric shock

occasionally.

It is still unclear though if the steam gen-

erator really was filled with water. The letter

“w” in the illustration could also stand for

“Watchtower”, “water of life” [= Watchtower],

“wine” or “whisky.” After all, the manufacturer

was “a Golden-Age-reader for many years” –

hence it would not be a surprise if he and his

customers would have torn out pages from the

Golden Age or the Watchtower and boiled them

up with water, so that could absorb the “truth”

along with the hot steam. Unfortunately, even

back then the magazines were printed with

toxic ink (as today), so that additional poison-

ing and further mental enfeeblement may have

been the consequences.

Though we can‟t be sure how it happened,

we can be certain that the use of the head-

sweating apparatus harmed the brain. Some-

one with a sound brain would not put a bucket-

like rubber case around his head in order to

inhale hot steam from a metal kettle connected

to the power outlet!

The “small, simple and cheap device” pro-

moted in the Golden Age offered a number of

other applications besides the head-sweating

apparatus. With a different hose it could be

used as ear steam blasting apparatus (fig.

6). Likely the users hoped to route the fumes

directly into the brain and so achieve a greater[dumbing-down] effect. Maybe the use of this

device also injured the ears, so that the meet-

ings were easier to endure afterwards.

Joseph F. Rutherford,

at that time president

of the Watchtower

Society, preferred

to consume wine

and whisky orally

Maybe this device also allowed treating th

brain with power surges. The application of th

ear steam blasting apparatus might have bee

an early form of electroconvulsive therapy

which is used today to treat serious depres

sions  –  an indication that the editors of th

Golden Age (who used these devices) migh

have suffered from depressions or other menta

diseases.

The unit also enabled an electric wate

hip bath (fig. 4). For this purpose, the water i

the rubber bathtub was directly connected with

the power line through a kind of transformer

the short description in the magazine read

“For electric baths, electricity from the powe

outlet is conducted into the water by two ele

ments.”

We don‟t know the specifications of th

transformer (if there was one at all), but “DC

voltage causes … chemical changes in th

body.” (Wikipedia, German edition) Dependin

on transformer specifications and usage dura

tion, the device may have caused “chemica

changes” leading to debility and other diseases

What about the full steam healing appa

ratus (fig. 7)? We don‟t know exactly how i

was used; since it was “not for electric connection,” the steam had to be produced somehow

beforehand. Maybe the steam kettle was con

nected first to fill the rubber mantle with

steam and then removed.

Anyway, according to the illustration ther

were only two small vents for breathing, and

the brain is “an organ uniquely sensitive to

lack of oxygen;” lack of breathing air can “ir

reparably damage” it. ( Awake! , January 8, 1990

page 25) Hence extensive use of the full steamhealing apparatus could further boost th

dumbing-down effect of the head-sweatin

apparatus, the ear steam blasting apparatu

and the electric water hip bath.

Page 8: witchtower_07_2010

7/30/2019 witchtower_07_2010

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/witchtower072010 8/16

 The Witchtower 07/2010

On the face of it, the steam healing appa-

ratus with electric connection  didn‟t seem

to affect the brain. Its application is described

as follows: “A closed, wreathlike rubber mantle

hung around the head, the head free, a small

rubber bathtub with a small wooden seat

standing in it, a small, electrically heated

herbal steam kettle, and within a quarter of an

hour the person sweats. He can exude around½ - ¾ liters of bad juices by perspiration im-

mediately.”

When looking closely at the apparatus and

comparing it to products of other suppliers

(who were no readers of the Golden Age), we

can identify a flaw though. As mentioned

above, the user could exude up to ¾ liters by

perspiration during the application of this

apparatus. This amount of liquid is removed

from the body and would have to be compen-sated by drinking. Moosdorf’s steam sweat-

ing apparatus, presented already 40 years

before, had for this purpose a “dumb waiter …

a glove-like extension of the top part,” so that

the user could, for example, “bring a glass to

his mouth.” – Advertisement in Bilz – Das neue

Naturheilverfahren , 25th edition, 1895.

The low-cost model promoted by the Golden

Age lacked such a feature; the user had no

possibility to drink during the application.Hence dehydration was bound to occur, and

this “leads to a decrease in the brain‟s energy

potential … Subsequently anxieties, worries,

rage and other negative emotions emerge.”

(Zentrum der Gesundheit) So the steam healing

apparatus with electric connection could also

harm the brain, like the head-sweating appa-

ratus, the ear steam blasting apparatus, the

electric water hip bath and the full steam heal-

ing apparatus.

The Golden Age  said about the unit: “In a

family and in a house where it is available and

used, this little all-purpose device surely will

obviate the need for a doctor many times.” ( Das

Goldene Zeitalter, December 1, 1931, page 359)

Was that true? That is likely so. All the nega-

tive effects (water deficiency, anoxia, toxic

fumes, and electricity) likely shortened th

users‟ lives. Since many visits to the doctor ar

required at old age, the need for these wa

„obviated‟ because the potential patient wa

already dead.

It seems that the author of the article prais

ing these hazardous appliances and offering “

special discount” for subscribers of the Golde Age did himself not make an extensive use o

them, or he was impervious to their dumbing

down effect. The magazine names “Pau

Gehrhard” as the writer, but Paul Balzereit, a

that time managing editor of the Golden Age i

Germany, “published in the magazine Th

Golden Age under the pseudonym of Pau

Ge[h]rhard.” (1974 Yearbook of Jehovah’s Wit

nesses, page 107) Later in the concentration

camp, he “signed the declaration abdicatin

association with the brothers,” finally he evebecame “a violent opposer” of Jehovah‟s Wit

nesses. (1974 Yearbook of Jehovah’s Witnesses

pages 149, 150) Later he collaborated with th

Ministry of State Security to weaken Jehovah

Witnesses in the German Democratic Republic

If you want to avoid becoming an apostate

you should make extensive use of the head

sweating apparatus. Though the device is n

more available from the original supplier, you

can easily build a comparable apparatus byourself.

 The Witchtower 07/2010

“A gross sinner … must be expelled or disfellowshiped from the congregation.”

 – Happiness – How to Find it?, page 174

As is known, Jehovah‟s Witnesses have the

“loving arrangement” of disfellowshipping (The

Watchtower, July 15, 1995, page 25) Since the

laws of the worldly nations forbid them to kill

apostates and other sinners, at least Jehovah‟s

Witnesses isolate such persons completely from

the company of their former brothers and sis-

ters.  –   The Watchtower, November 15, 1952,

page 703.

So far, disfellowshipping has only been ap-

plied to living sinners. But as Jehovah has now

revealed by means of his Holy Spirit, this prac-

tice is contrary to his righteous principles, for

“by no means will he give exemption from pun-

ishment,” not even after death. (Exodus 34:7)

Accordingly, even deceased Jehovah‟s Witness-es must be disfellowshipped if they sinned

against the “present truth” during their lif e-

time. (Jehovah’s Witnesses –  Proclaimers of

God’s Kingdom, page 121). Which deceased

Jehovah‟s Witnesses are affected by this new

provision?

“The first witness of Jehovah” was Abel

(Jehovah’s Witnesses –    Proclaimers of God’s

Kingdom, page 13) Another publication tells usthat Paul mentioned “faithful pre-Christian

witnesses of Jehovah.” (The Watchtower, Octo-

ber 1, 1999, page 19) True, all members of

God‟s universal organization who bear witness

of Jehovah  –  including Jehovah himself  –  are

“Jehovah‟s Witnesses.” – compare John 8:18.

A Jehovah‟s Witness “must accept the en

tire range of … Scriptural beliefs that ar

unique to Jehovah‟s Witnesses.” (The Watch

tower, April 15, 1986, page 31) The book  Pa

Attention to Yourselves and to All the Floc

contains detailed instructions for elders, in

cluding a list of transgressions that requir

disfellowshipping. Pages 92 to 96 of this boo

list, among others, the following issues:

  Manslaughter

  Sexual misconduct

  Apostasy

  Drunkenness

  Stealing, thievery, fraud

  Deliberate, malicious lying

  Reviling, slander

  Obscene speech

  Failure to abstain from blood

Extortion  Refusal to provide materially for one‟s own family

  Nonneutral activities

  Fits of anger, violence

We will examine these sins one by one and

determine which “pre-Christian witnesses of

Jehovah” are guilty of them. (Revelation  –  Its

Grand Climax at Hand! , page 290) We will

start with the sin of apostasy; the other trans-

gressions will be covered in the next issue.

Apostasy

Jehovah‟s Witnesses consider apostasy the

worst of all sins. They “share Jehovah‟s feel-

ings toward such apostates … they „feel a

loathing‟ toward [them].” (The Watchtower,

October 1, 1993, page 19) The manual  Pay

Attention to Yourselves and to All the Flock

makes it plain what “apostasy” means: “Per-

sons who deliberately spread (stubbornly hold

to and speak about) teachings contrary to Bible

truth as taught by Jehovah's Witnesses are

apostates.” – page 94.

So it is apostasy when someone spreads

teachings contrary to those of Jehovah‟s Wit-

nesses. A man who excelled in doing that was

Moses. He even introduced a complete code of

law which was contradicting the Watchtower

doctrines in many respects  –  for example, he

claimed that divorce would be allowed as long

as the man issues a “certificate of divorce” to

his former wife. (Deuteronomy 24:1) He also

asserted that preaching from house to housewould not be required for salvation (Exodus

14:3). He „stubbornly held to and spoke about‟

these teachings, so he surely is guilty of apos-

tasy.

Many centuries later, the apostle James

too spread false teachings when he claimed:

“The form of worship that is clean and unde-

filed from the standpoint of our God and Fa-

ther is this: to look after orphans and widows

in their tribulation, and to keep oneself with-out spot from the world.” (James 1:27) The

most important aspects of worship  –  witness-

ing from house to house, attending meetings,

and obedience toward the “faithful and discreet

slave” –  he did not mention at all! Rather he

encouraged Christians to waste their time

„looking after orphans and widows‟ instead o

participating “in the lifesaving preachin

work.” –   Our Kingdom Ministry, Decembe

2009, page 1.

Enemies

The “Bible truth as taught by Jehovah'

Witnesses” involves the obligation to hatapostates. The August 1, 1953 Watchtowe

issue applied Psalm 139:22 to them: “[ Apos

tates] we hate and count as our enemies …

„I hate them with perfect hatred: they are be

come mine enemies.‟” (page 479) The October 1

1952 issue explained: “We must hate in th

truest sense, which is to regard with extrem

and active aversion, to consider as loathsome

odious, filthy, to detest … We cannot love thos

hateful enemies, for they are fit only for de

struction … These are the true sentimentsdesires and prayers of the righteous ones to

day.” – pages 599, 600.

The July 15, 1992 Watchtower issue con

firmed this viewpoint: “Our attitude towar

apostates should be that of David, who declared

„Do I not hate those? … With a complete hatre

I do hate them.‟” (page 12) What an impudenc

it was that Jesus dared to disagree with thi

clear doctrine! He said in public: “You hear

Jesus contradicted the “truth as taught by Jehovah‟s

Witnesses” according to which Christians must hate

apostates and other “enemies” with “perfect hatred”

Page 11: witchtower_07_2010

that it was said [to wit, in the Watchtower], „You

must love your neighbor and hate your enemy.‟

However, I say to you: Continue to love your

enemies and to pray for those persecuting you.”

(Matthew 5:43) He prized his own word above

the Watchtower‟s and claimed that “he knows

better … than the „faithful and discreet slave!‟”

 –  The Watchtower, August 1, 1980, page 19.

Moses, James and Jesus were not the initi-

ators of these false teachings; they only shared

in spreading them. The one who brought these

“teachings contrary to Bible truth as taught by

Jehovah's Witnesses” into the world was Je-

hovah. (Deuteronomy 26:16; 2 Timothy 3:16;

2 Peter 1:21) So, more than anyone else he is

guilty of apostasy.

False Religion

False teachings are not the only manifesta-

tion of apostasy. The book  Pay Attention to

Yourselves and to All the Flock continues to

explain: “Celebrating a false religious holiday

would be similar to performing any other act of

false worship.” (page 95) Hence we must con-

sider Jehu an apostate too, for “Jehu collected

all the people together and said to them …

„Call all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers

and all his priests to me. Do not let a single onebe missing, because I have a great sacrifice for

Baal … Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal!”

 – 2 Kings 10:18-20.

Jehu participated in the worship of Baal

Abraham imitated the pagan custom of sacrificing children

Though he murdered the worshippers o

Baal afterwards, first he supported false worship and even shared in it to a certain degree

However, he was not the only one who defile

himself through pagan rites. Child sacrifice

also were a custom of false religion, especiall

connected to the worship of Molech an

 Anammelech. (The Watchtower, January 15

1988, page 31; Insight on the Scriptures, vol

ume I, page 103) Abraham imitated this prac

tice and also tried to offer up his son. (Genesi

22:10) God however kept him from doing d

and rescued Isaac.

Divisions

According to the book  Pay Attention t

Yourselves and to All the Flock, “causing div

sions” is another aspect of apostasy. Up to th

present day, Jesus is “causing divisions” with

in families; he said: “Do you imagine I came t

give peace on the earth? No, indeed, I tell you

but rather division. For from now on there wil

be five in one house divided, three against tw

and two against three. They will be divided

father against son and son against father

mother against daughter and daughter agains

her mother, mother-in-law against her daugh

ter-in-law and daughter-in-law against he

mother-in-law.”  – Luke 12:51-53.

Spiritism

“The practice of spiritism” is another sign of

apostasy and must be punished with disfellow-

shipping. ( Pay Attention to Yourselves and to

All the Flock, page 95) “The practice of spirit-

ism is involvement with the demons.” (What

Does the Bible Really Teach?, page 100) Jeho-

vah‟s Witnesses must “refuse to have any con-tact with wicked spirits.” –   The Watchtower,

January 15, 1988, page 5.

Jesus did not comply with this prohibition.

He spoke with demons and even did them a

favor. Once “the demons began to entreat him,

saying, „If you expel us, send us forth into the

herd of swine.‟ Accordingly he said to them,

„Go!‟ They came out and went off into the

swine.” (Matthew 8:31, 32) Instead of avoiding

any contact with these wicked spirits, hetalked to them and even granted their demand!

Jehovah acted similarly. When Satan, “the

ruler of the demons,” appeared in front of his

throne, he did not bundle him out; rather he

asked him: “Where do you come from?” (Job

1:7; Matthew 9:34) Instead of being “on guard

against the Devil,” Jehovah chatted with him

like with an employee. (The Watchtower, June 1,

1986, page 11) He granted Satan‟s demand and

accommodated him. – Job 1:12.

John associated with “seven spirits”

Jesus talked with the dead

Another “major feature of spiritism i

claimed communication with the dead.” (Insigh

on the Scriptures, volume II, page 1027) Thi

form of spiritism was also practiced by Jesus

“Two men were conversing with him, who wer

Moses and Elijah. These appeared … and be

gan talking about his departure.” (Luke 9:30

31) Of course, “long-dead Moses and Elijah

were not literally present,” and “any message

that seem to come from a dead … one reall

originate with the demons.” –  The Watchtower

April 1, 2000, page 13; What Does the Bibl

Really Teach?, page 156.

“The practice of spiritism” may also includ

“looking for omens.” ( Awake! , July 22, 1990

page 3) Thus Joseph was a spiritist and an

apostate, since his attendant claimed tha

Joseph “expertly reads omens.” (Genesis 44:5

Another “popular form of spiritism is … at

tempting to find out about the future or th

unknown with the help of spirits.” ( Knowledg

That Leads to Everlasting Life, page 112) Thi

form was obviously practiced by the apostl

John, who sent regards “from the seven spir

its” in the preface of his Revelation –  mayb

the same spirits that Jesus mentioned in

parable. – Revelation 1:4; Luke 11:26.

Idolatry

“Idolatry” is also a proof of apostasy, and

“Idolatry includes the possession and use of

images and pictures that are employed in false

religion.” ( Pay Attention to Yourselves and to

All the Flock, page 95) The apostle Paul even

made use an altar of false religion in his minis-

try and suggested that it would depict Jeho-vah! – Acts 17:23.

The “images and pictures that are employed

in false religion” surely also included the tera-

phim, the family idols, which Rachel stole

from her father Laban. (Genesis 31:19) Jacob

at first did not know it, but he must have come

to know it later because it is written in the

Bible. (Genesis 31:32) Then at the latest he

would have been obliged to rebuke Rachel

sharply and to dispose of the idols  –  but the

Bible does not report that he would have done

so. Hence he became an accessory to Rachel‟s

idolatry; therefor both are apostates.

Paul employed an altar of false religion

The pre-Christian witnesses should have been

obedient to the “faithful and discreet slave”

Judge Gideon became an apostate too an

even made others follow his bad example

“Gideon returned to his home in Ophrah and

had … gold made into a statue, which the Isra

elites soon started worshiping.” – Judges 8:27

CEV .

“Loyalty to Jehovah‟s visible organizatio

also means having nothing to do with apos

tates. Loyal Christians will not be curiouabout what such people have to say.” (Th

Watchtower, March 15, 1996, page 17) Ther

can be no doubt that Moses, James, Jesus

Jehovah, Jehu, Abraham, Joseph, John, Jacob

and Gideon are apostates and have to be disfel

lowshipped at once, so that Jehovah‟s shee

can be protected from their mindset and thei

corrupting influence. Their writings “expres

thoughts that are poisonous to the spiritualit

of a Christian.” –  The Watchtower, February 1

1987, page 28.

There are a number of other sins which cer

tain pre-Christian Jehovah‟s Witnesses ar

guilty of. These will be discussed in the nex

issue.

How God Cares for Us“Never be anxious!” – Matthew 6:31

The Watchtower   regularly urges Christians to “cutback on employment.” (The Watchtower , January 15,

2008, page 18) Every now and then it also recommends

to „quit one‟s job and become a minister.‟ (The Watch-

tower , September 1, 1989, page 25). Of course, whoever

heeds this counsel reduces his income and has less

money, or none at all, to purchase food and clothes.

In such a situation, one could be anxious, but Jesus

exhorted all Christians: “Never be anxious and say,

„What are we to eat?‟ or, „What are we to drink?‟” (Mat-

thew 6:31) At first sight, that seems to be impossible.

But Jesus also explained why Christians should not beanxious: “Observe intently the birds of heaven, because

they do not sow seed or reap or gather into store-

houses; still your heavenly Father feeds them.” (Mat-

thew 6:26) Indeed, “if  Jehovah cares for birds … how

much more will he care for humans.” –  “Come Be My

Follower” , page 115.

The key to understanding this Bible verse was

revealed by the October 15, 2007 Watchtower. It said

regarding Christians that “God would provide for them

just as he provides for „the birds of heaven.‟” (page 6)

This means that God provides for Christians the sameway as he does for the birds.

How does he care for the birds? Does he have them

accept a secular job, so that they earn money and can

purchase food at supermarkets? Does he let them farm

worms and grow fruit? No, rather he contrived matters

for the birds as Gerd Winterfeld describes on his web-

site: “In Germany they swipe the cherries, and in the

Philippines they eat up our bananas!” Awake! magazine

reported that tomtits and “eleven other species of

birds” raided milk wagons; “on a consignment of milk to

a school … more than 50 out of 300 milk bottles were

opened [by the tomtits] before the schoolkeeper could

get to them.” – March 22, 1972, page 20.

So God provides for the birds by allowing them to

steal food from humans. Exactly the same way he pro-

vides for Christians heeding the advice given by his

channel of communication and quitting or reducintheir secular job. The house-to-house ministry offer

enough opportunities for stealing fruits and vegetable

from the homeowners‟ gardens, especially at those wh

are not at home. If the garden doors are locked, we ca

imitate the tomtits and force entry; hence it is recom

mended to always have proper tools in our witnessin

case.

There are some countries where stealing food from

infidels is prohibited by the secular law. But may w

never forget: “We must obey God as ruler rather tha

men.” (Acts 5:29) Should we actually be arrested anbrought before court – as foretold by Jesus – we ca

refer to religious freedom which is protected by th

constitution in most countries. – Matthew 10:17.

Don‟t we recognize Jehovah‟s wisdom in this a

rangement? The worldlings “will soon be destroyed

anyway; one way or the other, their property belongs t

Jehovah‟s Witnesses then. (The Watchtower , May 15

2006, page 5) That‟s why Jehovah allows us even now

so to speak, to receive an advance of our prey. Are w

not grateful for this wonderful provision?

“ You delivered us as sheep to the butcher.” (Psalm 44:11, The Message)

The Psalmist wrote regarding Jehovah: “He

is our God, and we are the people of his pas-turage and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalm 95:7)

Jesus too often compared his disciples to sheep;

he said about himself: “I am the fine shepherd,

and I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”

(John 10:14) Furthermore he has some “other

sheep,” indicating that there are two types of

Christians. How can we prove ourselves to be

worthy sheep?

One issue is clothing. Genuine sheep wear

nothing but sheepskins, and as Christian sheepwe should do the same. That‟s why the apostle

Paul wrote that faithful worshippers of God

“went about in sheepskins.” (Hebrews 11:37)

Besides, sheep do not wash their coat, even if it

is dirty and verminous.

Christians must be sheep

The Bible does not mention processe

clothes from sheep‟s wool, like sweaters osocks. Hence every Christian must decide fo

himself whether he can square such pieces o

clothing with his conscience. Wearing othe

fibers, such as cotton, polyester or blende

fabric, is out of the question for Christian

though. – Leviticus 19:19; Zephaniah 1:8.

Sheep are vegetarians, and they mainl

feed on grass. To prove ourselves worthy shee

of Jehovah, we too should “never again ea

flesh at all” like the apostle Paul. (1 Corinth

ans 8:13) In a spiritual respect too, we shoul

content ourselves with the ever same Watch

tower articles, just as sheep always eat th

same type of grass.

An encyclopedia says regarding sheep: “I

common parlance the sheep is often considere

the epitome of cowardice or stupidity, an

scholars often follow this opinion.” (Encylopae

dia Wikipedia, German edition) Indeed, stupidity is a prominent feature of all sheep. If w

still go to school, we should leave it as early a

possible to remain as stupid as possible. Rathe

than considering vocational training, we shoul

dedicate all our time to the preaching work.

If we are advanced in years and have al

ready gained a certain education, we shoul

honestly ask God for forgiveness. Even though

it won‟t be possible to recover our original ignorance, we can adopt some measures, such a

completely eschewing educational programs on

TV and cultural events. Rather, regular stud

of Watchtower and  Awake! and sharing in th

Christian ministry will help us perfecting ou

foolishness.

Famous zoologist Dr. Alfred Brehm wrote

regarding the sheep: “Its timorous disposition

is ridiculous … Any mysterious or unusual

noise startles the entire flock.” ( Brehm’s Life of

 Animals, 1895 edition, volume I, page 464)

Thus Christians should avoid every contact

with the world where they could hear „unusual

noises,‟ i. e. worldly ideas. Jesus rather in-

structed his sheep: “Be in fear of him that can

destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.“

 – Matthew 10:28.

When Jesus “arrives in his glory … he will

put the sheep on his right.” (Matthew 25:31, 33).

What grand future awaits God‟s sheep? The

sons of Korah wrote that “sheep … have been

appointed to Sheol itself; death itself will shep-

herd them.” (Psalm 49:14) Accordingly Jehovah

delivered the nation of Israel “as sheep to the

butcher.” (Psalm 44:11, MSG) Indeed, through

his prophet Jeremiah he announced regarding

his worshippers: “I will lead them away to die,

like sheep, lambs, and goats being led to the

butcher.” – Jeremiah 51:40, CEV .

Like in the day of Asa, when “seven thou-

sand sheep” were sacrificed on one day, there

will be an enormous bloodshed. (2 Chronicles

15:22) But “it must occur in that day that an

individual will preserve alive … two sheep.”

 – Isaiah 7:21.

True, not all humans will be “burned with

fire” and become “manure upon the face of the

ground.” (Matthew 13:40; Jeremiah 8:2) Two

people will be allowed to survive, so that they

can found a new human family. Then the con

ditions that prevailed in Eden will have bee

fully restored, as Jehovah‟s Witnesses hav

long foretold.

It is an unparalleled honor to be accepte

as sheep by Jehovah. Are we not happy abou

this grand privilege? Surely we want to im

prove our sheeplikeness every day, so that wcan prove ourselves worthy!

How to attain happiness

Even if you have been raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, you can gain happiness from using

your own mind. If you start thinking for yourself, you can gain accurate knowledge regard

ing the Watchtower Society and the house-to-house-ministry, and you will come to know

that the “faithful and discreet slave” is in fact a slave driver. If  you would welcome further
