Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)

• Funded by the Clinical and Translational Science Award (UL1 funding mechanism)

• Provides funding to develop infrastructure to facilitate Clinical and Translational Science

• Aimed to accelerate the pace of discovery

• 10 different cores for investigators

Multidisciplinary Advisory Committee - MAC

• Senior investigators from all of the Schools of the Health Sciences

• Meets weekly and guides direction, focus and components:• Select Scholars• Monitoring and evaluation of each Scholar• Monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness of the

program• Participate in annual review of each Scholar’s progress

report and their plans

Eligibility• Be US citizen or permanent resident, have a clinical doctorate or Ph.D.

degree or its equivalent

• Commit at least 75 percent effort

• Not be or have been a Principal Investigator on an R01 or equivalent• Have a faculty appointment at Pitt by the start of the CRSP program

• Be committed to developing a clinical research career

• You cannot have another K award pending to apply– If you have a K award under review, but are interested in the KL2, email (

[email protected]) a two page letter of interest • 1) brief information on the pending K application (K series, funding agency, review

date, etc) • 2) a brief description of training plan and • 3) aims for the proposed research with a brief discussion of the approach.

postdoctoral training • Commitment to multidisciplinary clinical

Training• Those without MS or equivalent training,

should provide specific plan of the degree they will obtain

• Additional courses required by CRSP • Individualized additional training as needed by

the area of focus

Research• Research plan for up to 5 years, use NIH

format, describe methods in as much detail as possible

• How is the research multidisciplinary?• How is the research innovative?

Mentoring• At least two disciplines—should be very

divergent• Indicate how the two or more disciplines will

advance the research and career• Indicate how the mentors will work together

• Specific about weekly meetings, joint meetings, grants, papers

• Provide a schedule

• Department, divisions’ research environment• Provide examples of success in the Division

assistants, lab support, etc

• Career advancement—provide commitment from Chair and the Dean

• Commitment for a faculty position for the scholar and type of position

Mechanism of Support

• Scholar salary: 75% support

• Research, travel, tuition: up to 25 K each year
