Route 66 was created
in 1926 and Lebanon was an important stop along the way from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean. Today, “Mother Road” fans from around the world travel through Lebanon as they retrace the famed two-lane. Many of them stay at the classic Munger Moss Motel, built in 1946 and known for its colorful neon sign. Heading west to Lebanon on I-44, take exit 135 and follow the signs; traveling east, take exit 127.
Another way to explore this historic highway is to visit Lebanon’s Route
66 Museum and Research Center, opened in 2004. The impressive 3,500-square-foot museum inside the Laclede County Library features faithful recreations of a 1950s gas station and a classic diner, plus a rotating display of antique cars. The collection includes thousands of Route 66 books, magazines and videos. Admission is free. 915 S. Jefferson, (417) 532-2148.

Goodtimesare catching!
The good
times are
“catching”
a Bennett
Spring State Park. Called the “eye of the sacred one” by Native Americans, more than 100 million gallons a day flow from this powerful spring, the fourth largest in Missouri, where more than 320,000 pounds of rainbow and brown trout are released annually. Anglers gather here from across the region for opening day, 6 a.m., March 1. The season runs through October 31. From early November to early February, it’s “catch-and-release” season on Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays. A fishing license and daily trout tag, both available at the park store, are required during the regular season.
Besides fishing, this popular
and scenic park offers 12 miles of hiking
trails, Niangua River float trips, an interpretive center, a rustic dining lodge (built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps) and cabins, condos and camping. 26248 Highway 64A, Park Office (417) 532-4338, Lodging (417) 532-4307.

Hunting
With all of the
woodlands
surrounding
Lebanon, you know it’s “got game,”
especially deer. Bow-and-arrow season runs from Oct. 1-Jan. 15. Gun season takes place in November. Turkeys also are a favorite with game hunters and may be taken in April, May and October. In fact, Laclede County is one of the top 10 in Missouri for the number of wild turkeys taken during the springtime hunt. Fall and winter also are popular times to hunt duck, quail, geese and small animals such as rabbits and squirrels.
Near Lebanon, hunting is available at the Mark Twain National Forest, Lead Mine
State Forest and state conservation areas. Those wanting to use private lands must, of course, first seek permission from the landowner. Hunting permits are required and can be purchased at a Missouri Department of Conservation office, a local permit vendor, by phone at (800) 392-4115 or online at www.wildlifelicense.com/mo.
Keep your bow skills sharp at the Osage Fork
Conservation Area Archery Range, just four miles south of Lebanon, where static targets are set at various depths throughout the woods. Canary Road, (417) 532-7612. Or visit High Prairie Bird Hunts, featuring trap, skeet and sporting clays, catfish pay lake, upland bird hunting and indoor/outdoor archery. 15742 English Road, (417) 532-4734.
