What is an E-Postal?
Did you know that USMS holds five long distance “E-Postal” National Championship events throughout the year? What is an “E-postal” you ask? Well it’s simple, an E-postal is an event that you enter, swim on your own in a pool, then send in your results to USMS online or by mail. Your results are tabulated along with other USMS swimmers across the country. The events are: the one hour swim, 5k, 10k, 3000yd and 6000yd. These are individual events but you can also combine your times with teammates and enter the relay division. You can compete in all five if you so choose. Those who do will receive a commemorative patch.
How does it work?
2019 event details and entry information are found on the USMS web site at the following link: USMS E-Postal. For all events there are some basic rules:
• An adult must be on deck acting as head timer/starter/referee. This can be a coach, friend, or fellow swimmer.
• Each swimmer must have a verifier to count laps and record cumulative splits every two lengths of the pool. (Split sheets can be downloaded from the USMS website.) One person may count for no more than two swimmers. Again this can be a friend, coach or teammate. If you are swimming it solo or with one other person, this person can also be the head timer/starter/referee.
• 2 swimmers max per lane with split lanes (no circle swimming)
*USMS automatically converts meter to equivalent yard distances/times)
When is it and how do I enter?
The five events are held throughout the year. You swim the event first, then go online and enter before the last day of the event. (Split sheets for recording times and distances are available on the USMS website). For 2019 the events will be held as follows:
• One Hour Swim - January 1- February 28 - Right now!
• 5k/10k - May 15 - September 15
• 3000/6000 - September 15-November 15
How do I get my results?
Complete results for each event will be available on the USMS website. Prizes are awarded for top ten finishers and all participants are able to purchase gear commemorating their swim.
Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club News Editor’s Note: The Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club (WMAC) is the regional club for all registered Wisconsin swimmers. We compete in Nationals as one club against other regional teams, including Illinois Masters and Michigan Masters. As I write this my thermometer reads minus 24 degrees Fahrenheit. Spring nationals in Arizona is looking pretty good!
USMS Nationals will be held April 25-28 in Mesa, AZ. Here is the link for general information at USMS, https://www.usms.org/events/national-championships/pool-national-championships/2019-pool-national-championships/2019-spring-national-championship.
Remember, you can swim 3 individual events, plus relays, without meeting a qualifying time. If you are thinking about going, please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. The Wisconsin Team is planning on staying at the Hyatt Place Phoenix Mesa, but you are welcome to stay at any hotel. Click here to see hotel and travel information. More information will be forthcoming.

Seventy nine swimmers competed in this year’s short course swim meet at Pabst Farms. Conversations in the bleachers typically started off with a rundown of holiday treats and meals, and the need to get back into the pool. This meet included medals! Possibly inspired by binge watching Marie Kondo over the holidays, WMAC President Mike Murray cleaned out a closet and found a treasure trove of old swimming medals that sparked joy.
Continuing his assault on the Mens 40-44 SCY record book, Andrew Babcock swam a 5:15.63 500 Freestyle, beating the existing record—on the books since 1999—by over 3 seconds. Not bad for this time of year.
The youngest swimmer was Ashley Higgins (23), who cranked out a number of freestyle, butterfly and IM events. The oldest was backstroke master Fred Salzman (86), who swam in six events—all on his back.
In the 200 butterfly the spotlight was on Scott Conley, the sole swimmer in that event, who finished with booming cheers from the stands.
We had a number of swimmers from smaller workout groups from around the state including Baraboo, Harbor Masters, Tri-Faster, Ozaukee, Milwaukee Rec., Pleasant Prairie and Pinnacle Health.

Another Great Day in West Bend Correspondent: Carl Millholland
Driving to West Bend on an early December morning provided a brilliant sunrise across the eastern sky. I’ve always looked forward to the state short course championships. This was my first Masters swim meet. I remember at the start of the 1500M freestyle that day, the guy a few lanes over warned that he planned to go out fast to get the record at the 800M mark. That was the last I saw of him. His name was James Biles.
The pool was a little dingy and dark that
first meet. Then a 30-year old facility (built in the 1980s when the metric system was all the vogue), it was on
its last legs. It cost the schools a fortune to heat and operate. But a group called West Bend Schools Need
Pools raised enough money to keep the pool alive. I believe some Wisconsin Masters swimmers chipped in.
It now includes rooftop solar panels for heating and start-of-the-art lighting. It’s a great pool.
On December 1st, 2018, 69 swimmers completed in 222 splashes. A number of state SCM records fell
that day, particularly among women. A few stalwarts from Illinois came up to round out the meet. It was a
great day, and it was great to see so many familiar faces and friends.

2018 Wisconsin Water Warrior Results Melodee Nugent [email protected]
This 2-week swim challenge (14 consecutive days) took place between November 1st and December 31st of 2018. The goal was to challenge yourself and swim as much as you can for the 2-week period (swimming every day is not required). There were 29 participants in the Wisconsin Water Warriors event this year—less than previous years, but we did add some new faces: Doug Mering, Robert Turner, Gwyn Guenther, Patricia Hagen, Liz Zélandais and Jane Dillion Stewart.
Combined, the participants swam a total distance of 1,047,450 yards (595 miles) in 2-weeks, with an average of
36,119 total yards (20.5 miles). More women (72%) participated than men (28%). The average age of the swimmers was
62 years of age, with the youngest swimmer 44 years old and the oldest was 87 years old. Once again, we had our
Rockstar seniors – in the 80+ age group: Fred Salzmann (86 years young) swam 34,500 yards and Lois Goddard (87 years
young) swam 13,500 yards.
Congratulations to the Baraboo group who had the most swimmers participate. They will receive an award for their
combined efforts. This group included: Kara McCarty, Mary Hamburg, Katy Mering, Ann Berres-Olivotti, Doug Mering,
Gwyn Guenther and Tim Capps.
The largest age groups were the 50-54 year-old swimmers with a total of 6 (21%) swimmers in this group. Dan
DeWeerdt was the top male swimmer with 75,100 yards and I was the top female swimmer with 94,700 yards.
I know what you are thinking … what happened to me this year with a mere 94,700 yards as compared to previous
years (last year 155,000)! I had to have hip revision surgery in early November (my implant from May 2017 failed). I was
not allowed in the water until December 6th. I built up my distance quickly and was only using the pull buoy for the month
of December. I was back to my happy place! Here are the results for 2018:
Age Group Place Name Yards Age Group Place Name Yards
50-54 1st Dan DeWeerdt (6) 75,100 40-44 1st Kara McCarty (2) 20,975
2nd Tim Capps (3) 37,750 45-49 1st Jennifer May (3) 30,300
60-64 1st Tim Potter (4) 30,651 2nd Gwyn Guenther (1) 6,611
