Pilots who become apprehensive or their saety, or any reason, shouldrequest assistance immediately. To increase your chances o contacting
help, remember the our Cs:1. Coness your predicament to yoursel and to any
ground radio station.
2. Communicate pass on as much inormation as neededor requested.
3. Climb, i possible, or better radar and DF detection.
Radio contact range is also increased with altitude.
4. Comply with advice and instructions received. Pilots o IFR ightsexperiencing twoway radio ailure, while in IMC, are expected toadhere to the procedures set orth in FAR 91.185; IFR operations:

A pilot in any distress or urgency condition should immediately take the
ollowing action, not necessarily in the order listed, to obtain assistance:
1. Obtain and/or maintain radio contact with an air trac acility.While in radio contact, continue squawking your assignedtransponder code and i available Mode C, altitude encoding,unless instructed to do otherwise.
2. I equipped with a transponder and unable to establish voice
communications, squawk the emergency code 77, and iavailable Mode C altitude encoding.
3. Transmit a distress or urgency message immediately.

RULES PERTAINING TO AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS,INCIDENTS, OVERDUE AIRCRAFT, AND SAFETY
INVESTIGATIONS[National Transportation Saety Board,Procedural Regulation, 49 CFR 83 (in part)].
1. Immediate Notication
The operator o an aircrat shall immediately, and by the
most expeditious means available, notiy the nearest National Transportation
Board, Bureau o Aviation Saety Field Oce when:
A. An aircrat accident o any o the ollowing listed
incidents occur:
1. Flight control system malunction or ailure.
2. Inability o any required ight crew member to perorm
normal ight duties as a result o injuries or illness.
3. Failure o any internal turbine engine component that resultsin the escape o debris other than out the exhaust path.
4. Inight re.
5. Aircrat collide in ight.
6. Damage to property, other than the aircrat, estimated to exceed

market value in the event o total loss, whichever is less.
7. For large multiengine aircrat (more than
12,5 pounds maximum takeof weight).
8. Inight ailure o electrical systems which requires the
sustained use o an emergency bus powered by a backup
source such as a battery, auxiliary power unit, or air driven
generator to retain ight control or essential instruments.
9. Inight ailure o hydraulic systems that results in sustained
reliance on the sole remaining hydraulic or mechanical system
or movement o ight control suraces.
1. Sustained loss o the power or thrust produced
by two or more engines.
11. An evacuation o an aircrat in which an emergency
egress system is utilized.
12. Release o all or a portion o a propeller blade rom an
aircrat, excluding release caused solely by ground contact.
13. A complete loss o inormation, excluding ickering, rommore than 5 percent o an aircrats cockpit displays known as:
Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) displays;
Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) displays;Electronic Centralized Aircrat Monitor (ECAM) displays; or
Other displays o this type, which generally include a primary
ight display (PFD), primary navigation display (PND), and
other integrated displays; Airborne Collision and AvoidanceSystem (ACAS) resolution advisories issued either:
When an aircrat is being operated on an instrument ight
rules ight plan and compliance with the advisory is necessary
to avert a substantial risk o collision between two or moreaircrat; or
To an aircrat operating in class A airspace.
14. Damage to helicopter tail or main rotor blades, including ground
damage, that requires major repair or replacement o the blade(s).
15. Any event in which an operator, when operating an airplane
as an air carrier at a publicuse airport on land:
Lands or departs on a taxiway, incorrect runway,
or other area not designed as a runway; or

Experiences a runway incursion that requires the operator
or the crew o another aircrat or vehicle to take immediate
corrective action to avoid a collision.
B. An aircrat is overdue and is believed to have
been involved in an accident.
2. MANNER OF NOTIFICATION
The most expeditious method o notication to the NationalTransportation Board by the operator will be determined by thecircumstances existing at that time. The National Transportation SaetyBoard has advised that any o the ollowing would be considered
examples o the type o notication that would be acceptable:
A. Direct telephone notifcation
B. Telegraphic notifcation.
C. Notifcation to the Federal Aviation Administration whowould in turn notiy the NTSB by direct communication;i.e. dispatch or telephone.
3. REPORTS
A. The operator shall fle a report on NTSB orm 612.1or 712.2 available rom the National Transportation SaetyBoard, Washington, DC 2594.
1. Within ten (1) days ater an occurrence or
which notication is required in 1(a) or (b) above.
2. When ater seven (7) days an overdue aircratis still missing.
3. Upon request o an authorized representativeo the National Transportation Saety Board:
a. Each crew member, i physically able at the
time the report is submitted, shall attach thereto a statement setting orth the acts, conditionsand circumstances relating to the accident oroccurrence as they appear to him/her. I thecrew member is incapacitated, he/she shallsubmit the statement as soon as he/she isphysically able.
