INTRODUCTION

It is transmission of power without using wires

In this technique microwaves are used for transmission of electrical power.

Power at very high frequency is transmitted Efficiency is increased by increasing the

frequency

HISTORY In 1899 Nicola Tesla tranfered electrical

power through ‘Tesla coils’.Tesla coil a high mast of 200-ft with a 3 ft-diameter ball

at its top. He fed 300 kW power to the Tesla coil

resonated at 150 kHz. The RF potential at the top sphere reached 100 MV.

MIT started a program “WiTricity” in which a project was made.

Energy was transferred upto 2m by helical shaped coils.

Efficiency of this transmission was 40%.

Energy is transferred by mutual induction.

It’s range is very less. Example: Brush charging pad ,

transformer etc.

RESONANT COUPLING

It is combination of resonance & inductive coupling.

. In resonant coupling range is few meters. In this coupling

circuit is tuned to mutual frequency.

TRANSMISSION THROUGH MICROWAVE

In 1970 microwaves were used for transmission of power.

The efficiency was 40-50%

It was done from space to ground by Japanes scientists in 1987.

Solar power satellites are used to get solar power more efficiently.

SPS are placed at geostationary orbits.

Solar power is captured by photocells &a satellite may have 400 million cells.

Energy is send to earth via microwaves/ LASER.

Environmental issues

It creates interference with the other communication system.

This interference can be removed by increasing frequency band.

It is not harmful for living entities.

ADVANTAGES

No transmission losses are persant in WPT system which are 30% approx.

Saving of wires & towers cost as no lines are required in this system

It is estimated that before 2030 all transmission in the world will be wireless
