4 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2011 WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE

Since i was a kid, my grandfather, MawMike (dubbed by my brother) would take me running. I remember those miles feeling slow and all I wanted was the finish line so I could finally stop and walk. My mantra was, “are we there yet?” However, MawMike wouldn’t let me stop. He encouraged me through emphasizing the need to be patient but also to “keep up the pace kid.” Years later, in the fall of 2000, I had set a goal upon myself to run and finish a marathon. It was something MawMike and I had always said we would do. I spent the fall training. Building up the stamina to maintain a run for 26 miles was a challenge and most of the time I was by myself, running in all sorts of weather and conditions as well as managing the internal conversation of “can I do this?” After 6 months of training, the race day finally came. While I did not have a large cheering crowd at the end, I finished in 3 hours 40 minutes. After it was all said and done, there were no pats on the back or awards, there was only the simple satisfaction of setting out for a goal, enduring and achieving it. As we welcome this year with high hopes and continued perseverance, The Wire Rope Exchange begins its 26th year in publication and my 4th year as Editor. The first issue of the year is a time to recall the highlights of the previous year as well as look forward to upcoming events and features that we have planned for 2011. In hindsight our industry last year can be best described like a marathon, we’re a bit weathered and tired but not beaten. Despite the lackluster economy, we saw an enormous amount of innovation and improvement as well as initiative to give back to the community. We saw associations and individual companies come together to offer materials, manpower and expertise after the devastating earthquakes in Haiti. Web Sling & Tie Down Association (WSTDA), Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) and Industrial Supply Association (ISA) all helped coordinate efforts and encourage participation through supply donations. Harrington Hoists and Columbus McKinnon were some of the first companies to step forward and give to Haiti Relief. We also saw Chant Engineering participate in ‘Hire Just One,’ a national program designed to put unemployed individuals back to work and get our economy back on the road again. In the Exchange, we talked directly to the dream team, Bilco Wire Rope and Supply, and found out how two young college kids, through sheer hard work and determination,

made a thriving business. We learned of a ‘lone star success story’ with Holloway Houston, a company continuing to set records. We joined the revolution, learning how Harrington Hoists followed in the footsteps of their founder’s ingenuity of product innovation. We caught a glimpse of the surging wind power market and how the many crane and rigging companies are taking advantage of this growing field. We met a fellow rigger, Scott Fishfader, who left the culinary world to cook up his own business as a wire rope man with Associated Wire Rope and Rigging. We talked with so many businesses that we’ve known since the beginning who continued to persevere, grow internally, and simply improve across the board in order to become even more prominent than before. In 2011, we’re getting our second wind. If ‘necessity is the mother of invention,’ then the past couple of years have certainly produced some long-awaited opportunities. Ideas that have been born over the past few years but have been shelved until the light at the end of the recession can be seen are beginning to surface and take root. It is only appropriate to kick off 2011 with a look at how one company, N4 Systems, has developed a product that is literally changing the way the companies look at safety and streamlining the changing complexities of safety compliance and assurance. We highlight the biggest sale in company history for WireCo Worldgroup as the supplier for the Manhattan Bridge reconstruction project. We also spotlight IntegriCert and their new universal shackle, a perfect example of how we are continuously improving our products. Finally, we summarize the new tax incentives for companies who are considering purchasing new or used equipment in 2011. I look forward to another wonderful year with the Exchange and thank the many listers, subscribers, advertisers, and friends who continue to count on the Exchange as the rigging industry’s voice and trusted resource.

Efficiency, a popular buzzword thrown around in a business environment, is a word sometimes used to motivate employees to be more productive while at other times is used to streamline regular processes within the company. Regardless of its use in the business setting, the ultimate goal of efficiency is to do something well without wasted energy.

a SpeciFic Solution to Modern SafetyN4 Systems,

Changing the Way We Do Business

>>Normal business efficiency is a measurement of strives

against incremental improvements, inch-by-inch or day-by-day, the product of efficiency celebrates small victories. But what happens when the entire business approach is changed rather than just enhanced? In other words, why settle on just increasing utility when you can revolutionize a specific process and open an entirely new opportunity? This is exactly what was started within the rigging and lifting industry in recent years. N4 Systems, the operating company behind Field ID, based out of Toronto, Canada, initially set out to simply improve an inspection system for a client by making it more efficient, but instead created a novel approach that has revolutionized the way companies manage inspection and safety compliance data for products throughout the industry.

Somen Mondal, CEO of Field ID, and Shaun Ricci, COO of Field ID, previously were independent software consultants working in various IT fields when they first were introduced to the rigging and lifting industry. In

Field ID integrated with a Chant Test Bed

WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2011 31

2006, Knut Buschmann, President and General Manager of Unirope, consulted with Mondal and Ricci to help create the technology and foster the ‘idea’ that ultimately would form the Field ID system. Buschmann stated, “The initial idea was to integrate a new database into our inspection system.”

“The standard method of inspection compliance up to that point was all manual” recalls Buschmann. As such, inspection compliance was solely dependent upon individual customer updates, done without uniformity and often leading to unverifiable or even a lack of data altogether. “The system was overwhelming… with too much paperwork. Tracking wasn’t possible, nobody bothered as it was too much manual work,” Buschmann admits. This lack of a uniform mechanism for inspection compliance opened a competitive advantage when Buschmann started using Field ID as they each realized the potential held in various areas of application for the new emerging technology.

To provide some technical background, the premise was to take the idea behind supply chain, pharmaceutical

or cattle tracking (a system used for many years) where they use RFID chips to track products. The RFID chip is a commodity product, similar to a barcode that only acts as a key to real data. Think of a credit card, where the actual card is just a big long serial number, and the banks store all the transaction data securely. The seed was planted for Mondal and Ricci, while working with Buschmann, that the same idea of tracking and traceability could be applied within the rigging and lifting industry. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and is currently being used in a myriad of ways including animal/livestock tracking, toll road payments, hospital supplies, airline baggage checking, and soon possibly even at your local grocery store.

With the technological advancements afforded by RFID in conjunction with an inclination for industries to move further and further down the path of providing multiple online interfaces for various portable digital devices, the conditions were ripe for N4 to launch Field ID – an innovative solution that uses RFID barcodes, serial numbers,

handheld devices and the Internet to automate Inspection and Safety Compliance Management (ISCM). As Mondal explains, “the goal of software development is to learn the exact problem of a customer, create a specific solution, and then ‘productize’ it to a larger client base.” They realized that their ‘simple idea’ could be applied on a much larger scale. What originated with a system designed for one specific end-user was quickly applied to distributors, manufacturers, end users and inspectors alike – all individually and collectively able to take advantage of improved inspection and safety compliance management.

From their website, the Field ID system “takes the mystery out of product identification by automatically reading RFID tags and barcodes on all critical pieces of equipment. These tags can then be read by a handheld device that stores and transmits recorded data to a secure hosting infrastructure. Once [the] data is collected, it can be accessed any time using Field ID’s unique Compliance Engine. Entirely web based, the engine allows you to check whether or not your site is compliant, and what steps need to be taken in order to ensure compliance. The system also maintains an ever-growing database of safety standards.” The end result is a system that is constantly being updated with new features as technology develops and the demand for digital source information continues to increase. This translates to a specific advantage for Field ID and distinguishes itself from other forms of data collection services.

As Mondal explains, “there are three key benefits that we offer our clients. The first is ‘ease of use.’ We can have a rigging shop up and running within our system in one hour. As well, Field ID is 100% web-based, no messy software to install on your desktop.” Additionally, Field ID is “way beyond just an inspection tool [as it] allows the customer to make connections similar to other forms of social networking.” Finally, Mondal states a third major feature offered is full traceability through their ‘safety network’ for customers to mitigate liability and assure confidence in product

integrity. These key benefits coupled with a full support team in-house makes it clear why Field ID has garnered so many clients within the rigging and lifting industry.

Field ID boasts several strong testimonials from companies that explain how their services changed their way of doing business. This was further exhibited when we contacted a few companies and asked them to share some of their thoughts on the integration

of Field ID within their day-to-day operations. Tyrus Smith, former Marketing Manager at Halo Rigging, was tasked with “finding the right system to improve productivity and quality control. [Field ID] was just what we were looking for: traceability, security, and easy to use for all parties involved.” Halo’s previous system, like that of many other rigging companies, “was using paper test certificates, filing cabinets, and fax machines to get test and inspection certificates to our customers” recalls Smith. “This method was time consuming and cumbersome, especially on the weekends or at midnight when a customer is in need of a certificate. We were desperately looking for an upgrade… and we needed it fast because our company was growing rapidly,” added Smith.

Sean Morris, Vice President and Co-Owner, All-Way Wire Rope, describes their decision to choose Field ID in their business

because “we liked the idea of Field ID being a web based program for easy accessibility to information by us and clients as well as the ability to transfer real time data from the field to the database when needed.” What resulted was a “win-win relationship between All-Way, Inc. and our clients with more detailed, accurate reporting, and superior traceability while significantly reducing inspection and reporting time in the field or in house. Plus, Field ID has been a breeze to integrate into our company… it almost seemed too easy” adds Morris.

Mondal is quick to point out the need to make Field ID a viable and easy to use system is a constant challenge. “We have the same challenges as Apple… as the system grows with new features, [the challenge] is to keep it simple to use,” explains Mondal. A difficult or confusing system leads to frustration and a hesitation to even use the system, ultimately eliminating any benefits of the system in the first place. If the customer is always right, then Field ID seems to be meeting this challenge.

Sean Morris sees more companies entering into Field ID type systems in the future as more industries and clients demand the technology and benefits of these systems. “This is where we will see both good and not so good systems in use… and is another reason we are confident and extremely comfortable we chose to integrate Field ID by N4 into our company” explains Morris. “Field ID has continually updated and improved the system features… we believe Field ID will continue to be the leader and set the standards for others.”

If the raving customers are not testament enough of Field ID’s novel approach and strength in method, N4 Systems has recently been awarded two prestigious recognitions as well.

N4 Systems won the Companies-to-Watch Award, one of four separate awards categories that make up the 2010 Deloitte Technology Fast 50™ Awards, the pre-eminent technology awards program in Canada. The Companies-to-Watch Award honors

early-stage Canadian technology companies in business less than five years.

“Companies-to-Watch award winners frequently go on to score high rankings in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 once they have a five-year track record,” said John Ruffolo, National Leader, Technology, Media & Telecommunications Industry Group, Deloitte. “Field ID has quickly distinguished itself for its innovative technology and entrepreneurship and this award recognizes its potential as a future leader in the Canadian technology industry.”

The majority of Companies-to-Watch winners are potential global leaders in technology sectors that didn’t even exist five years ago.

On top of this honor, the company was also ranked No. 31 in the 11th annual PROFIT HOT 50 ranking, further solidifying its

position as a market leader in Inspection and Safety Compliance Management (ISCM) software.

Nobody denies that changes are coming within the rigging and lifting industry. Changes are already happening as more and more sophisticated products and end users are filling the marketplace and add to that, increasingly stringent safety and inspection regulations that are being enacted by government each year. Field ID seems to acknowledge the evolving marketplace in concert with the unique tendencies that specifically affect this industry. Mondal continues to see his biggest competitor as “pen and paper,” recognizing that most, if not all, rigging companies see the benefit in the system he has helped create, but also that most have still not implemented its use in their daily operations. One thing is for certain though, as companies struggle with adapting to the increased demand for digital data at the risk of disrupting what has proved successful for decades, one company is focused on making that transition easy, marketable, and altogether beneficial across the entire industry for generations to come. In one word, the industry will be more efficient. y

“Field ID is way beyond just an inspection tool as it allows full traceability through their ‘safety network’ for customers to mitigate liability and assure confidence in product integrity.”

the reconstruction of the Manhattan bridge

early december, Wireco® Worldgroup commenced shipments for the Manhattan Bridge in New York, NY, representing the largest single sale in WireCo WorldGroup history. The shipments consist of MacWhyte® wire rope suspenders and the main cable wrapping wire.

The New York City Department of Transportation hired Contractor Skanska Koch to oversee the $175 million reconstruction project scheduled for completion in 2014. Skanska Koch was awarded the rehabilitation project for the suspended spans of the structure. The project entails

the complete rework for each of the four main cables on the structure.

WireCo WorldGroup has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Skanska Koch, and has worked closely with them on rehabilitating some of the nation’s most eminent structures. Some of the past projects include the Roosevelt Island Bridge

(NY), the George Washington Bridge (Washington D.C.), and previous work on the Manhattan Bridge (NY).

WireCo WorldGroup’s fabrication facility in St. Joseph, MO produces the ropes and assemblies to tight tolerances to assure shipments meet the New York Department of Transportation’s standards. Shipments are scheduled throughout the rest of 2010 and through December 2011.

Richard Humiston, Global Market Director – Structures, has led WireCo WorldGroup’s involvement in the project since 2005. “The Manhattan Bridge is a historic and beautiful part of the New York City skyline,” Humiston said. “We are proud to be so intimately involved in this important reconstruction process. Our engineers

continue to work closely with Skanska Koch and the New York City DOT to ensure that all specifications are met and exceeded, and we will continue to support their efforts as the replacement suspenders are installed.”

The seismic retrofit of the Manhattan Bridge is currently undergoing the final contract segment of an $834 million reconstruction program with completion scheduled for 2014. The major tasks in the project’s scope include replacement of the bridge suspenders (628 units total – these were last replaced in 1955); re-wrapping of the four cables; and replacement and an upgrade of the necklace lighting.

The Manhattan Bridge is the youngest of the three New York City suspension bridges that span the East River, the Manhattan Bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff (1872-1943). The original construction on the Manhattan Bridge began in 1901 and opened to traffic in December of 1909. Fitted with a set of approaches designed by the renowned architectural team of Carrere and Hastings, the Manhattan Bridge is one of the most aesthetically pleasing of New York City’s transportation structures. Daily, the bridge accommodates approximately 75,000 vehicles, 320,000 mass transit riders and 3,000 pedestrians between Manhattan and Brooklyn. It supports seven lanes of vehicular traffic as well as four subway tracks, upon which four transit train lines operate. The total length of the bridge is 6,855 feet currently supported by four cables each 3,224 feet. y

SkyHook HLV Undergoes Big FreezeThe Boeing Company and SkyHook International Inc. announced that the design of the SkyHook Heavy Lift Vehicle (HLV) has reached the configuration freeze milestone, meaning the aircraft’s overall performance and layout have been established. Boeing and SkyHook have worked on the SkyHook HLV’s structural and systems design and its concept of operations since July 2008, resulting in the following improvements, including: the addition of a three-piece tail for enhanced maneuverability; integration of lifting and thrusting propulsion systems; improved aerodynamics for increased payload capacity and range. “Boeing’s Advanced Rotorcraft Systems team and our industry partner, SkyHook International Inc., are extremely pleased with the progress on the engineering of the aircraft,” said Kenneth Laubsch, SkyHook program manager for Boeing. “We all sense that we are part of something revolutionary in the advancement of this extraordinary technology, and the aerospace industry in general.” The next major program milestone will be

Detailed Design in 2011, which centers on the design, analysis and specification of all hardware, software and related aircraft and ground support systems interfaces. “The SkyHook HLV technology is like nothing that has ever existed. We anticipate that the operational capability of this aircraft will allow SkyHook’s customers to radically change the way they resupply and operate in remote regions, especially the north,” said Rob Mayfield, director of SkyHook. “In the oil and gas industry, there are significant pressures on cost, speed, safety, and environmental impact, and the SkyHook HLV represents solutions to each of these challenges in various applications.” SkyHook is designed to carry 80,000-pound (40-ton) sling loads up to 200 nautical miles without refueling -- a capability that is not currently available, but is desired by several industries, including oil exploration and mining operations in

the Canadian Arctic and Alaska, as well as companies operating in remote locations in South America, Europe and Africa. Boeing is designing and will fabricate a production SkyHook HLV prototype at its Rotorcraft Systems facility in Ridley Park, Pa. The new aircraft will enter commercial service after it is certified by Transport Canada and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

ESCO Expands in Australia and New Zealand Through Two AcquisitionsESCO Corporation, a leading global provider of wear-parts and attachments for the mining and construction industries, announced mid-December the acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of Austcast Pty Ltd in Brisbane, Australia, and its subsidiary Newlcast in Dunedin, New Zealand. The acquisition of these two foundries strengthens ESCO’s product offerings and expansion efforts in Australia by providing local foundry capacity. “In recent months, ESCO Corporation has made significant investments in Australia to directly support a growing number of mining and construction customers in the region,” said Cal Collins, President of Engineered Products for ESCO Corporation. “Our acquisition of Austcast is a key development in ESCO’s plan to establish a national sales, supply chain, and manufacturing network in Australia, and will further our efforts to deliver quality, value and speed to our customers on a global scale.” Austcast manufactures high-integrity steel castings for the rail, mining and industrial industries, providing a wide range of steels and specialized alloys. Doing business as ESCO, the company will continue to manufacture rail products, and will adjust its operations in 2011 to include ESCO’s industry- leading Ground Engaging Tools (GET) and other mining and construction wear parts. With the formal closing of the acquisition, ESCO also welcomes approximately 100 new Austcast and Newlcast employees to its workforce of nearly 4,700 globally.

This purchase follows ESCO’s July, 2010 acquisition of Swift Group with offices and facilities in Brisbane, Mackay and Kingaroy, and according to Collins, “demonstrates ESCO’s firm commitment to the Australian market and local manufacturing, contrary to other companies which are moving manufacturing out of Australia.” ESCO currently sells crusher wear-parts, bi-metallic buttons and blocks, Ultralok® tooth systems and SEBBA truck bodies in Australia. The majority of ESCO’s other products are distributed in Australia through Bradken Limited under a license agreement which will expire in June, 2011. Upon expiration of the license agreement, ESCO will directly supply the Australian market with its complete line of GET, wear parts, buckets, and attachments – including ESCO’s ProfillTM dragline buckets, as well as the SV2TM and Posilok® Plus tooth systems.

Dawes Rigging & Crane Hoists a Few Thousand Pounds at Miller ParkThere are 12 ounces in a bottle of Miller Genuine Draft. And 15,000 pounds in the Miller Park stadium sign. Guess which one recently

needed the services of a crane to lift it? During this off season at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, a complete overhaul of its video scoreboard system has begun, starting with the removal of the familiar Miller Park sign that’s been in place since the original opening day, April 6, 2001. The $10 million project began on October 14, 2010, when a crane from Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental of Milwaukee lifted the 15,000-pound, 15 x 75-foot sign and its 17,000-pound steel framing from its place above the current scoreboard to make room for a new state-of-the-art scoreboard system that will include a built-in Miller Park sign. Dawes, with four locations in Wisconsin, is a member of the ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. Family of Companies based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Miller Park project is being overseen by general contactor Mortenson Construction, with J.P. Cullen & Sons performed the installation and rigging. The LiftDawes’ Grove GMK 6350 all terrain crane (capacity 350 tons) was positioned in a parking lot outside the stadium for what is known as a “blind pick,” meaning the crane operator could not see the lift spot over the stadium structure. The crane, outfitted with a 196-foot boom and 62-foot jib, had to clear the 140-foot-tall center field roof of the stadium and reach 50 feet inside to the lift area, relying on riggers and the signalperson/flagger to guide the pick. The Dawes team successfully engineered the lift using the web-based 3-D Lift Plan application. The blind pick could have been a problem, but Dawes provided the right crane for the job and an expert operator. “It’s another example of how we make projects easier for contractors and help make them more productive,” says Kirk Williams, Dawes sales representative on the project. The new 6,000-square-foot scoreboard system in center field will become the third-largest video board in the major leagues … and a home run over the center field wall for Dawes.

[MONEY FOCUS]

As 2010 came to a close Congress became a beehive of activity as the House and Senate rushed to pass last minute legislation that had not been completed in the months leading up to the November election. Having been voted out of control in the House, the Democrats held on to a slim majority in the Senate and took necessary steps to pass what legislation they could before the Christmas recess. The lame duck session proved productive as HR4853, “TheTax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010” which, among other things, extended the Bush era tax rates for individuals and expanded the accelerated depreciation rules for business. Among the provisions for individuals the Act kept the lower individual tax rates enacted under the Bush administration for another two tax years. The maximum tax rates on long term capital gains would remain at 15%. The maximum tax rate on estates, otherwise known as the ‘death tax,’ would be capped at 35% with an exemption from taxes for all estates valued at $5 million and below. For businesses one of the biggest provisions of the Act was the increase in Bonus Depreciation for the first year. Commonly referred to as Section 179 depreciation the Act increased to $500,000 the amount of depreciation that taxpayers may deduct in the first year for tax years beginning in 2010 and 2011. Section 179 Depreciation has been around for a long time but this new provision doubles the amount of additional depreciation that taxpayers may elect to write off in the first year. This legislation, passed in mid-December, came too late to stimulate much economic activity but was made retroactive to apply to all depreciable assets acquired from the first of 2010. The Treasury

Department projects that the 100% write-off could generate more than $50 Billion in equipment investment in 2011. Unlike deductions that must be paid, or accrued, in the year expensed depreciation decisions may be deferred up until the time that the tax return is filed (some decisions can even be deferred longer than that for those facing the possibility of filing amended tax returns.) The Section 179 deduction is an election that the taxpayer makes at return preparation time. It is not required but is at the discretion of the taxpayer up to a specific maximum amount – after which it is phased out. Some questions taxpayers may ask when considering whether or not to take the Section 179 Depreciation deduction include: are the current tax rates going to stay the same or are they truly temporary? Will the new congress make the rates, and depreciation, permanent? The current federal tax rates, and the additional Section 179 Deduction, are both set to expire at the end of 2012. After that year the maximum individual tax rates will go from 35% to almost 40% and the maximum Section 179 deduction returns to $250,000. In years past tax planning meant that tax professionals would focus on maximizing deductions in the current year thus deferring taxes until later years when, in theory, earnings and rates would be lower. Today tax policy is a matter of political expediency as opposed to economic necessity. Accordingly, taxpayers and their preparers have to consider more than the long term economic impact of decisions they make. In other words, in order for tax planners to be effective they have to be one part tax expert, one part actuary, one part mind reader and one part riverboat gambler.y

Oregon wind farm gets $1.3B loan guarantee from Energy Department The Department of Energy has finalized a $1.3 billion loan guarantee to help finance the Caithness Shepherds Flat project, an 845-megawatt wind generation facility in eastern Oregon sponsored by Caithness Energy, LLC and GE Energy Financial Services. The loan is funded by a group of 26 institutional investors and commercial banks led by Citigroup Inc, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd, and RBS Securities. The $2 billion Shepherds Flat project, being developed by independent power producer Caithness Energy, will span some 30 square miles (78 sq km) and have the

capacity to generate 845 megawatts of electricity. That is enough to meet the needs of 235,000 typical homes in California, where most of the power generated will be sold. The Shepherds Flat wind farm will supply energy to Southern California Edison, a unit of Edison International. Earlier this month, General Electric Co had won a $1.4 billion contract from energy producer Caithness Energy LLC to supply wind turbines for what will eventually be the world’s biggest wind farm.

Today only two of the founders of North American Crane Bureau, Inc. remain involved on a daily basis, both Joe Crispell and myself have nurtured and watched, as our employees have given NACB name recognition and a reputation which far exceeds any dreams and goals which we might have considered 25 years ago. I would like to give my personal thanks to all of our dedicated clients, employees (past and present), as well as, our families who stuck by us through thick and thin. I pray that NACB and its employees will continue to grow and prosper for many years to come.”

AEM Predicts Modest Upticks in Business Through 2013In the just-released construction equipment “business outlook” survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM):• Construction machinery manufacturers

predict overall business in the United States to close out 2010 with 6.4-percent growth, then gain 12.7 percent in 2011 and 14.8 percent in 2012, followed by 2013 growth of 13.0 percent.

60 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2011 WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE

• Canadian business overall is expected to be 8.2 percent higher in 2010 than the previous year, and record gains of 12.0 percent in 2011, 14.8 percent in 2012 and 12.7 percent in 2013.

• Industry business to the rest of the world is anticipated to be strongest in 2010 – up by 14.7 percent – and then grow 11.8 percent in 2011, 12.5 percent in 2012 and 11.2 percent in 2013.

“While this rebound is welcome, you have to remember our industry was down 30 to 50 percent in the recession, so there is a long way to go. Although business is improving, it will take years to recover the sales losses of 2008-2009,” stated AEM President Dennis Slater. “This hopeful outlook will be difficult to achieve without action now on transportation infrastructure legislation and export-promotion policies. Infrastructure investment and export agreements are proven ways to create and maintain jobs for U.S. workers, for a sustainable recovery and meaningful uptick in equipment demand,” Slater said. AEM is the North American-based international trade group representing the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. Each business-activity forecast is the average of responses from manufacturers in each product line, predicting industry-wide expectations rather than individual company performance, and unit sales rather than company profitability. Samson’s Synthetic ETOP Vulcan has Excellent ResultsSamson has launched a new synthetic emergency tow-off pendant called Vulcan. Vulcan is a core-dependant, jacketed rope that uses Samson’s patented heat-resistant rope technology specifically developed for the ETOP application. Emergency tow-off pendants (ETOPs) provide a means of towing a ship away from the dock in the event of a fire. Vulcan has been under trial on the U.S. West Coast and the results so far have been excellent. Vulcan is made of 100% Technora and is enhanced with a proprietary heat-resistant coating, which is applied to the strength-member core. Samthane coating is also applied to the jacket to provide protection against abrasion, ingress of foreign material, and damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. Prior to heat exposure Vulcan’s new rope breaking strength meets or exceeds the industry standards. Required by most if not all ship terminals, the ETOP is positioned along side the vessel and monitored in order to maintain a specific distance from the water. Adjustments are made to the ETOP as the ship’s ballast changes during the loading and offloading of cargo. Wire rope has traditionally been used in this application, though steel-wire ETOPs have proven problematic. “ETOPs are rarely used for their intended

purpose,” says Craig Kelly, director of international sales for Samson. “However, crewmembers must continually handle them when coming into terminals and for training exercises. Handling heavy wire ropes is difficult, cumbersome, and can cause a number of physical injuries. Vulcan is 60–70% lighter when compared with wire rope, which significantly reduces the various mooring-related injuries associated with handling wire rope in this application.” Over the last several months, field trials have been conducted on the U.S. West Coast with excellent results. “We really like the Vulcan ETOP,” says Captain Pete Hall of OSG. “Two people can easily move it around the deck and over the longitudinal’s. One person can deploy and if needed one person can retrieve. The line is flexible and light, and the length with eyes on both ends means no more figure eighting on the bits. Plus, there’s plenty of line for a tug to work with.” Vulcan is another synthetic solution from Samson designed to enhance the safety of crewmembers while meeting the needs of demanding commercial marine applications

adaptation and adhesion to federally mandated quality tracking procedures. Suncor sought these qualifications to expand their current offerings to the highest quality rated products. When asked about the benefits of this qualification, Engineering Manager, Jim Storrer, said “As the airline and defense industries start coming out of this recession and begin to expand again, Suncor will be poised to take advantage of their immediate needs. There will always be a need for superior quality suppliers.” In addition, meeting these requirements, Storrer says “has raised Suncor’s already high standard of quality.” These twenty two qualified stainless steel swage components that are now listed in QPL-781 are left hand and right hand thread Swage Aircraft Studs (MS21259), Swage Aircraft Eyes (MS20668), Swage Aircraft Jaws (MS20667) and Single Shank Balls (MS20664), with sizes ranging from 1/16” to 3/8”. Nineteen additional swage terminals and sizes are currently pending. Suncor has plans to expand their wire rope shop to incorporate a large test bed to allow

for the testing of long wire rope assemblies per MIL-DTL-6117. Suncor Stainless has a network of dealers throughout the United States that offer these terminals and other quality stainless steel hardware. They work extensively with many government and military branches through their dealer network. For Government inquiries, please call (508) 732-1007 (CAGE Code 1CXX6). INTRODUCING THE PATENT PENDING CAPTIVATED SHACKLE WITH RFID CAPABILITIESThe patent-pending VIC LOK domestic shackle is used for permanent applications specifically designed and manufactured to be fabricated onto the end of single leg, two-leg, three-leg and four leg slings. These shackles range in size from ½" to 1-1/4" and the strongest and most modern shackles on the world market today. The engineering and metallurgical make-up of the VIC LOK shackle is formulated with durability and salt water intrusion in mind, the two most common factors that determine the lifespan of any shackle. The unique feature of the VIC LOK shackle is that the shackle cannot be removed from the sling. This prevents losing the shackle and prevents replacing it with another possible undersized or damaged shackle. In addition, a special zinc coating applied to the VIC LOK family of shackles will last longer than any galvanizing process or any other coating available. This patent-pending family of modern shackles will set the trend for companies who have equipment with single or multiple lifting points on their equipment, where a sling set is needed for transportation purposes. The VIC LOK shackle has a 5-1 safety factor and exceeds all OSHA, ASME, ANSI, and API federal regulations. The family of high-tech shackles will consist of markings including: manufacturer’s name, traceability code, RFID capabilities, size, working load limit, patent pending marking, and a specialized flat area designed for custom stamping purposes. All shackles have certificates of witness from DNV and ABS federal quality institutions. The shackle also has a feature very important to the diving industry, which will make it the most ROV friendly shackle on the market today. The owner of Integricert, Vic Segura, designed this shackle to help companies have a safer, stronger, more modern shackle to use in all lifting applications worldwide. The VIC LOK shackle is manufactured in the USA and has already been approved by many oilfield service companies as well as the major oil companies. y

FSE Robline presents ORGANIC- Innovative RopesIn recent years, the Teufelberger Group – world market leader for pleasure marine ropes – won several prizes for projects promoting environmental protection, for example, the Energy Globe and the klima:aktiv award. The sustainability concept is firmly embedded in the values

of the group. It is therefore only logical that FSE Robline – a trademark of Teufelberger – now launches, for the first time, marine ropes made of renewable and biodegradable fibers (PLA yarn and ECO-Xtrem Light Fiber): ORGANICTM – Innovative Ropes by FSE Robline. FSE Robline has successfully been using recycled materials for its packaging over the past years. Consistent with these efforts, it now also focuses on product-integrated environmental protection with regard to its ropes. Intensive research and a huge number of tests have paid off, allowing the rope specialist to launch the first-ever high-tech ORGANICTM rope in the market. The new ORGANICTM ropes are made out of renewable raw materials. Under industrial circumstances they are biodegradable, too. They do not pollute the environment, and – at the end of their life span – they close the natural resource cycle.
