Made in the UK, the Powerlite range of High Torque Starter Motors and Performance Dynamos

is a revolution in the supply of rotating electrics. All units have been designed as a direct, enhanced

replacement for the original part, or as a custom fit unit for a new engine design. They have been designed,

tested and installed in the application therefore ensuring that all units fit the application they are listed for. All Powerlite

products are produced in the UK, by auto electricians who have an extensive knowledge of British Classic Cars.

The basic concept of the PowerLite range is to substitute an out-dated, low output heavy unit, or one that cannot cope with

extra power required to start a modern engine, with one that is lighter, more powerful, more reliable and easier to fit.

Introducing theStarter Motors, Alternators &DynamoRange for Classic British CarsHigh Torque Starter Motors• Starts engine regardless of temperature or compression• Up to 50% more powerful - 50% lighter• Easier to fit

Performance “Dynalites”• Charges across all rev ranges.• Up to 50% more powerful - 50% lighter• Designed to look like the original Lucas Dynamo• Full range of British Classic Starter Motors, Alternators and Dynamos, including Lucas C40, C40L, “Dynalites”. C42 and C45 on request.

Exclusively from Powerlite – C45 Dynalite available on request with old core in positive earth! The PowerLite range fits neatly into Cooldrive’s current product portfolio, both complementing their extensive range of rotating electrics and sitting alongside the Vintage Air range of Performance Air Conditioning.

After running a pretty but terrifying Sunbeam Tiger in Group Sb for three years, Ross Jackson bought his 1972

DeTomaso Pantera in 2002 from well known racer Max Hooper, who had imported it from the USA. Having always loved Ford V8s (Ross ran an XW GTHO Falcon in Grand Prix Rallies for over a decade before stepping up to historic circuit racing) the 351 Cleveland engined Pantera was a dream car for Ross. He still has his 1972 edition of “World`s Fastest Sports Cars”, which he bought as an 11 year old, and which featured the Pantera. Although their 70’s Italian build quality left something to be desired (Elvis

famously shot his when it refused to start) the Pantera’s combination of 5 speed ZF transaxle, mid mounted V8 and timeless Tom Tjaada design has been increasingly appreciated in recent years. Ross was the first to develop one for Australian Group S racing. Now there are three running in Victoria alone. This car has been running consistently in Group S for the past 8 years and has numerous class wins at circuits, hillclimbs and sprints to its credit. It has won outright at Historic Sandown and Ross won both the VHRR Championship and the Lou Molina Trophy with this beautiful coupe in 2006.

This production-based 935 race car is especially suited for endurance races. Following a break of five years, Porsche

wins the Manufacturers’ World Championship again in 1976. At the premiere in Mugello, Jacky

Ickx and Jochen Mass drive to an overall victory in this coupe with its conspicuously flat front and adjustable rear wing. Many factory and private drivers celebrate subsequent successes with the 935, as well.

My Sunbeam Alpine is a 1964 Series IV GT which I purchased 15 years ago, I believe it has had 3 previous owners and

was once destined to be placed into a museum. I originally purchased the vehicle to build up as a race car but decided to enjoy it as a road car first. It was such a fun car that I couldn’t bring myself

to making it into an out an out race car. The next best thing was to drive it to events and compete in Regularities and Sprints just like in the old days and in true clubman spirit. In the last 2 years I have driven to and competed in 28 events and enjoy every chance I get to run on a race track. Michael Ban

My De Tomaso Pantera (usually raced under no 27 (sometimes 26) was imported into Australia in 2004. It is a rare Euro GTS

model and was delivered to an owner in Italy in 1973.My vehicle has all the original registration papers and details of the four owners - 2 Italians and two Americans. It was imported into the USA in 1978.With its last owner it was raced in a number of City

to City speed events which are a type of tarmac challenges. The recorded top speed in one section of this California event was 162 mph!I have raced it in Australia since it was imported in 2004. Like all European/American cars it is a left hand drive vehicle. It is not as heavily developed as Ross Jacksons or Perry Spirides’ cars, but we will get there. Colin Fulton

Three of these cars were built for the new 1500cc Formula for the 1926 season. They have supercharged 1500cc

twin cam engines and produced 145 bhp at 6500rpm. The engine is a straight 8, with a cast crankcase and 4 blocks of 2 cylinders fabricated from steel. There are a total of 47 bearings in the engine, either needle roller or ball race.

The Team first raced at Brooklands in the 1926 G.P. de Europe driven by Seagrave, Divo and Moriceau. Divo finishing third. Three weeks later the Team finished 1,2,3 in the Brooklands 200 mile race. During 1927 the cars were driven by Materassi who by now was the Team owner, Count Brilli-Peri, Luigi Arcangeli and Tazio Nuvolari.

1928 was a tragic year. At Monza, Materassi, while in 4th place was involved in an accident, the car left the road, Materassi and 20 spectators were killed. During the 1929 season Count

Brilli-Peri was killed at Tripoli in one of the cars. The Team was sold in 1929 to Italian Enrico “Gigi” Plate.

Chassis No 3 was laid up over WW2 by George Radford in whose hands the car ran in the first race meeting in England after the war at Grandsen Lodge in 1947. Jack Day purchased the car and brought it to Melbourne in 1948. Over a period of years the car competed regularly in Australia driven by Jack Day, Cec Warren, & Reg Nutt.

In 1988 Stuart Anderson purchased the car and set about a long, complicated and expensive restoration. The car then reappeared at the Phillip Island in 2009 and is testament to Stuart’s perseverance over the last 20 years. Recently Stuart sold the car to it’s new owner Dr Neil Cunningham who has it here this weekend.

Kim Shearn purchased the Lotus just over two years ago and raced it in South Africa during the Formula Junior Jubilee

Worldwide Series last year. He also took the car to NZ this year for the Bruce Mclaren Festival and again raced against the Internationals. With the Lotus, Kim won the Australian FJ trophy in 2008 and was runner up in 2009. Last year Kim also managed to win the NSW Group M Racing points score championship outright, despite being in only a 1100 cc car.

Kim is now a regular competitor in the Lotus at all historic meetings around Australia and is enjoying his return to racing after a 30 year lay-off! Formerly, he completed only one season of Formula Ford in 1976.

Now, Kim has been well bitten by the historic racing bug. He enthuses to all about the great friendships to be made and fantastic racing provided by the “little” FJ’s which, whilst with only moderate power, are superb handling cars and really entertaining to drive.

Cooper T70 – Adam BerrymanProvenance - a record of ownership of a work of art or an antique, used as a

guide to authenticity or quality.

Of every car here at Winton this weekend, each one carries a certain provenance. Some may have started life as an everyday road car or even set out to bring home the shopping. Others may have had a sporting history plus there are of course many that have not seen a road, other than a racing circuit.

Perhaps falling more into latter category, more so than others over this weekend would be the Cooper T70 of Adam Berryman.

It goes back to the heady days prior to the start of the 2 ½ litre Tasman Series where it was drivers from the Northern Hemisphere to head south to escape winters while driving throughout the southern summer. In 1963 New Zealand and Australian race organisers devised a formal race series to take place in both countries. The Series was devised for open wheelers with a maximum engine capacity of 2 ½ litres.

Named the Tasman Series it not only caught the imagination of enthusiasts, but prominent drivers as well. One such driver was Kiwi Bruce McLaren who at the time was driving for Cooper.

McLaren not only wanted to run in the Series, but had his heart set on winning the 1964 NZ Grand Prix.

Unfortunately ‘Old Man’ Charles Cooper frankly wasn’t doing anything special for a series in the far off antipodes. Luckily John Cooper was able to convince his father otherwise and McLaren and his mechanic Wal Willmot were given the okay to build a car using Cooper’s tool and jigs.

The result was that not only did McLaren establish Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd., but also constructed a new single seater with a narrow semi-monocoque chassis that incorporated stressed-steel steel panelling brazed on to the four cockpit steel tubes. As Cooper equipment and components were used it was called a Cooper and given the number T70.

Two cars were built for the 1964 Tasman Series and McLaren did go on to win 3 of the 4 races in NZ including the NZGP and finished in 2nd place twice in Australia plus a third. However tragedy did strike the team when American Timmy Mayer driving the second T70 crashed and was killed at the Longford, Tasmania round. McLaren was easily the winner of the 1964 Tasman Series.

The car was returned to the UK where its number was swapped with the crashed car and returned to Australia for the 1965 Tasman driven by Phil Hill. After, it was sold to Bill Patterson and eventually found its way to Western Australia. It was purchased by Richard Berryman in 1974 and passed on to his son Adam in 1985. While still in amazing original condition Adam decided to restore the car and this was completed in 2010 for its debut run appropriately in the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing.

As said it is a car with amazing provenance and we are fortunate that Adam Berryman has entered it here at Winton.

This was the fifth of over 400 Couriers produced and gained fame as the 1958 Road Test Car - featuring in many

magazines and newspapers. Unfortunately it then suffered an accident and was re-bodied at the factory as a Mark 2, before starting a second racing career in 1960 with events including the 1960 T.T at Goodwood and Snetterton races.

Ian McDonald imported the car in 1987 and restored it before racing it successfully in Lb Category events( Sa) It has now ended up back in the McDonald stable. It’s interesting that the car’s “date of birth”, 1958, was also the first year of serious racing for it’s owner, having raced at Phillip Island in 1958. Ian Mcdonald Elva Courier Mark 2

What started out as the family “hack” in the early 70’s has slowly morphed over time and budget

availability into a reasonable mid-pack Sb race car. Its first “proper” outing was in the early 90’s at the now defunct Amaroo but since that time

a good many racing miles have been added to the original mileage which now totals around the 170,000 mark. Still some more development to go as time and dollars permit; but it’s all been great fun and one of those “bucket” activities. Kent Brown 1967 MGB

The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in Victoria, and where possible assist with its growth

throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held though-out the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by.

The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.

Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings, the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year.

Added to the racing is the possibility to holiday in world class resorts around Australia, either before or after the events. Another incentive for visiting the race at Phillip Island early in the year, is that the Australian Grand Prix (the first GP race of the season) is held a week or so later. What an opportunity! Come and see world class racing, Historic and modern at two of the best circuits in the world.

It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the vicarious pleasures of historic racing.

The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars.

At race meetings you might see open wheeled racing cars, flashy racing sports cars. Formula Ford, Formula Junior, Touring Cars from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Some of the cars are driven by well-known racing identities still keeping their hand in. A world champion might even make an appearance!

So whether you race, or just want to watch, the VHRR has full race meetings, hill climbs or speed events to cater for you.
