The world’s first winter tyre from 1934.
The world’s first winter tyre, the “Kelirengas” (Weather tyre) that
was developed and manufactured by Nokian Tyres, was born in
1934. The predecessor of the famed Hakkapeliitta was designed
for use on trucks on snowy roads that were rarely ploughed. The
strong grooves of the tread gripped the snowy road and made
snow chains unnecessary, since, as it was stated in the advertise-
ment, “braking is more effective – corners and turns can be taken
without sliding”.
Inspired by the Kelirengas, the Hakkapeliitta winter tyre was
developed for passenger cars that, like the trucks, also encounte-
red problems in the slippery road conditions. The first version was
called the “Lumi-Hakkapeliitta” (Snow Hakkapeliitta).
The tyre’s tread pattern was a completely new design, as the
grooves were completely transverse and ensured tooth-like grip
and contact with the soft snow and mud. The suction cups on the
tread surface, which prevented slipping in the icy grooves, were
a typical feature of the Hakkapeliittas.
The invention of the stud, or metallic skid stopper, was a signi-
ficant leap ahead in the development of winter tyres.
The first winter tyre that was specially designed for studding was
the “Kometa-Hakkapeliitta” in 1961. Studded winter tyres made
their final breakthrough into the collective consciousness of driv-
ers in 1963, when all of the podium finishers in the Monte Carlo
Rally used studded Hakkapeliitta tyres.

At the grip limits.
Relentless testing at the extremes and finding the limits is
also a part of the development process for the world’s best
winter tyres. In March 2013, we achieved a fantastic world re-
cord for the fastest car on ice, as our test driver Janne Laitinen
achieved a speed of 335.713 km/h (208.602 mph) on the
ice of the Gulf of Bothnia. The car traveled over 93 metres
per second on the uneven ice track, and the studs hit the ice
43 times per second. Grip and speed like never before were
guaranteed by the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tyre.
Nokian Tyres and Laitinen, who has worked as a tyre tes-
ting professional for over twenty-five years, also hold the ear-
lier Guinness World Record for driving on ice ( 331.61 km/h,
206.05 mph ), and the record for driving on ice with an electric
car (252.06 km/h, 156.62 mph).

Nokian WR A3, optimised for more efficient cars, also guarantees precise and sensitive driving at higher speeds. The Nanobase structure of Nokian WR A3 improves the tyre’s steering response and control when corner-ing, changing lanes and dodging. Controlla-bility in extreme conditions is exemplary on both slippery surfaces and roads offering a firm grip. The new structure also helps to re-duce the tyre’s harmful heat emission, which in turn means a lower rolling resistance.

Nanobase
A special Nanobase support layer is used at the bottom of the
multi-layer tread structure. The smaller molecular structure
enabled by nanotechnology improves the tyre’s steering
properties and ensures exemplary control when driving in

Nokian WR D3, designed for the variable win-ter conditions of Central Europe, is a sound choice for small and mid-sized family cars and for motorists who value economical and safe driving. Preventing slush planing was a key consideration in the design process: the slanting, staggered front edge of the tread blocks flings water and slush away from the tyre grooves. The tyre’s Cool Touch Design siping minimises the friction and heat emis-sion caused by unnecessary sipe movement. A lighter rolling tyre means lower fuel con-sumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Slush Blower
The slanting, staggered front edge of the block enhances
wet and ice grip. The Slush Blower blows water and slush
away from the tyre grooves.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 will safely tackle even the trickiest winter conditions. The handling characteristics of the tyre that has ultra-light and comfortable rolling were fine-tuned using a new-generation rubber compound, a tailored tread model, and the Nokian Cryo Crystal Concept that boosts optimal lateral and longitudinal grip. Eco-friendly grip particles that have the appearance of a multi-edged crystal have been added to the rubber compound in order to improve grip on ice by grabbing onto the driving surface.

Starting in November 2012, the European Union introduced a new EU tyre labelling. The EU tyre label will help consumers compare tyres in terms of fuel economy, wet grip, and external rolling noise.
The new tyre label applies to tyres for passenger cars, 4x4s, vans, trucks, andbuses that are manufactured after 1 July 2012 and that are approved for roaduse. The label does not apply to studded tyres.

Winter conditions not taken into account
The classification is based on Central European conditions,
including tyre grip on a wet surface. For now, the new
tyre label does not take into account grip on ice, which
is essential for winter tyres and real winter conditions. As
regards winter tyres, studded tyres have been left com-
pletely out of the classification.
The selection of a tyre is a sum of many components
Although the new EU tyre label makes it easier to compare
different tyres and provide consumers with useful informa-
tion, there are a number of other properties, in addition to
the three classification criteria, that affect safe driving and
are valued by drivers.
These properties include:

• Ability to withstand aquaplaning
• Durability and wear
