WRESTLING The Outlook
The makings of an outstanding team are there for Northern Iowa but the schedule could get in the way.
The Panthers have solid, proven performers back at five positions, a returning national champion in heavyweight Kent Osboe (who returned in the best condition ever at a slim svelte 235 pounds on his 6-5 frame} and the best quality depth in years.
And, ii coach Chuck Paitten is smiling it's not over the schedule, which he considers the finest in many a UNI moon, but the fact there are only TWO seniors on the squad .. . Osboe and Guyer.
The strong spots, to start off, are at 130, 137, 160, 167 and heavyweight. The lighter classes remain a question mark until proven with great promise at 152 and 177.
Now, the schedule. UNI has 24 duals slated, but only five home da tes and that includes the UNI Invitational. There are two and three day tests (six matches in one three day venture into North Dakota and Minnesota} and the likes of Michigan State, Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin and Mankato State on the docket along with NCC power South Dakota Sta te. And they take on the 24 opponents in a two month period.
Why? Patten says, " We need to improve our competition to improve a s w restlers a n d prospective coaches. It may not mean we'll match las t y ear· s re cord number of wins ( 17} , b ut we' ll be more aggressive."
The p rospects? UNI w ill likely b e favored to win its third s traight NCC title, should be better p repared fo r a s howing in the national tournaments wih Osboe, Guyer and Reiland the best pre-season bets for national honors.
A possible key? "This team is coming back with the fines t attitude I've e,ver seen," said Patten. "And I rate, Osboe and Guyer as one of the top 10 in the nation in their respective weights."
Head Coach Chuck Patten

On any given year the fact that the coach has four starters and nine lettermen from a team that missed the conference title by a single game would add up to title dreams . .
UNI basketball coach Zeke Hogeland is not C"sting those dreams off but there remains one hard factthree other teams are re,turning ju~t a s much firep ower as the Panthers.
Hogeland did a remarkable job in his first year, posting a 15-7 record with a sophomore dominated team that had but two seniors and a brand ne'w offensive system.
He starts this year with a veteran team that knows that system. It looks like this :
The Minuses: No one loses a Jerry Waugh (single season a'nd single game record holder) without missing him, but Hogeland sees this as a plus in one way : "We looked loo much to Waugh in the crisis last year. We'll be more of a five-man unit this year . I'll take a different hero every night."
The pluses: The four starters-two-time all-NCC center Ken Huelman (6-8); forwa.rds Skip Ander5on (6-5) and John Martin (6-6) and guard Darrell Jesse (5-11 ). Rod L:i.rson (6- G) is the most improved player on hand and is likely replacement for Waugh . Larry Clausen (5-11) could put two-year sta.rter Jesse on the bench. Solid reserves in Larry Lust (6-2), Bill Van Zante (6-4). Brightest sophomores are Duane Jensen (6-2) and Pete Wessels ( 6-0), both guards.
The Key: Huelman could be the key . He's within range of the all-time scoring record of 1,239 (he's got 761 l. A great year by Huelma,n could ma ke this a championship team. The rebounding will be stronge,r with Larsen on the court, the speed better with Clausen on hand.
The Race : Defending champion South Dakota State, UNI, North Dakota U., South Dakota U. all tough, Augusnata the best bet as a sleeper .

The Outlook A solid veteran indoor track team, losing only thre·e
men from last year's championship team, will be gunning for a third straight NCC indoor title and it could be the best team in UNI history.
Coach Jack Jennett has only two problems.
First, he must get a long without e ight men, active in other winter sports, for a major portion of the campaign and, . secondly, he must find a replacement for the talented Mark Sanborn.
"'The eight men in other sports robs us of depth for they all fall into three events-pole vault , high jump and shot put," said Jennett. "Also, I don't think any one man can replace Sanborn. It'll ta ke two or three to do what he did for us."
There is no doubt who the super staT on this year's team is . Its Larry McCree dy, the all-time scoring champ in Panther land, an All-American hurdler last year, the mos t versatile performer in UNI his toy.
UNI is again loaded in t he hurdles with eight men on hand, have an outstanding long a·nd triple jumpe:r in Craig Fay, stronge r in the sprints, the pole vault, high jump, and shot put. The weakest spot . . the distance where ve terans Tom Denney and Wayne CarpenteT hold the best chance for points. Larry Daniels g ives UNI good strength in the 440-600 and 880 events with help from a form e r Waterloo West teammate Dan Gates in the 440.
Despite the huge returning forc e Jennett m a1y have the hottest freshman group he 's recruited with at least eight rif them considered sure bets for starting ro les .
The Panthers have won the last two indoor and outdoor NCC titles a nd will likely be favored to repeat.

The Outlook
Depth, a rare comm::idity for the first two years in UNI swimming, is showing its face, much to the delight of coach Glen Henry.
"That first year w e couldn' t e ven put a man in the water in a couple of events and even last year we threw in some just to have a second man in the race," he said. "Now , we have a light for the chance to swim. We were better the first day of practice than we were at the end of last year."
UNI's power lies in the middle free style events where 1967-68 point leader Eric Hyde may have trouble holding on to his numbe r one status. Newcomer Brian Griffith is the challenger in both the 100 and 200 events. They also form a strong nucleous in the' relays.
The backstroke event is better, the breaststroke improved a nd there is a brand new look in the butte·rfly. UNI finally has one ... in fact . .. two, in Les Mangold and Rick Shaver, Mangold finished sixth in the sta te prep meet last year.
Henry is three strong in the individual medley, headed by freshman Jim Moneypenny and vete ran Tom Loeck with Rolland Guild a strong threa t to take one spot.
UNI needs help in three areas ... the freestyle sprint and distance ... and diving, though all will be improved over last year.
Henry is happy with the progress. " There is a different attitude on this squad. They want to do something with the ir team. If they keep tha t attitude we could be tough ."

GYMNASTICS
The Outlook
There is a new look in UNI gymnastics . No longer
does Garf Stych light to put a man in an event. The
light, now, is over a starting position, giving the Panthers
tl~eir brightest prospects in the short three-year history
of the sport.
A 2-7 team in 1967-68, the Panthers are looking for
better things this time around.
The biggest improvement should be in the side horse,
a weak spot the first two years . Newcomer Dennis
Wiedenman a nd veteran Clyde Hovick should be the
point leaders. The parallel bars a re improved with Ho
vick and new comer Barry Sweet the top men .
Five lettermen returned (more than the total squad
two years ago) with capt a in Keith Hicklin leading the
way. Hicklin, one of the top vaulters in the midwest,
w ill again handle all-around duties. He's joined by
Hovick, Steve Speth, Steve Rutz and Steve Lamansky.
Newcomers counted on for big things are Sweet ,
Wiedenman and Jeff Connor.
The Panthers may be in the process of turning the
corner in gymnastics . Stych thinks so. "Its a big step
for us when we have a battle for starting positions . This
competition can only make us tougher."

THE ALL-AMERICANS
KENT OSBOE-Northern Iowa has had 25 national wr estling champions over the years, but their h:as been only one Kent Osboe, the first Panther heavyweight to win a NCAA national crown. A · year a go Kent came ba,ck at 270-pounds, melted down to 235 and went to work, winning his title in the College Division nationals. This year
A he came back at 235 ready to defend that crown. He was 28-2-0
Kent Osboe last year w ith 15 pins. His career reco·rd s tands a t 38-6-0 to go w ith two NCC heavyw eight titles.
LARRY McCREADY- All-America track men at UNI have been few and far between. So few, in fact, that Larry McCready is only the second in history. He earned that title with a second place finish in the NCAA College Division nationals in the 120-yard high hurdles. He's done the distance in :13.9, but its only one of many events fo~ him. He .stars in both hurdles, the high jump, long jump and relays, anchor-
Larry McCready ing the 440 and 880 events. He' s the number one scorer of all-time at UNI w ith his senior year left to pad that brilliant reco·rd.
