Dressage training Riders seat, aids and position
In dressage, the rider uses his weight, legs and seat to influence the horse. These are known as the “aids”. In order to use the aids correctly, the rider’s body must be aligned
and balanced. From a side view, the ear, shoulder, hip and heel of the rider should in a straight line at the halt.
From the back, the rider should sit evenly on both seat bones and the length of the stirrups should be the same. By shifting his hips and his weight, the rider can ask the horse to move in different di-rections and step into different gaits. In simplest terms, the rider should have his hips do what he wants the horse’s hips to do and his shoulders do what he wants the horse’s shoulders to do.
For more specific information about the rider seat and aids, you might consider read-ing the following books available in the USDF bookstore:

CLINICS!
Gail MacCormack has been working on a number of clinics for us. Thanks, Gail!
Our first clinic will be at Serendipity Farm in Glenburn. The clinician will be Michelle Coad. Originally from Illinois, Michelle grew up for most of younger life in Waterville, Maine. She originally
started her riding with Sharon Poulin in dressage. From there, Michelle rode with some familiar names in
Maine dressage, extensively with Judy Westlake and Christine Joost.
In 1998 , Michelle continued her riding journey with Gina Krueger, a USDF Instructor, and was
hooked on her clear communication skills.
In 2009, Michelle left her job as a chemical engineer and has pursued her riding career full time working for
Gina Krueger in Georgia.
Michelle provides instruction in "classical" dressage and a term she refers to as "relationship"
dressage, adhering to the dressage training pyramid. She likes to keep the interaction between horse, rider
and instructor enjoyable as they learn.
SHOWS
We have three shows set up for next season. The June 13th Show is a Rider-Run Show and will be at Whis-
pering Pines. The judge will be Chris Joost. Our second show will be at Puckerbrush on August 8th with
Carol Poulin-Taylor judging. Bryn asked to be listed as Show Chair. She will post duties along with times
on the Puckerbrush website. Our third show will be September 19th at Stepping Stone Farms. Kris Nicola
has volunteered to be the show chair for that. She will run it as a EMDA Benefit, but it is not Rider Run.
Hooray! As we go to press, we are asking for a volunteer to chair the June show. If we have none, I will
organize that. Plan on sending the applications to me, Betsy Hudson, 322 West Broadway, Bangor, ME
04401. E-mail: [email protected]. Please call for ride times after 6:00 p.m. on June 10th.
These are Rider-Run Shows and you should expect to be assigned some show responsibility. You
may have a friend or family member perform them but, please do your part.
NEXT EMDA BOARD MEETING
The next board meeting will be held on Monday, April 5th at 322 West Broadwayt at 6:00 p.m. in
Bangor. Please call beforehand if you wish to attend, as date is subject to change. 207-942-5940
