Walking into the showroom, from any vantage point you can
see Q.E.P.’s Corporate banner (shown to the right). We had
a huge presence on the show floor with a 20’ x 40’ booth, to
emphasize our size and strength as a company.
Our theme throughout the booth this year was “(A
Masterpiece in Motion)”. This truly captures who we are as
a company-constantly adding new products, making
acquisitions and never sitting still. This theme will be
carried out throughout the year in all of our marketing
efforts.
To support this theme we employed artist Zoey Stevens to paint some
interesting portraits for two of the three days of the show. The most
interesting aspect of these paintings is that he actually painted some of them
in sections upside down!
There was a drawing held on-site to win some of the paintings, winners
chosen included Jim Sansouci from Bolick, Dennis Harrison from Southern
Wholesale and Jim Batt from CDC. They will be hanging their paintings in their
warehouses and offices with special QEP logo’s on each painting. In addition
to the paintings chosen for winners, Zoey
painted a variety of other paintings that will
now be showcased around corporate
headquarters in Boca Raton, FL. To see these
paintings (as well as a full view of the booth)
which include a portrait of Lewis Gould, our
Roberts 75th Anniversary Logo, Elvis, Marilyn
Monroe, James Dean, Frank Sinatra and
many more, visit our QEP Facebook page and

Many changes have taken place within our company and we wanted to
showcase these important focal points of our company to our customers, as
well as the industry, at Surfaces this year. In the upcoming year we will be
making changes to our QEP brand including new branding, packaging and
products as shown here to the left. One of our biggest milestones, Roberts
75th Year Anniversary is this year and we’ve launched an exclusive 75th
Anniversary logo shown atop the Roberts tower at Surfaces. Roberts also
showcased the new look of the Roberts adhesive packaging and new products
that have been added to the line. A huge focal point on the adjacent tower
was the newly redesigned, repackaged and full line of Capitol-branded
adhesives. On the backside, for the first time under the QEP Corporate
heading, the newly acquired Hisco and Ludell were showcased featuring the
full line of digging and striking tools.
Harris Wood anchored the booth this year
with three separate displays. Samples of the
new engineered wood flooring offered under
the Harris Wood brand were shown along
with revealing the two newest collections,
Aspen and Highlands. These were
prominently featured showcasing the ten new
colors available. Another first-timer for our Surfaces booth was the new extension to
the continuously growing line of Harris Wood, the renewable, sustainable and
environmentally friendly Harris Cork collection. The four Harris Cork collections; Napa,
Sonoma, Sierra and Santa Cruz feature twelve different flooring choices available to
meet the demands of the
consumers looking for a way to
stay green.
The booth, new products, new
brands, new catalogs and
revitalized branding were all very
well received by our customers and potential customers. We’re
following up on meetings held in our booth, leads of new
customers received at the show and starting our planning process
for next year already! Thank you to everyone involved in Surfaces
for truly making it one of the best tradeshows yet!

Dear Fellow Associates:
Wow! We have had a heck of a last few months. It seems like the last time we published the newsletter we gave a history
lesson. Now so much has transpired, it looks like this will be another history lesson!
We expect in the next few days to acquire a company called “Homelux” in England, who is a manufacturer and distributor of
trims, both metal and plastic, for the home improvement and ceramic tile industries. We are very excited about this
acquisition. We have targeted March 1st to make the official announcement.
In addition, the company is looking at other acquisitions wherever possible to balance our sales with our major customers
who are bringing “margin pressure” to our company as, in fact, most retailers are! We hope to have good news as we
stabilize our sales and earnings.
Your company is working through the intricacies of Obamacare. We will be affected in our rates, coverage and plans. It will
probably go into effect this August and we are doing everything we can to comply with the new regulations but to also
mitigate many of the costs flowing through. This is a very complex set of regulations that will affect everyone.
In addition, we are subject to a variety of additional regulations regarding almost anything you can imagine. In the State of
California we have to analyze our products and make sure there are no chemicals or lead which can harm people. We have
to watch our emissions in manufacturing glue and keep up with the constant state of new regulations coming out of
Washington, D.C. Obviously none of this is easy for a small company like us and it is becoming increasingly difficult to
constantly wrestle with these rules and regulations.
As we approach our year end, which is February 28th, we look forward to the new year. Your company will continue to grow
and become a more global company than we are now. There are many hidden perils in growth, whether from our lenders,
from banks, from personnel issues, etc. We are committed on a continuing basis to make sure we have a wonderful,
harmonious and profitable company for all of us!
Kindest regards,
Lewis Gould

John Dever Retires
John Dever, the AFS Branch Manager at the Gosford location, has been with us for 13 years and recently retired. Before joining our team, he was an accredited flooring installer for over 30 years. He will be missed and we all wish him well in his retirement. “John has been an absolute stalwart of the business for over a decade. He’s someone whom
management have relied on to run an autonomous and profitable regional trade centre.
Although from the "old school" John has been an example to us all through his ability to accept
changes to the business as we have tried to keep AFS current in the challenging market over
recent years. He will be missed in too many ways to mention but all of us are happy for John and
Judy and we wish them all success in their retirement.” Bruce Maclaren, QEP Australia Managing

Last month Q.E.P. Co., Inc. participated in our biggest trade show of the year, “Surfaces 2013”, in Las Vegas. “Surfaces” is
by far our largest in both attendance and order writing, but it is certainly not the only one.
“Surfaces 2013” is one of over 100 around the world that QEP will participate in this year. Many of our customers, big and
small, host their own shows. Many are regional, some are national, and a few are international.
These shows are a good opportunity for our sales and product teams to get in front of our customers. There are secondary
benefits as well: We can scout for new products and ideas, we can stay on top of both industry and societal trends, we can
hold high level meetings with key vendors, and of course, we hope to write plenty of new business as well!
There also is a significant cost associated with attending so many of these shows. The natural question is, then why do we
participate? As a truly global company it is important to keep our many brands front and center in the minds of our many
buyers.
As you can see from this issue’s cover story, our booth at Surfaces was immense. The impressiveness of the design and
layout made an enormously positive impact. My hat is tipped to those in marketing who made this booth a reality. We
presented like a billion dollar company and I cannot recount just how many compliments I received on our booth style, and
the new products inside.
So what is next for QEP on our ‘tour’ of shows? In the USA we are just hitting co-op season. This means our customers such
as Ace Hardware, Tru-Value, and Origill Brothers will all be holding national shows. All these lead up to the National
Hardware Show which is the largest mass market show. Of course there are always a slew regional shows and events.
These can be pool distributors, sundry distributors, and of course wood flooring distributors. Even our largest customer,
The Home Depot will hold a show of its own for all 2,000 of its store managers.
Internationally we will be participating in shows in the UK, China, Germany, as well as Design Build down under in Sidney,
Australia. When we come to a town near you, please come by and see us!
Best Regards,
Len Gould

Vitrex at the Totally DIY Show
QEP enjoyed another successful exhibition last month at the Totally DIY Show in Coventry, England – the most important UK industry trade show for retailers and suppliers of products in the DIY and home improvement sector. The event saw a big showcase of the Vitrex brand of tiling & flooring installation equipment, power tools and safety equipment - which have been at the forefront of the home improvement market in the UK for more than 70 years. The Vitrex booth was extremely popular with a high volume of traffic and QEP UK received a number of sales leads and many new orders as a result of our showing.

Social Media
Throughout the past few months I’ve been asked what a “twit”, “tweet” and “hashbrown” is and for numerous Twitter lessons
so I thought I’d give some insight on those “hashbrowns” or rather…#hashtags everyone is so curious about.
A hashtag is a word or phrase beginning with the symbol “#”. This symbol is used as a metadata tag which helps describe an
item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. It provides a grouping method that users can use to search for
other users content with the same hashtag.
These tags are normally chosen informally by the users and any combination of characters led by a “#” hash sign is a hashtag.
Therefore, any hashtag if promoted by individuals can “trend” and attract more individuals to use this hashtag in discussion on
the same platform. For example, on Twitter, when a hashtag becomes extremely popular, it will appear in the “Trending Topics”
area of the users homepage, this week #SpringBreak is in the Top 10 Trending Topics for hashtags.
Hashtags are not controlled by any one user or group of users and cannot be retired from public usage. They don’t contain any
set definitions and can be used for any number of purposes by those who make use of them. A variety of websites enable
hashtags and they are use similarly the same across all platforms, these platforms include Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest,
Tout, Tumblr and YouTube.
In the case of business’, hashtags are often used in marketing campaigns to file tweets to respond and interact with
followers/customers and easily search and organize within the social media platform.
Do’s and Don’ts of #hashtags:
1. It’s important to keep your tags simple and direct, don’t create a long complex hashtag.
Do: #hardwood #flooring Don’t: #Hardwoodflooring
2. Don’t weigh down your message with hashtags, 1-2 hashtags per message is acceptable. More than 3 hashtags is a
desperate marketing measure and a way to lose followers quickly.
3. Create your own hashtag to generate buzz around a marketing campaign or launching a contest.
4. Events are great opportunities for creating conversations around hashtags.
An event can be given a unique hashtag to generate content and discussion before, during and after the event.

Blake played football at the University of Central Florida (UCF) graduating in 2010 and never got his opportunity with a NFL

gave up the hope of one day playing for an NFL team. He continued to practice and workout and was given a chance
