Great Decisions Starting January 27, 2016

It’s time to reserve your space for Great Decisions 2016. With the state of world conditions, the Foreign Policy Association has not had any difficulty preparing a challenging list of issues to discuss and greatly expand your knowledge of international issues facing our nation. Our group will meet at Barnes Plantation’s conference room from 7 to 9pm for nine consecutive Wednesdays beginning January 27th and while most participants can’t attend all sessions, the knowledge gained from a single session is worth the $25 cost of materials. Keep in mind that we will have to cut off enrollment in time to order materials for a January 27, 2016 start date so don’t let the coming holiday season delay you. Your check for $25 should be mailed to Richard Applegate, 110 North Windward Drive, SSI 31522 to reserve your space. If you have questions please call Richard at 634-3359.

8:00: And now the show! Valentines show featuring Sentimental Journey - Jerry Gowen on Piano and Joan Cullen doing vocals, singing your favorite love songs from the past with a bit of fun in the mix. This is a show of nostalgic and fun memories from our youth. Cost is $53.00 each. Make checks payable to Frank Cullen and send them to me at 149 Shore Rush Drive Saint Simons Island, Ga. 31522 Again, I will need checks by January 29th. You may know Jerry Gowen from playing at Georgia Sea Grill, Marshes Edge, Sea Island, or Jekyll Island. Thinking back, you may also remember Jerry as Porter Wagoner’s pianist on TV in the 80’s, or have seen him on stage in Nashville, where he was the pianist and musical manager of Opryland for over a decade. Joan has been singing from an early age. You may have heard her sing the National Anthem at one of the Suns games in Jacksonville, at Sea Palms when they had live music in the Putters Club, or singing oldies with her Jacksonville band for various shag club conventions. Together they deliver a very sentimental journey into our musical past.

Behind the Scenes Tour of International Aid

Thursday February 25, 2016

We are pleased to announce a behind-the-scenes tour of a well-known global aid organization that is right in our own backyard! MAP International is a non-profit aid agency that tackles worldwide epidemics, natural disasters and chronic medical conditions by providing medical supplies to countries in dire need. Coasters can tour on Thursday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m.; sign-up instructions are towards the end of this article.

Founded in Illinois in 1954, MAP moved to Brunswick in 1985 with their headquarters and 40,000 square foot warehouse located near the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport. Some equipment and medicine is donated from medical facilities and pharmaceutical companies. MAP supplements donations with purchased supplies. “Boxes line the shelves with names of medicines most Americans would recognize as Sudafed, Motrin and Advil. While these may be readily available in America, remote areas of third world countries don’t have access to

Page 6: Winter Newsletter 2016 - Winter 2016 Coasters News Page 1 PO Box 24228, St. Simons Island, GA 31522 Finally it’s Winter and our First 2016 Winter Coasters News!

medication like antihistamines, ibuprofen or decongestants.” Last year the medical missions program sent more than 3,000 medical orders to more than 100 countries.

MAP also works to provide needed antibiotics to treat leprosy – a disease that has scared men, women and children dating back to Biblical times. More than 200,000 cases are reported worldwide each year, and a course of antibiotics costing $348 can cure leprosy if it is caught in the early stages! In addition to treatment, MAP also works toward prevention. A cold storage unit on the site contains supplies of vaccines for diseases like rabies, tetanus and hepatitis.

This is a walking tour, which will last about one hour. While access is not an issue, there are no good places to stop and rest, so plan accordingly and wear comfy shoes.

The cost is $5 per person to provide a donation to MAP, as well as drinks and snacks for participants. We can accommodate the first 40 people who sign up and pay the modest cost to ensure your participation. If you are interested, please send your check payable to “Coasters” to Donna Ainger, at 111 Simonton Way on St. Simons. Please be sure to include your preferred e-mail address so she can confirm receipt to the first 40 people.

Directions will be provided to those who sign up. As always, if you are successful in signing up promptly and your plans change, please let us know so someone else can take advantage of this opportunity.

Questions? E-mail Donna Ainger at [email protected]

Note: If you are also a Sandpiper, there will be an identical opportunity for them on another date also in February.
