Dear Valiants anD FrienDs:
Welcome to another exciting season of athletics at Valley Catholic High school. after 38 years at the 3a Classification level, the Valiants have jumped up to the 4a level and joined the Cowapa league. already this year, Valley Catholic is making a name for itself at the new classification level after enjoying a very successful fall athletic season that included repeat state championships in boys cross country and girls soccer.
This winter we are excited to see our student-athletes compete in basketball, swimming, and dance. at Valley Catholic, athletics play an important role in the development of a well-rounded student and provide exciting opportunities for the development of community on our campus. We are proud of our Valiants, who travel around the state representing our school community in all of the activities and sports that we offer at Valley Catholic.
While we play to win, and have enjoyed a great deal of success through the years, we strive for an even greater goal of representing the mission and charism of the sisters of st. Mary of Oregon in all that we do. We live valiantly, strive for excellence, honor the unique gifts of each person, and celebrate God and life. These four core values make up the sisters’ mission and guide our student-athletes on and off the court.
Thank you for coming out to support VC athletics. We greatly appreciate the time, energy, and dedication required by students, coaches, and parents to make it possible for these young men and women to have the opportunity to represent their school in a game they love.
enjoy the game, and GO VALIANTS!
respectfully,
Bob Weber, President Valley Catholic school

The Valley Catholic girls basketball team makes the move to 4a after a historic run at the 3a level. The girls team finished second in 2014 at the 3a level last year after winning the 2013 3a state Championship. Coach innes and the Valiants return several experienced players from their impressive performance last year, including seniors Kaylynn Bush, Bailey McDevitt and Maddie Vinson. Junior Molly Danielson returns in the post, and newcomers emily Mcleod and noelle Mannen will look to make an immediate impact in the backcourt. Petra Flemmer and rachel Justice will also provide depth and scoring for the Valiants in their up-tempo system.
The move to the 4a level and the Cowapa league will offer new rivalries for the Valiants. an early season schedule against some very tough opponents and some challenging road contests will help prepare the Valiants for the always-competitive Cowapa league.
boys vArsity bAsketbAll
The Valley Catholic boys basketball team enters the 2014-15 season in a new league and a new classification. The defending 3a state Champions are now members of the very competitive Cowapa league at the 4a level. The Valiants graduated four outstanding seniors from last year’s team, including two all-state performers. This year’s team returns five seniors and eight letter-winners, including honorable mention all-league guard Kazuma lane. lane will be looked upon to provide leadership along with fellow senior captains JD Menkens and Drew VanderZanden. VanderZanden anchors a very deep post rotation that includes seniors David Baglai and Kristof Osswald, juniors avery Jones and Joe Kiefer, sophomore Vlad Katin and freshman Ben robbins. On the perimeter, the Valiants return lane and Menkens, along with juniors shankar Krishnakumar and Vijay Parthasarathy and sophomores Joey Braun, Colin Haggerty and aidan Welsh.
The early schedule is tough for the Valiant boys team as they face defending 4a state Champion Philomath, current 5a team and last year’s 4a runner-up la salle, and also play in two challenging tournaments. The non-league schedule should prepare them for Cowapa league play. The 2014-15 season will be an exciting one, as the Valiants look to competing at the 4a level.

as a two-season sport, the dancers have been at work since september. The Charisma started the 2014-2015 season with 19 dancers, including nine returners.
The Charisma won the small contemporary dance division at the 2014 Dance and Drill Coaches association Fall Category Championships. This is the first time the Charisma has earned a fall championship. The dancers also placed third in the highly competitive small jazz division.
The dancers commenced work on their Osaa state 2015 routine, “tethered,” in november. now that fall season is over, the Charisma will be solely focused on preparing “tethered” for its winter competition debut on Jan. 31 at Canby.
With 17 teams, the 4a division is one of the most competitive for dance. The stayton Highlights have owned the title for the last 12 years and are a formidable obstacle to any team’s title hopes. Besides the Charisma, other top contenders will likely include astoria, Crook County of Prineville, Gladstone, Marshfield of Coos Bay and scappoose.
Follow the Valley Catholic Charisma Dance team Facebook page for all the latest team updates.

The Valiant swim team is back in action and experiencing exciting changes with Valley Catholic Catholic’s move to 4a. While the state competition remains the same (3a and 4a compete together at state), the team has joined the Cowapa league and will be competing for a league title, as well as district and state. With a roster of 31 (15 girls and 16 boys), this is the biggest swim team in Valley Catholic history.
after two top-10 finishes at state for the boys team (6th) and girls team (8th), the team returns almost all of their state competitors and adds new swimmers. On the girls’ side, Valley Catholic returns state competitors Hailey Moraes, Clara Cannon, tintin luu and Kathleen shew. Joining them are Marisa Jack, returning to the team after being injured last year, and sarah Krueger, a freshman who has already set one school record (500 yard freestyle) and is looking to set more as the season continues. These six, along with a great mix of talent from the senior, junior and freshman class, should make the girls team a top competitor in league, district and state. The boys follow up their best state finish in a decade, returning all but one of their state competitors. sophomore Ben settle and junior David spurgeon look to once again vie for individual state titles in their events, while Binh luu, ryan Orchard and Jacob Michel return from their state meet relays. With the talented additions, the boys team should make their presence known in their first year in the Cowapa league.
