A Message From AmyThe Village Voice

Happy 2022! I hope thateveryone enjoyed theChristmas Season andthe New Year withfamily and friends, andthat you were able totake some time toreflect and be thankfulfor all your blessings! As we embark on theNew Year, I think it isimportant to look backand evaluate oursuccesses and

related to COVID-19 and staffingchallenges, which have led to a never-before-seen expense for contract labor.

We continue to meet our challengeswith a positive attitude and a strengthfrom God which carries us through. Iam excited about the year ahead! Wewill meet new residents and staff, hostfundraising events which will bring inmuch needed funds and support, andwe will start construction on ProjectRenovare, which is the reality of adream that is 5 years in the making! Iask for your prayers as we continue ourMinistry and Mission of “Caring for OurElders with the Compassion of Christ”.It is an honor to lead this organizationand to care for the residents that weserve! I look forward to your supportthis year!

challenges from the previous year. 2021, met St.Dominic Village with both. As you see from the 2021Snapshot (located on page 3), we employed anamazing group of staff who cared for over 500residents! We were able to open the doors again toWarren Chapel, and volunteers were welcomed backto our campus. We received much needed financialsupport from our donors and foundations. Notnoted on the snapshot, but just as important, wewere able to allow open visitation back on ourcampus and bring so much joy back to ourresidents!

Most of the challenges in the last year (really the last2 years) are due to the pandemic. We saw a declinein our overall census, while at the same time wehave continued to have an increase in expenses

At the close of 2021, St Dominic Village lost a dearfriend. Bishop George Sheltz passed away onDecember 21, 2021. Bishop Sheltz was a nativeHoustonian and dedicated his life to the Lord as apriest for more than 50 years. He meant so much toso many in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.Bishop Sheltz's history with St. Dominic Village goesback to when both of his parents lived here. He oftenreflected that it was their time at SDV that developedhis dedication to this community. He lovingly servedas a Board Member and donor for many years.Despite his busy schedule, he attended almost everyevent that we hosted and served as the celebrant atcountless Masses in our Warren Chapel.

He believed in our Mission, and it wasevident in all that he did to support ourMinistry. After his retirement he choseto make his home here at St. DominicVillage, at the Archbishop FiorenzaPriest Retirement Home. He will bemissed greatly by our Board ofDirectors, staff, and residents.

St. Dominic Village hosted the 2nd Annual FallLuncheon in our campus auditorium onThursday, October 28th.The audience at thissold-out event were thrilled to welcome theGuest of Honor, Mr. Johnny Carrabba to thestage! He spoke to the crowd about “Faith, Foodand Family”, sharing many personal stories andmemories related to his successful restaurantcareer and life growing up here in Houston,Texas. Rose Carrabba, Johnny’s mother, was alsoin attendance and the two made the day a lot offun!

Each year this event highlights a resident thatlives at St. Dominic Village and lets them sharetheir story. This year Ms. Bea Cunninghamshared stories about her family, her career ineducation, as well as her experiences here at St.Dominic Village. She also spoke about the newbook that she has authored, Waiting for Jesus.

The luncheon had a raffle with some fabulousitems and one lucky guest at each table won adoor prize. Our guests had an amazing lunchthat included Mama Mandola’s Sicilian Chickensoup and Carrabba’s Cannoli’s. SDV resident,Father Fred O’ Conner opened event with aprayer and Bishop Dell’ Oro ended the lunchwith a blessing for everyone.

The luncheon was a huge success and all fundsraised directly go to our residents by supportingthe Resident Subsidy Fund, and our mission of“Caring for Our Elders with the Compassion ofChrist”.

Start by adding enough vitamin A, C andE, B6 and D, eat enough protein andfruits and vegetables that haveantioxidants.

Get sufficient sleep. Sleep is when yourbody works its hardest to combatinflammation and infections.

There is not a magical diet or supplement toboost your immune system. To ensure theimmune system is as strong as it can be,there are a few things you can put in yourlife to help.

Staying as active as you can! Drink plenty of water.

Be careful of the surfaces that you touchand always wash your hands or use atleast a 75% alcohol-based handsanitizer.

The immune system plays a big role inhelping us fend off attacks from virusesand bacteria. There is no magic pill butmaking sure you add these items willstrengthen your system.

The beginning of December saw acontinuing flow of fully vaccinated oldand new volunteers, some carolers,volunteer musicians providing classicaland Christmas music, and generally areturn to near normal. Warren Chapelwas open to everyone. Sunday Mass inthe Rehabilitation and Nursing Centerwas supported by a full complement ofvolunteers to set up, assist residents,and participate as liturgical ministers.Volunteers were committed todistributing Communion to theresidents who were unable to attendMass, and all was well in our Village.

At this time due to COVID-19, we havetemporarily made some changes to ourvolunteer program.

The wise decisions made by ouradministration to keep the residentssafe.A compassionate and caring staff.The sure and certain knowledge thatour group opportunities, both spiritualand simply social, and our faithful andfaith filled volunteers will return.

We will continue to evaluate how best toserve and keep our residents safe. We willcontinue to count our blessings; blessingsthat will endure through theses challengesand beyond.

phase of construction for Project Renovare. We started in the

Rehabilitation and Nursing Center with the updates and upgrades to the

rooms on unit one.

None of this would be possible without YOU, our faithful donors!! Your

financial support started in 2019 and paved the way for great change on

our campus.

You can still be a part of this special campus update by purchasing a

personalized brick which will forever memorialize your gift. All bricks

will be laid on the pathway leading to Warren Chapel at the completion
