THE GRENFELL TOWER FIRE: KENSINGTON ALDRIDGE ACADEMY PUPILS AT LATYMER

Wednesday 14 June 2017 is a date etched into the memories of all West Londoners. In the early hours, a catastrophic fire started in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block, killing at least 80 residents, causing over 70 injuries and destroying the entire building. Emergency services battled throughout the night and following day to save as many inhabitants as was possible, with local residents doing all they could to help.

As soon as news of this horrific event spread to the outside world, donations flooded to the area and the practicalities of how to help survivors and regain some resemblance of routine began in earnest. Having grown up in a tower block just opposite Grenfell Tower, our Head, David Goodhew, immediately reached out to the Kensington Aldridge Academy [KAA] to ask how we might help (as their school closed due to its proximity to the Tower). KAA advised that the best way we could support their evacuated students would be to offer Latymer as a base for the Lower Sixth for their final five weeks of the summer term.

Mr Goodhew told the Latymer community, “Supporting these young people by offering some sort of continuity to their education and a daily school routine is something we are uniquely placed to do.”

Having arrived on 19 June, the KAA pupils settled in quickly; friendships were forged across both schools and a triumphant KAA/Latymer joint girls’ team beat St Paul’s Girls decisively in a netball match! The courage and determination of the pupils to carry on with their education after such a devastating crisis was both humbling and inspiring. Stories in the media told of those who had survived the fire finding the resilience to sit their GCSE exams on the very morning of the fire.

David Goodhew said, “The students from KAA have been inspirational, with 100% attendance at their first assembly just days after the fire, and I have never been prouder of our School in the way that students welcomed the Sixth Formers from KAA. It was the right response and a very Latymerian one.”

The following week Latymer’s Wood Lane playing fields hosted the ‘Lashings All Stars’ charity cricket match in aid of Grenfell Tower victims. The ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ of cricket included such international greats as Devon Malcolm, John Emburey, Monty Panesar, Saqlain Mushtaq, Yasir Arafat and Tino Best. The legendary team took on the rather less athletic Houses of Commons and Lords team, which included MPs Jo Johnson, Nigel Adams, Alex Chalk and Richard Graham. With iconic commentator Henry Blofeld at the microphone, even the pouring rain did not dampen spirits and they raised over £5,000 for the Evening Standard’s ‘Dispossessed Fund’.

We felt honoured when, at last term’s Prize Giving ceremony, Kensington Aldridge Academy initiated a new annual prize – The Aldridge Cup for Voluntary Work in Schools. Annually the cup will be awarded to a Latymer pupil, for their work with our partner schools and acts as testament to the ongoing relationship between the two schools. The Grenfell community remains very much in the hearts of all at Latymer.

THE LATYMER FOUNDATIONObservant readers of our recent messages may have

noticed we have re-named the Development Office the

‘Latymer Foundation Office’.

The Foundation was created by Edward Latymer in 1624

when he bequeathed his wealth to educate eight ‘poore

boyes’ of Hammersmith. The Foundation continues to

carry out its founder’s vision to this day by providing

a life-changing education to local children at Latymer

Upper School and Latymer Prep, and by offering bursaries

to those who cannot otherwise afford our fees.

Using ‘Latymer Foundation Office’ better describes

our ongoing charitable commitment to engage with

the whole school community and to raise money for

providing means-tested bursaries.

In practical terms, our email addresses now end in

@latymerfoundation.org and our new website,

www.latymerfoundation.org, is up and running.

Please check our emails are not diverted to your ‘spam’

box, or you might miss out on some great events!

and TRIPSTwo long running school trips have big anniversaries this year. 2018 will be the 70th Anniversary of our German Exchange with the Johanneum, in Hamburg, and the 50th Anniversary of School visits to Grosmont.

The Hamburg Exchange was created by the late Walter GRAUBERG (1941) in the aftermath of WWII when he was a young army officer he helped Headmaster Wilkinson identify a partner school with our first students exchanging in 1948. Celebrations next April in Hamburg will mark seventy years of this historic link, which later extended to Godolphin and Latymer School. A number of you will recall

the 60th Anniversary in London, a decade ago, when many exchange partners some still in regular contact with each other dined in our School Hall. This included some of the founding partnerships!

Hamburg suffered heavy bombing damage and very little restoration had taken place when the first Latymer pupils met their exchange

partners in the city’s ruins. It was a significant gesture by Latymer at that time to form this exchange partnership, in hope of building lasting peace, whilst anti-German sentiment was still so high in England. A mark of Latymer’s tolerance that is still part of our ethos today. If you have fond school exchange memories do share these with us on Latymer Connects.

We are currently investigating whether a Grosmont Reunion, in or near to the village next July would be viable. Maybe

we have some potential organisers among our readers? If you and your partner/family fancied a short break camping

locally, or staying in a B&B or in a hotel do let us know! [email protected]

Grosmont in the marches of Monmouthshire is an idyllic village with its castle remains that has hosted our Year 7 pupils on holidays for 50 years come the next planned trip in July. Much-associated in recent decades with a legendary teacher, Robert Orme, those on the trip explore medieval monuments and the beautiful countryside.

We suspect many of you will have memories and stories from being on these trips and we would love you to share these on Latymer Connects.

■ Simon MANLEY (1984) had a starring role in a July edition of El Comidista, filmed in his official residence debating the merits of British v Spanish food, shown at prime time on TV channel, La Sexta. In the show, the cook accuses UK chefs of committing culinary atrocities. The British Ambassador put up a good defence for UK chefs explaining that we love Spanish products so much, but that we like to innovate with our food. Simon got him to taste some Welsh cheese and English beers, and discuss the English wine renaissance; then they made some traditional tortilla comparing this to Jamie Oliver’s version. They did not agree, so the cook calls in El Chicote, (Spain’s Gordon Ramsay) who restored diplomatic relations.

■ Raymond Geoffrey ENGLAND (1949)

■ Peter Dennis IVES (1958)

■ Henry John SADLER (1951)

■ Sydney John WOOLDRIDGE (1933) a retired local government officer, died aged 102.

■ Gottfried BURGER (1934)Gottfried’s war service was in the RAF as a Sergeant, followed by a career in local government for the LCC and GLC. In 1976, he retired and had been living in the Dordogne. Gottfried had several relatives attend school and he had reached 102 years at the time of his passing.

■ Gerald Raymond BURT OBE BEM (Mil) FCIT FRSA (1942)Gerry was a former Chief Secretary to the British Railways Board, the last and longest serving incumbent of that office. He spent 4 decades in the rail industry and was critical of successive governments’ political misdirection; he donated a copy of his autobiography One Railwayman’s Life to the School. Many acknowledged that under his stewardship British Rail ended up as the most efficient rail system in Europe, costing the taxpayer less than the arrangements made since its privatisation.

At School, he was in the Air Training Corps and vividly recalled evacuation to Slough, Harvest Camps and night-time fire warden duty. Gerry was one of three brothers; the late Leslie (1938) and Arthur (1945), all on LCC Scholarships. Gerry was very grateful for the assistance, as his family was poor and both his parents were deaf; he was a member of the School’s 1624 Society. He had two sons, with wife Edna, and five grandchildren.

■ Gerald Waynne CHAMPNISS (1964) Waynne lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He passed away in May, aged just 70 years. He was the son of Gerald (1936) and brother to Clarke (1973) and Alex (1970), to whom we extend our condolences. Waynne was active in both the CCF and the Gild while at School.

■ Bryan GOULT (1948)Bryan was a farmer in North Devon. He passed away in November 2016, aged 86, leaving his children and grandchildren. Bryan was a regular donor to the Bursaries Appeal; his monthly gift with Gift Aid, over ten years has been a great boost to the fund.

■ Brian HAYWARD (1955)Brian died very suddenly in Malbuisson. His wife Jill and sons James and Simon survive him. He often talked with pride about how he had enjoyed life at Latymer.

Brian had moved to Bristol, settling in Clevedon in the 1960s. His highly successful and distinguished career in the coal trade saw him well regarded both locally and nationally in that sector.

We are sad to record the passing of the following Latymerians:

After retiring in the mid-nineties, Brian spent much of his time travelling with Jill. They particularly liked going off the beaten track, away from the crowds; and spending weeks at Malbuisson, a second home in the French Franche-Comté region, enjoying the fresh air by cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and taking invigorating summer walks.

■ John Baird MACMILLAN MA (1957) On graduating from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, John spent enough time working ‘in the City’ to learn that it was not for him. He became a teacher of English in London and Turin for a few years, before embarking on a 25-year career with Unisys. Following a reorganisation, he chose not to take a position in central Europe, returning to teach English to overseas university students.

He retired in 2007 to Sauveterre, a village in Languedoc near Avignon. He enjoyed the opera and concerts in the Avignon Festival and was active in Sauveterre’s ‘twinning’ with an Italian village. His first wife, Jo, sadly died young nearly thirty years ago. John is survived by his second wife, Sarah, Stephen, his son from his first marriage, and his brother, Roderic (1963). John is sadly missed and fondly remembered, by his family and many friends. His funeral took place in Avignon.

■ Peter Denis PIEJUS (1936)Peter attended Latymer from 1930-36. He served in the Territorial Army from 1938-45 as a gunner in the Royal Artillery. His later career was in Marine Insurance as a manager with Commercial Union.

■ Malcolm Hugh SMITH BTech (1964)Malcolm was a Brunel University graduate in Psychology and was the director of his own management consultancy companies.

■ Ian Pashley GIBB BA ALA (1944)Ian died aged 91. He studied French and German at University College London and after six years working in UCL’s library, he became deputy librarian of the National Central Library, an inter-lending agency supporting public and academic libraries.

In 1973, he moved to the Science Reference Library of the British Library as deputy director, before becoming Deputy Director General.

In the following decade, Ian contributed greatly to the development of the Library’s newspaper, the Newsplan, of a conservation programme, the publishing office and the establishment of a preservation service that looks after the conservation and repair of the library’s print and digital collections. He also supported innovative projects such as the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue, collating books, pamphlets and ephemera up to 1800.

He played a key role in ensuring that the British Museum Library became fully part of the new British Library.

Retiring in 1987, Ian helped to create the Friends of the British Library. He was chair of Dacorum National Trust Association in Hertfordshire (1993-97), and continued his love of music, cricket and travel. He was married to Patricia Butler and after her passing, he was partner to Mary Craddock-Jones for 20 years.

27 September 2017 is a date all Latymerians will be proud to remember. It marked a hugely significant occasion – the official launch of the Latymer Foundation’s ambitious Inspiring Minds campaign, which aims to double Latymer Upper School and Latymer Prep Schools’ bursary provision.

This is, to date, the Foundation’s most ambitious fundraising campaign. Those in attendance at the launch event made history together, each of them committing to help in some way to raise £40 million by 2024 – the 400th anniversary of the Latymer Foundation. The campaign will re-endow the Foundation and ensure that bursary places will continue to be offered for the foreseeable future, so that students from all walks of life may benefit

from a Latymer education. Without the help of the Latymer community, the future expansion of the bursary programme is at risk. The time to act is now!

Latymerians have always gone on to excel in a wide variety of careers, and Latymer’s teachers have been equipping generations of Latymerians with the tools to do so. This campaign celebrates the people within the Latymer community, who make the experience of being a member of it like no other. They are each extraordinary, inspiring individuals whose stories deserve telling. Hence our campaign title, “Inspiring Minds”.

The stories of Latymerians, like Sir Harpal KUMAR (1982) and Natalie ABRAHAMI (1998) featured on our new Foundation website are inspiring. Although they excel in very different professions, they share one aspect of their lives; all of our Inspiring Minds were given the chance to flourish at Latymer through a direct grant, an assisted place or a means tested bursary, depending on when they attended Latymer. Currently we provide 1 in 10 students with a bursary. Through the Inspiring Minds campaign we hope to provide 1 in 4 students by 2024. Contributions of even £5 per month will make help make this a reality. Then, come 2024, we will have one more story to tell: the story about how the Latymer community came together to achieve such an ambitious goal and became the leading bursaries provider of independent schools in Britain.

Three Latymerians, of different eras, are inspired by the speeches during the launch of our Inspiring Minds campaign

Alan RICKMAN (1964): actor and friendThe School hosted a celebration of Alan’s life and career in the School Hall in May. The event was well-attended by many Latymerians together with Alan’s friends and fans. Ruby Wax, Juliet Stephenson, led the celebration with Kirsty Lang. Ruby was a life-long friend of Alan having met at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1976. Kirsty is a radio and TV presenter who acted as MC; Juliet starred in Truly, Madly, Deeply with Alan.

Alan had remained a good friend of Latymer, where he first trod the boards on the School stage. He had returned to be our honoured guest at Prize Giving a few years ago. To commemorate his great commitment to the School, a bursary has been created in his name. More information on this is on our website. Alan himself attended Latymer on a full scholarship.

Lyon and Turnbull recently sold an oil on canvas by Thomas Faed Highland Lass, which was a gift toLatymer from the US estate ofthe late Anne Stean, formerly wife to the School doctor. The proceeds went to the Dr Joshua Stein Music Award. This fund helps pupils afford music lessons and we gratefully thank Anne’s nephew, George Weeks, and other family members who have set up and supported this fund.

Just think, if every Latymerian who is yet to support our campaign was to send us a gift for Christmas, how inspiring that would be in helping us with this campaign.

In the May edition’s Letters, Bryan MILLS (1950) wrote claiming to be “the longest working member of the UK IT community”. Whilst congratulating him on his long service, I have to point out that many others still alive have even longer periods in this field of “active service”. Although not claiming any particular distinction here, I would mention that I started in 1953 as a research graduate at London University, building what was then one of the very first universal electronic stored-program computers

in the world. The computer was successfully completed and used, not only for numerical calculations of protein structures at the lab where Rosalind Franklin was working, but also for what I believe was the very first demonstration of machine translation of natural languages. I am happy to say that I too am still active in physics and inter alia, in what is now termed IT.

MORE ON AISLA AND MARION – our long running

thread of 2 girls who joined 6th Form lessons around 1950.

We have had other contributors, confirming and adding to the

detail about the productions in which the two girls featured. We are

informed that the link with Twickenham county school for girls was

via Mrs Greatwood, wife to our Head of German. Apparently,

Mr F Gregory, Head of Modern Languages, set up the Russian classes

that they joined. Aisla was admitted for conversation classes run

by Mr Dakovitch, proprietor of an art gallery nr Kensington Church

Street and she subsequently obtained a degree in Russian at UCL.

D OF E MEMORIESPaul HUGHES (1960) wrote with photos for our archives and to share on Latymer Connects from school expeditions. In his covering letter he wrote, “I recall travelling in the school coach; we did not break down this time, but I do recall Tom Stewart getting stopped for speeding – 30mph in those days. He got off by claiming he thought the limit did not apply to privately owned buses.”

I recently attended a concert by the zany group, ‘Bonzo Bills’. The leading light in

this group was Roger Ruskin SPEAR (1960); we sat together at Latymer in 1960

and have not met since. Roger plays the clarinet and saxophone. He has been in the

entertainment industry since leaving school. He was a founder member of another

zany outfit, ‘The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band’ and a number of others including, ‘Three

Bonzos and a Piano’ and ‘Bill Posters Will Be Band’. His party piece is on stage to make

a ‘clarinet’ from a carrot, play it and encourages the audience to sing along; we gave

a rendition of I’d like to teach the world to sing. Bonzo Bills are often performing at

The Bulls Head, Barnes. Incidentally, Roger’s father, Ruskin Spear, was a famous artist

who painted the portrait of headmaster Fred Wilkinson, which hangs in the School Hall.

Letters to the Editor…

THE LAURIE ELLIOT TRAVEL AWARD This summer, I was lucky enough to travel to Madagascar, helped by the Laurie Elliot Travel Award. I was volunteering for 10 weeks in Sainte Luce, a remote village in SE Madagascar, with a British based charity called SEED Madagascar. I was part of their conservation scheme, which focusses on conserving forests and teaching the local community the importance of forest sustainability.

A grueling 27-hour journey, via Istanbul, Mauritius and Antananarivo, led me to Fort Dauphin and then onto a 5-hour drive to the village, which was beautiful. It would make a great tourist resort with lovely beaches and amazing wildlife, but the journey on poor roads takes far too long for this to develop.

Our work in Sainte Luce involved transects through the forest, looking out for lemurs, or for reptiles and amphibians. Once spotted, we collected data to create a census of the many different species and of the four different lemur species.

The data prevents the local mining company from destroying the forest and mining all of the alunite found underneath, if it shows that there is a thriving population of a potentially endangered species

Many transects were done at night, using head torches and it took me a long time to adjust to the constant buzzing of thousands of weird looking bugs around my head! We also woke up before the sun to measure all the lobsters

being caught by the local fisherman to make sure they were above the minimum size (which they often were not) as well as catching dragonflies, counting flying foxes, searching for crocodiles and teaching English and conservation to local school children. Probably my favourite activity of those was catching the dragonflies, I loved running around a field with a huge net trying to catch dragonflies whilst also feeling like some sort of pioneering explorer. We were looking for a female of a new species, a male having been discovered a couple of years ago.

I had been seriously worried about the realities of a camp life for 10 weeks and on arrival, I was definitely shocked, however this soon wore off as I got used to the nitty gritty realities of living in a tent for 10 weeks. As I was leaving Madagascar, I was sad to leave the rice and beans, cold bucket showers and holes in the ground for the next group of volunteers! After volunteering, I decided to travel around Madagascar for 3 weeks with Harry (a fellow Latymerian). Madagascar has very little infrastructure so we were taking public minibuses down one of the few paved roads through the country, from Tulear in the south to Antananarivo, the capital. Travelling around was definitely worth it in the end, as we saw far more species of lemurs and reptiles as well as experiencing a very different climate in the southwest. Madagascar is an amazing country and volunteering was definitely one of the best things I have ever done that I would recommend to anyone who is taking a gap year, especially if you have any interest in conservation, Geography, or Biology.

LATYMERIANS’ GOLF DAY 2017Those who slept through violent thunderstorms during the

night woke on 7 June to find it was still raining heavily. Many

roads were flooded, but true Latymerian determination

drove everyone on to Lambourne Golf Club in Buckinghamshire

for a 1pm tee off, just as the sun started shining! The course

dried out quickly and 22 Lats enjoyed a great day’s golf. After

a fine meal, Alan ANDERSON (1958) presented the prizes.

LATYMERIANS’ GOLF DAY 2017

Peter SKEGGS (1970) played the best round of the day. Runner up was debutant Roy DINSMORE (1979). The Denis JONES Memorial Prize for the most improved golfer went to Ziggy LUBKOWSKI (1983) who received the trophy from guest of honour, Jackie Jones. Next year’s event is on Friday 25 May 2018 at Hoebridge Golf Centre in Woking, Surrey. New participants (and guests) are welcome, for more detail please contact the organiser, Ian MACLEOD (1962): [email protected]

LUNCH IN KENTLinde and John WOTTON (1971), assisted by their son Tom, opened their home to

a party of Latymerians for a Sunday buffet lunch and a tour of their historic grade

II listed 15th century house and its 5 acres of well-tended gardens. Their generous

hospitality was well received and all marvelled at the way that they had kept

and maintained such a superb property. Each of the 35 participants of this event

made a donation towards the Latymer Bursaries Appeal, in appreciation of the

Foundation Office’s organisation of this event.Foundation Office’s organisation of this event.

HENLEY TEA AND BBQLatymerians traditionally gather at the Henley Regatta for a Tea in Stewards’ Enclosure on the Wednesday, where parents and alumni discuss the racing hosted by Richard PHELPS (1983). This year the School had three crews, competing with two, racing on the Wednesday. Then again, on the Saturday evening for an informal and fun Boat Club’s BBQ attended by around 60 Latymerians in the Cricket Field.

Left to right: Richard PHELPS (1983), Tom Cannon (Assistant Head of Boats), Dr Alex PARR (2010), Gary PAINTER (1977), Jack HARBIDGE (2015), Chris Clark (Coach) and Phil McGee (Head of Boats), resplendent in their School rowing blazers

THE SOMME BATTLEFIELDS

Our third trip to visit the Somme battlefields in France, to Commemorate WW1, took place in April, led by Taylor DOWNING and Jim NICOLSON (both 1971). Former Deputy Head Alex Hirst attended with his wife and reported back:

Each of the 26 participants made a donation towards the Bursaries Appeal in appreciation of our organisation of this event.

“…the trip run by Taylor and Jim was extraordinary. Taylor has encyclopedic knowledge of all aspects of the war; not only encompassing the historical and political perspective, but also comprising information about the individual battles as well as the works of the Medical Corps and about the Generals.

At every cemetery we visited, Taylor and Jim were able to pick out, first, one of the individuals. From there, a combination of photographs; letters written to their loved ones on the eve of their death; and reports to their wives from their company commander or chaplain made for a helter-skelter of emotions.

A key part of the experience was to ask members of the group to read out some of these letters. This was a masterstroke, catapulting the reader back to when the letter had been written. The result was not a single dry eye in the cemetery.

For Linds [my wife] and I this was a stellar trip which brought the Somme and the people who served, died and in some cases survived to a very moving experience.

Taylor and Jim are exceptional and as teachers they would be listed, in an inspection report, as ‘extraordinarily outstanding’”.
