To Your Health

It’s that time of year to review some basic facts about flu and pneumonia. While we’ve heard it all before, it’s important to review what we’re up against this year and how to prevent these serious infections from invading our immune systems.Influenza/the “Flu” is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Flu viruses are spread through transmission of respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. The virus spreads from person to person. Sometimes a person can become infected when they touch something with the flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu symptoms include fever (greater than 101) often with chills, headache, extreme tiredness and muscle aches, dry cough and sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (more common for children). Complications may include dehydration, pneumonia and worsening of chronic medical conditions (e.g., congestive heart failure, diabetes or asthma).WHO’S AT HIGH RISK: Individuals 65 years of age and older, as well as residents of nursing homes or long term care facilities may be at high risk. The following adults and children 6 months of age and older may also be at high risk: those with chronic heart problems, lung conditions (asthma), or hospitalizations in the previous year due to metabolic diseases (e.g., diabetes, kidney disease or weak immune systems); individuals who are on long term aspirin therapy; women who are pregnant during the flu season (October through May); healthcare providers; and family members living with any of the above individuals. Any child 6 to 23 months of age is

also at high risk. PREVENTION:Vaccination- The most effective way to prevent the flu is to get an annual flu vaccination. The best time to get a vaccination is October or November, but getting vaccinated in December or later can still be beneficial. People who have allergies to eggs, have certain neurological diseases or have had an allergic reaction to the flu shot should NOT get the vaccination. Good Health Habits • Frequent hand washing with warm soap and water • Stay home when you are sick (also prevents others from getting sick)• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (and wash your hands after)• Avoid close contact – keep your distance from those who are sick • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes• Don’t share drinking cups, straws or eating utensils with others • Eat healthy (increase fruits, vegetable, proteins and stay hydrated)• Get plenty of restCall your personal physician to see when he/she may have the flu vaccination available in the office. To learn about NCH’s community flu shot clinics, call the NCH Flu Shot Hotline at 1.847.618.4.FLU (4358) or visit www.nch.org. If you are in the hospital or receiving homecare services during October or November, don’t hesitate to ask your nurse for the flu shot.
