There is something special aboutstepping into the New Year. As youcross an invisible barrier, thanks to anaccident of geography and time, there’soften a sense of hope and anticipationabout what’s to come. There may also bea little whisper of anxiety.
You can experience the same cocktailof emotions when you venture into atheatre. Sometimes you turn up for apopular production by some familiarartists, confident in the expectation ofa very pleasant evening mapped out byapplause, laughter, and a nice chat inthe bar at the interval.
But occasionally you might come in witha different ticket, opting for an unfamiliartitle with some little-known artists orsome challenging subject matter. Youknow there’s a risk, but there’s alsothe possibility of something special –original, exciting, thought provoking –that happens exactly because theperformers and audience are equallyprepared to try something new.
So when you plan your diary for 2013,why not add in a new show along withthe ones you always pick? Top tips foran exciting evening are the movinghuman story of My Name is RachelCorrie, Vox Motus’ surreal comedySlick, a set of meditative dancesWithin This Dust, and a concert titledKarmawhere saxophonist TommySmith crosses musical boundaries insublime style.
It’s the New Year, time to push your ownboundaries and surprise yourself.

A VINTAGE MASTERPIECE
The Ladykillers (PG)Step back in time and revisit one of the all-time
great Ealing comedies.
This tale of a gang of crooks(including Alec Guinness andPeter Sellers) and their bumblingattempts to bump off theireccentric elderly landlady wasdirected by Alexander
Mackendrick, one of Scotland’sfinest filmmakers, and has been keeping audiencesin stitches for nearly sixty years.
It isn’t just the film itself which will transport you tothe 1950s though, as we'll be reviving the long-losttraditions of going to the pictures in Scotland withsome period surprises of our own…
Sponsored by the Tweeddale Film Club.

CLOSE UP ON A CLASSIC
Local Hero (PG)In 1983, Bill Forsyth madeLocal Hero, the gentlycomic tale of Mac, anAmerican who learns tolove the Highlands whenhe is sent over fromHouston to buy up land
to build an oil refinery. Thefilm has endured, with its great cast (includingFulton Mackay, Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi),unforgettable locations and gorgeous soundtrackmaking it one of the best loved films of all time, notjust in Scotland, but around the world. This rarechance to see it back on the big screen provides an opportunity for audiences to reacquaintthemselves with a uniquely Scottish masterpiece.

SCOTTISH DOCUMENTARY
You’ve BeenTrumped (PG)A tale of another American coming over to theHighlands to buy up land, but with rather differentconsequences. Filmmaker Anthony Baxter set outto investigate Donald Trump’s purchasing of one ofScotland’s last natural wildernesses against thewishes of the local population to create a hotel andgolf course complex, but found his way blocked atevery turn by the police, the local authorities andTrump’s men. This compelling documentary quotesLocal Hero, and demonstrates the great influenceof Forsyth’s film right up to the present day, as wellas presenting a powerful example of the dignity ofrural Scottish communitiesin the face of big business.

This intriguing play humorously unearths the reasons why itnearly didn’t happen. Set backstage with Margaret Rutherford, she’s about toassay her first outing as Jane Marple. BabelfishAuditorium
The marvellously mutant musical organism knownas Babelfish was first spawned well over a decadeago, at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival.Emerging from the primordial soup of the infamousFestival Club, Babelfish developed a sound whosesources range from traditional Scottish to JimiHendrix, cross-fertilising Celtic, Balkan, jazz, rockand funk influences.
Urquhart alternately muses and inveighs amidstmusic that roams from wayward adventure toanthemic euphoria. It might be a wholly untamedbeast, but Babelfish somehow engenders its owninternal logic, a fusion of freedom and discipline tomake you dance, smile, ponder and dream.
