The publication of this issue of Barre Life magazine mark the end of one era and the beginning of another. Our magazine i produced comple tely via de ktop publi hing. What onc involved everal people and everal step - from sketching a rough layout, etting
typ from a vari ty of manu cripts, designing pages to make sure everything fits properly, and pleasingly, to the final pasteup and stripping in of photo - can now be done by one person and in a fraction of the time. A the on of a newspaper publi her who prepared weekly The Hardwick Gazette via a Monotype machine. I find this approach to publishing amazing.

BGA manufacturers have kept up with the demand of the marketplace and now offer an incredible range of products made from granite. "Bridging the Gap" is the second in a two-part seri s on nonmonume nta l products available from BGA members. The response to the fir t part, "Granite's Hom corning," has been great. So great , in fa ct, that we are prep aring a granite products bro chure that will debut at the MB A

Bridging The Gap Granite's Outside Opportunities
In the Fall 1994 i ue of Barre Life, we featured photograph of beautiful granite products manufactured by BGA manufacturers for use in interior applications in an article entitled, "The Inside tory: Granite's Homecoming." The interest in that article and in those products ("I didn't know you made thing like that in Barre?") ha been tremendous. In thi , our second installment, we step outside to see what types
of products are available for use in and around the garden and in building work - teps, sundials, cobblestones, pavers, flagpoles, even the rock-pitch and sanded Swenson Gray granite bridge (below) located at the Sheldon Library at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. - that can bridge the gap between sales of monuments and interior granite products, particularly during the lmy winter months. Those imperfection inherent to stone that brand some slab unacceptable for a monumental ~york provide a natural, mstic look for many of the products pictured. Adams Granite Company/Granite Importers #2: Residential Walkway of Chelmsford Granite was designed by Rich Tousignant of Adams Granite Company and his wife, Mary, of Granite Importers. Planking is 0-2 x 0-4 and varies in length up to 8-0. Sawn at Granite Importers; finish cutting and installation by Rich Tousignant.
Colombo Granite Company #3: 0-4 x 0-4 x 0-4 Ryegate Gray Granite Cobblestone Private Residence Driveway. Cobblestones split on four faces; sawed on two. Installed by O'Hara and Griffin, Ashland, Mass.
Rouleau Granite Company #4: Barre Gray Granite Sundial/Artesian Well Cap measures 2-0 x 2-0 x 2-7 and is cored and epoxied to cover the exposed plumbing and electrical supply. It is easily removed for servicing vater s stem, provides a functional and historic timepiece, and di pia s permament statistics of the drilled veil.

Granite Industries of Vermont #8: Bethel White Granite Pavers for Paramount Canada Wonderland, Maple Ontario, Canada. Each of the 80 2-6 x 2-6 x 0-2 thermal-top pavers, which line a walkway at the theme park, features information about an Academy Award-winning movie and were manufactured for The Schott Monument Co., Cincinnati, Ohio.
Riverton Memorial #10: Polished Black Granite Mailbox measures 0-8 x 0-8 x 1-5 and is decorated with tiger etching. It's epoxied to a 4-0 Barre Gray Granite Post that tapers from 0-10 x 0-8 at the base to 0-8 x 0-8. Designed by Riverton Memorials and installed at the Berlin, Vt., home of Debbie Lunt.
Family Memorials #11: All-stippled Quincy Granite Birdbath is 2-0 tall and was designed by Robert Couture of Family Memorials who crafted it from a discarded memorial.
North Barre Granite Company #12: Onyx Black Door Step measures 3-0 x 1-4 x 0-2 designed by Charles Chatot for residential use.

Lawson Granite Company On The Cutting Edge Of Technology
To keep pace with increased demands, granite manufacturers today must keep a watchful eye on new
technologies, and Lawson Granite Company of Barre Town is a granite manufacturer with both eyes wide open. In August, the 60-yearold ftrm built a ,,*.000 square-foot saw plant (left) adjacent to its main plant to house two 11'-6' computer -driven diamond saws (below) manufactured domestically by Wilson Saws and installed in September. Each saw is capable of sawing a truckload of granite daily. Since moving to its new location in Wilson Park in 1987, the Lawson plant has almost doubled in size through carefully planned additions - from its Oliginal 32,000 square feet to a total of 54,000 square feet, making it one of the larger BGA members.

Granite Industries of Vermont Expands Capabilities, Product Line
With the installation of a new 54-inch, computer-driven diamond saw and a good supply of quality Danby
Vermont Marble , Granite Industries of Vermont continues to expand its production capabilities, its product line and the variety of stone it supplies to retailers of stone products. "The addition of this saw will also benefit our monument customers by freeing up other plant equipment," says President Jeff Martell. The saw, manufactured locally by BGA Supporting Member Firm Ducharme's Machine Shop, will be used to cut granite and marble slabs for feature work, mausoleums and in the firm's production of government-issued \'eterans markers. Rouleau Granite Company Diversity Is Its Middle Name
Diversity in its prociua line has wa. -been a source of pride a_.d way of thinking for the Rouleau family.
"You might say Rouleau inYenred the \\-ord," says Plant Manager Ray Rouleau jokingly. As far back as 1982, Rouleau Granire Company branched out from the monument bu iness and began to produce precision granire swface plates used in the machine-tool and aero pace industries. For special reque ts rhe company has even worked in marble, slate, bro\"nstone and bronze. On any given day, Rouleau worker may be busy assemblin g Metrocraft family mausoleums, fabricating benches and other granite products as well as producing its quality granite monuments.

Michael Lafaille joins the Anderson-Friberg Company office taff a home-office anchorman on the AFCO team of cott \Vright. Da\Oid Reid. Dick Gale. Bob Pope and Peter Friberg. \1 ith 20 year of experience in customer relations at Rock of Ages Corporation, Mike i well-versed in all aspects of quality monument manufacturing and will enhance AFCO's service to their customers. He and his wife, icole, reside in Ea t Barre wid1 their sons Chris and Jeff.
Jim Soutar of Rouleau Granite Company wa awarded this plaque from Weld County Veterans Memorial Committee Chairman Rick Wertz for Jim's palticipation and contribution to the Veterans Memorial of Weld County. The II-piece Bane Gray granite memorial (the tallest piece is 15 feet), 11 granite benches and two rings of granite paving were manufactured by Rouleau Granite Company for Everlasting Memorials in Greeley, Co.

The cheerful voice that greets customer ar NOlth Bane Granite Company belongs to Christy Barclay, a 10-year veteran of the Ban'e granite indusuy who has been wid1 orth Bane Granite firm since June 1992. ChriSty, a mother of 5-year-old twin girls, is a receptionist, a customer service repre entative, a data-entry clerk and secretary. Her career in the granite industry began in 1984 a receptionist at Maurice Memorials. he and her husband, Peter, live in Woodbury, Vt.

Montpelier Granite Works Celebrates 60th Anniversary
In 1925 when Vermont's own Calvin Coolidge reigned as president and the nation was dancing to the Charleston,
the late Steve Mureta founded Montpelier Granite Works, one of the BGA's older members. The Mureta Family, Steve's son, Joseph, and Joseph's sons, Dan and Doug, and daughters, Lynda and Michelle still own and operate the company 60 years later. Sixteen members of the Barre Granite Association will display their products and services at the upcoming MBNA Convention and Monument Industty Show at the Stouffer Hotel and Nashville Convention Center, which will feature nearly 100 exhibitors, according to the MBNA. As it has done in the past, the BGA is sponsoring a speaker breakfast. This year, the BGA is proud to present Austin McGonigle, president and founder of Success Cycle at 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 31. Mr. McGonigle is known as America's thought provoker and is in great demand because of his ability to impact an audience. He believes that a person's success in sales, customer service, negotiations and coaching is rooted in his or her interaction skills; his ability to ask, listen and relate to others. Mr. McGonigle has delivered sales training seminars and motivational sales talks at companies, including IBM, Kawasaki, MCI, and Stouffer Hotels.
