REFLECTION ON THE MYSTERY OF THE

HOLY TRINITY_________________REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO

This Sunday, the Sunday that followsthe Feast of the Pentecost is theTrinity Sunday. This feast is also knownas “The Solemnity of the Most HolyTrinity.” This is the greatest and themost fundamental dogma of our faith.On this truth all other truths of our faithdepends and emerges. This is one ofthe few feasts of the Christian Year thatcelebrates a doctrine rather than anevent or a person. During thecelebration of this feast wecommemorate and honor the OneTriune Eternal God: the Father, theSon, and the Holy Spirit. TrinitySunday is celebrated the Sunday afterPentecost, and lasts only one day,which is symbolic of the unity of theTrinity. The Eastern Churches have notradition of Trinity Sunday, arguingthat they celebrate the Trinity everySunday. Westerners do as well,although they set aside a special feastday for the purpose.

The Trinity is one of the mostfascinating and controversial Christiandogmas. The Blessed Trinity is amystery. By mystery, the Church doesnot mean that it is a problem to besolved but a truth that is above ourhuman comprehension that we maybegin to grasp, but ultimately mustknow through worship, symbol, andfaith. It has been said that mystery islike a sea in which one has to swim nota wall to run up against. Mystery, thus,means a supernatural fact revealed byGod which in itself transcends thenatural power of human reasoning.Plainly said, the mystery of the BlessedTrinity is a truth that we must live notto solve.

Basically, the Trinity is the belief thatGod is one in essence (Gk. ousia), butdistinct in person (Gk. hypostasis). Aperson in Greek language means “thatwhich stands on its own,” or “individualreality,” it follows then that the personsof the Trinity are three divine persons.So, we believe that the Father, the Son,and the Holy Spirit are somehowdistinct from one another, yetcompletely united in will and essence.How can this be? Well, first and

foremost the Blessed Trinity is amystery. Hence, must be lived and nota puzzle to be solved.

The first thousand years ofChristianity no special feast wascelebrated in honor of this mystery. Itwas only during the pontificate of PopeAlexander II (1073) that all the days ofthe liturgical year was devoted to thehonor and adoration of the SacredTrinity.

However, to neutralized andcounteract the Arian heresy that existedlong before Alexander II, a specialMass text in honor of the Holy Trinitywas inserted in the Roman liturgicalbooks that could be used on certainSundays for the personal piety ofpriests. This heresy was Christologicalin nature for it denies the fullness ofdivinity of the Son. So, Jesus Christ thesecond person of the Blessed Trinity isa mere man and not God. From the 9th

century onward, some French bishopspromoted in their own dioceses aspecial feast of the Holy Trinity,usually on the Sunday after Pentecostusing a special Mass text.

Starting from that time on and onwardthe custom of observing a special feastin honor of the Trinity becamepopular in the northern countries ofEurope. Several synods prescribed it fortheir respective territories in France,Germany, England, and TheNetherlands. In the 13th century theBenedictines and the Cisterciansadopted the annual celebration of thefeast but on different Sundays indifferent places. In 1334 Pope JohnXXII introduced the feast into theChurch’ Liturgical Calendar.

“The Trinity is more than a test of ourfaith”, writes Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.in his “Archives”, “It is also the perfectmodel of our selfless love. As revelationtells us, within the Godhead is aplurality of Persons, so that God isdefined as Love because He has withinHis own being, to use our language, theobject of love which is an Other withwhom each of the Persons can share thetotality of their being.

We therefore see from reflection on thisTriune Love that love by its essence isnot self-centered, that love unites, thatlove gives, and that love sharesperfectly within the Godhead. Love istherefore as perfect in us as itapproximates the perfect sharing thatconstitutes the Trinity.

At the same time, we recall that, whileperfectly selfless in their mutualsharing of the divine nature, thePersons in the Trinity do not therebycease to be themselves. Again, this is alesson for us. We are to give of ourselvesgenerously and without stinting.Nevertheless we are also to give in sucha way that we remain ourselves and notbecome, as it were, something else inthe process of sharing. There is such athing as calculating charity, when aperson gives of himself but “not toomuch” because he fears that his lovemay be too costly. This is not theteaching of Christ, who told us to loveothers not only as much as we loveourselves but as much as He loves us.

Saying this, however, is not to say thatcharity should not be wise. It wouldbe unwise if it deprived us of that whichGod wants us to be and made us lessthan we are expected to be. Charitymust, therefore, be enlightened; it mustbe guided by the standard of theTrinity, where each of the divinePersons gives and shares perfectly, yetwithout ceasing to be what eachPerson is to be. The Father does notbecome less the Father in begetting theSon and thus totally sharing the divinenature; nor do Father and Son cease tobe themselves although theycompletely share their divinity with theHoly Spirit.

We thus have a confluence of twomysteries, of the Trinity in heaven andof liberty on earth. The Trinity is thepattern for our liberty. If we use ourfreedom to love others as we should,modeled on the Triune God, we shallreach that God in eternity. This is ourhope, based on our faith, andconditioned by our love.”

Mr. Smart was left toraise the newborn and his other five children byhimself on a rural farm in eastern Washingtonstate. After Sonora became an adult, sherealized the selflessness her father had shownin raising his children as a single parent. It was

her father that made all the parental sacrificesand was, in the eyes of his daughter, acourageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonorasfather was born in June, so she chose to holdthe first Fathers Day celebration in Spokane,Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1924,President Calvin Coolidge supported the ideaof a national Fathers Day. In 1926, a NationalFathers Day Committee was formed in New YorkCity. Fathers Day was recognized by a JointResolution of Congress in 1956. Then in 1966,President Lyndon Johnson signed apresidential proclamation declaring the 3rdSunday of June as Fathers Day. PresidentRichard Nixon signed the law which finally madeit permanent in 1972. “Kita ang simbahan. Kada isa sa aton nga binunyagangintawag agud magpaambit sa kabuhi sang Dios kagipadayon ang misyon ni Hesus sa kalibutan. Ang pagkasimbahan isa ka panglakaton nga nagapadayon. Adlaw-adlaw, nahimo kita nga isa ka simbahan kag adlaw-adlawnagatinguha kita nga mangin tampad sa aton misyon saDiyos. Diri sa Arkidiosesis sang Jaro, malawig na ang atonpagpanglakaton bilang simbahan. Pero nagahandum kitasa guihapon nga mangin maukod kag matutom ngasumulunod ni Kristo. May nanari-sari nga mga workshops ang ginhatag sang mgaFacilitators kag ginpasakupan man sang mga partisipantes.Sa ulihi nga bahin, nagbinuligay sila sa pagbalay sangIdentity Statement halin sa mga elemento o kinaiya sangsimbahan nga makasabat kag mabinatyagon gid para sa ilatagsa nga katilingban. Ang ini nga Identity Stamentspagabalikan sa masunod naman nga mga hilikuton nga amuang validation kag finalization.
