Spotted Wine Drosophila The spotted wing drosophila (SWD) (Drosophila suzukii) is an invasive fruit fly that attacks fresh fruits and is a problem throughout much of the U.S. The ISU Plant & Insect Diagnostic Clinic first confirmed it in in Iowa in September of 2012. Increased population levels of SWD started to show up around mid-July in Iowa this season. Drosophila flies, sometimes called vinegar flies, are familiar to producers and homeowners. The household fruit fly is commonly found on or near over ripe, damaged (Above) Male SWD. Females and fermenting fruits and vegetables. The new, invasive do not have the spotted wings. species is closely related but behaves very differently. strawberries and grapes. Larvae emerge inside the fruit and begin to feed causing collapse and eventual decay and complete destruction of the fruit. “Producers of raspberries, strawberries, plums and other soft skin fruits have been seriously impacted with maggots in the fruit. Unless monitored closely, entire crops can be lost. Monitoring for SWD in vineyards should start just prior to the grapes reaching around 15° Brix. Traps can be purchased or easily made. Here are some resources for SWD monitoring traps:

5. Trece – commercial SWD trap:

http://www.trece.com/PDF/Pherocon_SWD_flyer.pdf

6. Contech Enterprises commercial SWD trap: http://www.oregonblueberry.com/update/new.html

Hang traps in the shaded plant canopy where fruit are present. Place approximately 1 trap/acre in the vineyard. Once, SWD are detected in the vineyard, insecticide treatments should be timed every 5-7 days according to label directions until harvest is completed. It is highly recommended to rotate insecticidal products from a different Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) mode of action for each new application for resistance management. An insecticide treatment should be considered upon the first confirmed SWD catch. There are many insecticides labeled for grapes that can control SWD. Not all have SWD on their label. A few have been approved with an EPA 2EE Special Use Permit. The following table prepared by Joe Hannan, ISU Commercial Horticulture Specialist can be used as a guide in your SWD insecticide selection:

10-22, Deadline for 2016 NCR-SARE Research & Education Grants The 2016 North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) Research and Education Grant Program Call for Preproposals is now available online at http://www.northcentralsare.org/Grants/Our-Grant-Programs/Research-and-Education NCR-SARE’s Research and Education (R&E) program supports sustainable agriculture innovators with competitive research and education grants. Individual grants range from $50,000 to $200,000. NCR-SARE expects to fund about nine to ten projects in the twelve-state North Central Region.

NCR-SARE will be accepting online submissions for the Research and Education Grant Program using our online submission system. More information about the online submission system can be found in the call for preproposals. The deadline for Research and Education Program preproposals is October 22, 2015 at 4pm CDT. NCR-SARE administers each of its grant programs with specific goals, audiences, and timelines. The focus for each of the NCR-SARE grant programs is on research and education. Funding considerations are made based on the relevance and potential of the project to increase the sustainability of agriculture in the region, as well as how well the applicant articulates the research and education components of their sustainable agriculture grant proposals. NCR-SARE’s Administrative Council (AC) members decide which projects will receive SARE funds. The AC includes a diverse mix of agricultural stakeholders in the region. Council members hail from regional farms and ranches, the Cooperative Extension Service, universities, and nonprofit organizations. In addition, regional representatives of the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and NCR agribusinesses, state agencies, and foundations sit at the table to distribute grant money. Vineyard Yield Estimate Iowa is now passing through veraison and harvest is now just around the corner. Best to start preparing with a good yield estimate. Nothing will impair winery relations more than a vineyard bringing in half or twice the amount of grapes they told them they would. Avoid these awkward moments by spending some quality time to get an accurate yield estimate.

Page 5: Wine-Grower-News #311 8-4-15...Notable Quotables Articles of Interest Calendar of Events Spotted Wine Drosophila The spotted wing drosophila (SWD) (Drosophila suzukii) is an invasive

5

Crop estimation can be made throughout the growing season (from budburst on), with improving accuracy as the season progresses. At verasion, clusters are approximately 80% of what their final weight will be at harvest. Estimates are just estimates. They only estimate the potential yield. Accuracy improves with experience and the keeping of historical cluster weights and vineyard block yields The three primary components of any vineyard yield estimate involves multiplying the number of vines X average clusters per vine X average cluster weight. Each separate block and/or variety in the vineyard should have a separate yield estimate. . As a general rule, about 70% of your annual variation in yield comes from the number of clusters per vine and 30% comes from cluster weight. This means accurate cluster estimations are critical. The secret is to sample enough vines to get a representative sample. Here are some additional resources you can use for estimating the yield in your vineyard:

(Above) Potassium (K) deficiency symptoms on the older leaves are common to see after veraison. The grapes are taking up large quantities of potassium as they quickly add weight. K is a very mobile nutrient allowing the plant to move K from the older leaves to the fruit. Symptoms may be the result of wet/dry or compacted soils reducing root uptake, low soil K levels, over-cropping of the plant or very high calcium or magnesium levels in the soil interfering with K uptake. Having K deficiency symptoms on a few leaves on a few plants should not cause alarm. Seeing K deficiency symptoms showing on many plants and many leaves should cause one to look into the underlying problem.
