ThE hISTORY Of ThANkSGIvING IN ThE UNITED STATES
George Washington, leader of the revolutionary forces in the Ameri-can Revolutionary War, proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga. The Continental Congress proclaimed annual December Thanksgivings from 1777 to 1783, except in 1782.
George Washington again proclaimed Thanksgivings, now as President, in 1789 and 1795. President John Adams declared Thanksgivings in 1798 and 1799 and President James Madison declared the holiday twice in 1815; however, none of these were celebrated in autumn.
It was President Abraham Lincoln that set the holiday as a regular yearly event for the final Thursday of November in 1863.
In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared that Thanksgiv-ing would be the penultimate Thursday of November rather than the last. This was to give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas; at the time it was considered inappropriate to advertise goods for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. However, Roosevelt’s declaration was not mandatory; some states went along with this recommendation and others did not. The United States Congress in 1941 split the difference and established that the holiday would occur annually on the fourth Thursday of November, which was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last. On November 26th that year President Roosevelt signed this bill into US law.
Since 1970 some American Indians and others have held a Na-tional Day of Mourning protest on Thanksgiving at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

DEED RESTRICTIONS AND ARCHITECTURAL REVIEWReminder: Please submit an Architectural Review application prior to commencing any exterior changes to your property. An application is included in the “Windsong Whistler” for your convenience.
DEED RESTRICTION/HOmE ImpROVEmENTSCS Management Services is contracted to enforce our deed restric-tion guidelines in an effort to continuously improve our community and keep property values up. We would like to ask everyone to refer to their deed restrictions on issues that might pertain to our com-munity. Citing (if applicable to your guidelines) could result from one or more of the following:
1) Garage door paint should match your house or trim.2) Houses/garages should be clean of dirt and mildew.3) House, garage and trim in need of repainting (i.e. - fading, peeling or poor quality of paint).4) Trim boards, garage doors, shutters or gutters in need of repair.5) Oil stains in the driveway or street.6) Flower beds, shrubs or trees that need weeding or pruning.7) Yard Decorations should be repaired/maintained as needed.
Compliance with our community guidelines is greatly appreciated.
DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONSOn inspection of the community in September following violations were logged:
The purpose of the inspections is to bring about an improvement in the appearance of our community. Let’s all make an effort to reduce the number of violations each month. We want our community to look good and to maintain our property values. It is up to each of us individually to accomplish this.
mOSQUITO pROTECTIONWith West Nile Virus cases on the rise, mosquito safety has become an issue of concern. Cypress Creek Pest Control is contracted to pro-vide mosquito control, as a courtesy, by the Windsong CIA Board of Directors within your community. Please remember that this service does not eliminate mosquitoes 100%, but is intended to help reduce infestation. Running water is not a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in standing water. For additional information and/or maps of West Nile Virus activity in Harris County, visit www.hcphes.org Reduce the amount of standing water available for mosquito breeding around your home by:
• Disposing of cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers that have accumulated on your property. Do not overlook containers that have become overgrown by vegetation. • Empty standing water from used or discarded tires that may have accumulated on your property (e.g. tire swings). • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left out of doors. Drainage holes that are located on the sides collect enough water for mosquitoes to breed in. • Clean clogged roof gutters on an annual basis, particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug up the drains. Roof gutters are easily overlooked but can produce millions of mosquitoes each season.

• Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use. A wading pool becomes a mosquito producer if it is not used on a regular basis. • Turn over wheelbarrows and do not allow water to stagnate in birdbaths. Both provide breeding habitat for domestic mosquitoes. Change water in birdbaths and wading pools on a weekly basis. • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens are fashionable but become major mosquito producers if they are allowed to stagnate. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. A swimming pool that is left untended by a family that goes on vacation for a month can produce enough mosquitoes to result in neighborhood-wide complaints. Be aware that mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on swimming pool covers. • Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property. Mosquitoes can develop in any puddle that lasts more than 7 to 10 days during the summer.
To reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes:• Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. • Be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair. • Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin. • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies when outdoors. • Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to directions, when it is necessary to be outdoors.
Harris County alarm DetailPlease be aware that it is a requirement for you to obtain a per-mit for operating an alarm system within unincorporated Harris County. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. Should you require a copy of the permit application form or would like to review the regula-tions regarding permit requirements, you may do so by visiting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx.net. The application can be printed from the website, then completed and mailed to our office with the applicable fee. Should you have any questions, please contact the Alarm detail office at 713-755-4600 during normal business hours.

TRASH SERVICE INFORMATIONRoyal Disposal collects our trash. The homeowner’s maintenance fee does not pay for trash pick-up. Residents are billed quarterly in advance on an individual basis. A letter regarding this service was mailed to all residents in January and articles were published for the first few months of 2011 in the “Windsong Whistler.” Information is also published on a monthly basis on the inside back cover. If your trash is currently not being picked up, please call Royal Disposal to start service at 713-526-1536.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBORWe would like to address one of the items that the Windsong Com-munity Improvement Association gets the most complaints about. We receive many complaints from homeowners about vehicles parked on the street blocking the flow of traffic. The reason for that is because the roads were not designed with a parking lane. There is not enough width to allow for a parking lane. More seriously, when an emergency vehicle is unable to obtain egress and ingress to a street, precious minutes are lost that could mean loss of life/and or property.
The problem becomes intolerable in cul-de-sacs where emergency vehicles or others cannot turn around due to vehicles parking in-appropriately and not parallel to the curb. The neighbors of these improperly parked vehicles are inconvenienced when they have to go out of their way to get around them.

Be aware that Law Enforcement can and will ticket vehicles parked too far from the curb, parked the wrong way on the street, parked facing in on a cul-de-sac instead of parallel to the curb or parking too close to a fire hydrant or a traffic sign.
Everyone can “look the other way” and tolerate a vehicle parked tempo-rarily for a visitor. We are referring to vehicles parked overnight, day after day. Please try to think of others and be a good neighbor. Don’t block your neighbor’s ability to enter and exit his driveway safely or block his/or her mailbox. We know that the homes in Windsong have two car garages. If you have multiple vehicles, please try to park them in the driveway and/or the garage overnight and whenever possible. Your neighbors will thank you!

The Board of Directors and the Architectural Control Committee are concerned that residents are completing projects without prior approval. Did you know that if you complete any project that does not meet architectural guidelines you are in violation of the deed restrictions? The Association has the right to take action to enforce the deed restrictions and request the removal or modification of your improvement. We want you to know before hand so that you do not spend money on improvements that may not be approved. Remember, that the deed restrictions and the architectural guidelines are in place to protect neighborhood harmony and maintain everyone’s property values.
WINDSONG CIARESIDENT DEED RESTRICTION
COMPLAINT FORMThe Board of Directors receives resident complaint forms on a monthly basis. We thank those who take the time to send them. The forms are reviewed at the monthly Board meetings and then referred to SCS Management Services to process. SCS verifies the report during their next drive-by deed restriction patrol of the community. Many times we receive complaints such as disturbing the peace, animal smells coming from a house or yard, bark-ing dogs, neighbor to neighbor disputes, etc. We want to let you know that the association cannot enforce these types of reports.

EXTERIOR HOUSE PAINT COLOR SELECTIONThe WCIA provides many opportunities for the residents to obtain approval for exterior painting prior to commencing the work. PET HOTLINE NEWSKittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shop-ping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet.
Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If

The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be host-ing a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night.
In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call the church at 281-859-4141

have a stress free thanksgiving!
1. Get Enough SleepThis is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your BoundariesIf you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through!
4. Let Bygones be BygonesThere will be family members who love to make snarky little com-ments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone BusyAssign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Please note: the following is what the American egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These indi-viduals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods.
Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
