URBAN DESIGN STANDARDSDesigning a development proposal or subdivision
requires putting together many complex parts
including existing site features, streets, blocks,
building footprints, open spaces, architecture,
etcetera.
The Town of Collingwood is creating
Urban Design Standards for new
developments so they can achieve
Collingwood’s goals as described in
Town policies and initiatives, such as:
• the Official Plan;
• the Sustainable Community Plan; and,
• Active Transportation initiative.

Below are examples highlighting some unique aspects of the
Standards being developed.
UNIQUE STANDARDS
Adjacent to Heritage:
developments adjacent to the
Heritage District, and
Designated Heritage sites will
be required to be sensitive/
complimentary to these
cultural resources in design.
Green Roofs:
Collingwood may be the
second municipality in North
America requiring green roofson developments with larger
building footprints; reducing
their environmental impacts.
Natural Playground Design:Collingwood may be the first
municipality in North America
requiring natural playgrounds.
Their benefits include:
reduced impact on
environment; increased
diversity of play types; and,
improved aesthetics.

considered when developments are being designed. Similar
drawings may be required with development applications;assisting staff, interested stakeholders, committees and Town
Council in their review of applications.
