On Saturday, July 30 at around 3pm, the man, in his 40s, was on Ormskirk Road when he fell to the ground and suffered a serious head injury. A local eye witness, who contacted the Cham- pion but did not want to be named, sprinted over to help but quickly realised he was unconscious and not responding. One quick-thinking person then remembered there was a defibrillator inside the nearby Sports Direct gym, and the life-saving piece of medical equipment was used three times on the man while waiting for an ambulance. North West Ambulance Service confirmed that he was taken away in an ambulance to Aintree Hospital, but the hospital was unable to give an update on his condition. The eye witness, who is aged 55 and lives in Aintree, told the Champion: “I was crossing over the bridge towards Next and Sports Direct when I saw him walking towards me but didn't think much of it. Man who filmedw o m a n’s breastsin shop put onoffender ’s register
A MAN caught filming a woman’s breasts as shewalked around Curry’s PC World has been told hemay have to sign on the Sex Offender’s Register buthe hasn’t lost the love of his partner.
Andrew Randfield, 28, of Badby Wood, Kirkby, had followed the woman, who was with her part-ner and child, around the aisles of the store inAintree and filmed her on his mobile phone as hedid so.
At an initial court hearing, where Randfieldpleaded guilty to outraging public decency by film-ing a person for lustful purposes, it was heard howhe got “closer and closer” to the woman but whenher partner realised what was going on he washead butted then punched before the store’s secur-ity got involved .
The prosecutor at that time said that after Rand-field was arrested, he admitted that he wasfollowing the woman because he thought she was“very attractive” and was wearing a low-cut top:“He was simply filming her breasts,” the prosecutorsaid.
As he appeared at Sefton Magistrates Court onJuly 27 for sentencing, solicitor Mark Phillips saidthat though the incident was distasteful, thewoman was fully clothed and in a public place andit didn’t involve him exposing himself. “It mayoffend our sensibilities but where in the range ofoutraging public decency does that fall?” he said,“At the very lower end.”
Prosecutor Angela Blackmore emphasised thatRandfield had made admissions to police that hefilmed for his own sexual gratification and hencehis motives were clearly sexual. Because of that shesaid that the CPS were asking for a Sexual HarmPrevention Order, which she said would mean hewould have to also sign on the Sex Offenders’Re g i s t e r.
Mr Phillips told the court that following the publi-city of the initial hearing, Randfield, an electrician, had lost his job, though he still had some employ-ment. His partner was continuing to support him, however: “He is in a supportive relationship,” hesaid, “His partner is standing by him, and his part-ner ’s parents are standing by him as well.”
Ordering the destruction of the mobile phonewhich he had used to film the woman, the magis-trates sentenced Randfield to 80 hours of unpaidwork and made him pay £145 in costs and victims u rc h a rg e .
They adjourned until September 9 for a districtjudge to rule on whether he should be made sub-ject to a sexual harm prevention order.
Course puts youngsterson track for radio career
SO you want to be a radio DJ? Chat toyour audience, wow them with yoursearching interviews with interestingpeople.
Play all your favourite tunes.Well, no. It ain't so easy.Five young people have just been awar-
ded their diploma as graduates from theradio training course run by Maghull Com-munity Enterprise with local radio expertTim Brady from the National BroadcastingSchool as their mentor and help from PaulChallinor, Maghull Town Council's EventsO f f i c e r.
And most of what they have learned haslittle to do with just sitting in the studioenjoying themselves.
Tim said: “We gave them a six-weekcourse as an introduction to local radioand how it works.
“The studio and its equipment of course, but more important, one thing you mustlearn is that it is not just a matter of sitting
there and pressing buttons. What are yougoing to say, what are your guests going tosay?
“You have to know your audience andget them to want to listen to your show. It'sno good just playing tunes – they can getthat on any channel.
“It's simple in a way,” said Tim. “Very fewpeople can do it naturally – a few are 'nat-urals', but very few. So you have to thinkabout what you are going to do and toplay. You have to work out what you aregoing to do next, what you mean to playand when.
“But when you get the fundamentalsright it becomes so much easier and bet-ter! Target your listener – who are they?
“What age group are they? What aretheir jobs and what are their interests? Youcan even make mistakes by just sayingsomething. Is it what they want to hear, what they want you to say?”
Tim pointed out that the course has no'passes' or 'fails'. “We just try to train yougpeople in the basics of the job. And thoughthe certificate you gain has no officiallyrecognised status, it will most certainly get
youngsters off to a flying start.”One of the latest graduates, Ciaron,
agreed. Just about to start his second yearin the sixth form, he said: “I really didlearn a lot – it's not just a case of sitting inat the studio, you get really important tipsand information from professionals. Cer-tainly I came out of it with a far better ideaof what working in local radio reallymeans.”
Councillor Patrick McKinley, co-founderof Maghull Community Enterprise (MCE)and Maghull Radio, pointed out that MCEhas managed to provide these qualitytraining programmes by being proactiveand seeking out innovative new ideas thatcan build young people's skills andinterests in a productive way.
He said: “We are very pleased with thedevelopment of Maghull Radio, it hasprovided a great opportunity for manyyoung people to gain experience of run-ning a radio station, producing andbroadcasting programmes.
“We have been offering more formalisedtraining in radio production and this hasproven to be a great success.”

Man arrested over suspected murderA MAN has been arrested onsuspicion of attempted murderafter a 23-year-old was shot inthe arm in Crosby last week.
The 24-year-old, fromBootle, was questioned byofficers and released on bail inconnection to the shooting onConey Crescent on July25,which left the victim need-ing hospital treatment.
The suspected gunman wasalso arrested on suspicion of asecond attempted murder
which took place last year onMonfa Road, in Bootle, on 11M a y.
The Champion reported lastweek how the Crosby shootingwas being investigated bypolice with the possibility thathe was injured in Rimrose Val-ley Country Park before he wasfound lying on the ground onConey Crescent.
Officers have now said thathe was shot on nearby Edge-moor Close before stumbling
the short distance to ConeyC re s c e n t .
After the 23-year-old hadhospital treatment to his gun-shot wound, he refused to helppolice with their investigation.
Police enquiries are ongoing.Detective Chief Inspector
Mark Tivendale said: “I wantto reassure the public that ourcommitment to tackling guncrime is as strong as ever andwe will continue to take actionto protect our communities.”
A MAN from Bootle who was filmed snortingcocaine off the barrel of a shotgun has been jailedfor three years.
Adam Mercer, 22, of Cullen Avenue, Bootle, pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a firearmwithout a firearms certificate.
Also jailed were two men who were both linkedby DNA, photographs and video to a Baikal self-loading pistol which just three weeks before it camein to their possession was used to murder KevinWilson on Smithdown Road in February 2015.
The first is Malcolm Graham, 19, of Albert Road,Southport, who was sentenced to 11 years for pos-session of a prohibited firearm, possession of afirearm without a firearms certificate, possession ofammunition without a firearms certificate and twocounts of Section 20 wounding.
The second is Lewis Clarke, 18, of SouthportRoad, Formby, who was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to possession of aprohibited firearm, pos-session of ammunitionwithout a firearms certi-ficate.
He was also foundguilty of possession of afirearm with intent tocause fear of violenceand possession ofammunition with intentto cause fear of violenceafter he fired a blank fir-ing pistol whichcontained a homemadebullet during a disputeat a friend's house inGardner Road, Formbyon 14 May 2015.
The three were sen-tenced at LiverpoolCrown Court on Tues-day, July 2.
Detective InspectorRichie Jones, said: “Thesentencing of thesethree offenders sendsout a strong message tothose involved in guncrime - MerseysidePolice is committed totaking those involved in gun crime off the streets.
“Malcolm Graham and Lewis Clark were bothlinked by DNA, photographs and video to a Baikal
self-loading pistol which just three weeks before itcame in to their possession was used to murderKevin Wilson on Smithdown Road in February2015.
“These three thought they were untouchable andwere seen in photographs onphones owned by Graham andClarke with the weapons. Mer-cer was also videoed on thephone snorting cocaine off asawn-off shotgun.
“Alongside the firearmsoffences Malcolm Graham wassentenced for two section 20assaults, one was on a prisoninmate and the other was anassault on Adam Mercer.
“People like Malcolm Graham, and those he associates with, have a complete disregard foreach other, as you can see fromthe assault on Mercer, let aloneother members of the public.
“They use fear, violence andintimidation to get what theywant and think they can do whatthey want without any comeback. They couldn't be morewrong and I would like to reas-sure the public that MerseysidePolice is committed to takingpeople like Graham and his asso-ciates off our streets, but we needthe information to help us dothat.
“Tackling gun crime is a priority for MerseysidePolice and we will act on all information reportedto us.”

Drivers warned overspate of car thefts
AN outbreak of thefts of and from cars at their homeaddress has led to Community Police Inspector Phil Hattonappealing to local people to be more careful with their carke y s .
No one type of vehicle is being targeted but on two occa-sions the thieves gained entry to the vehicle using a 'hookand cane type implement where the keys have been visiblefrom outside
“It is amazing the number of people who still drop theirkeys into a receptical near the front door,” said InspectorHatton .
A common theme for these crimes in the Aintree,Melling, Maghull and Lydiate areas is also through offend-ers gaining entry through insecure doors and windows.
“I would ask that all residents display necessary vigil-ance, particularly through the warm summers months,”said the Inspector.
But the police are fighting back. “These offences occurforce-wide and we have an offender-focused responsewhich results in consistent successes and custodial sen-tences.
“However, we must not make it easy for travelling burg-lars. Never leave keys visible. Lock doors, windows andside gates. And if you see anything suspicious – phone thepolice!
And he gave this advice: “Engage with your neighboursor your local Homewatch,” he said.
“There has also been a spike in overnight theft frommotor vehicles in the same local places,” said Insp Hat-ton .
“Car windows have been smashed and valuable itemssuch as sat nav devices or laptops taken. Again I wouldurge people to consider what they are leaving on showbefore retiring into their homes.”
And he promised: “There will be increased patrols, arrests are being made.
“With the help of the community hopefully we can returnto our normal low levels of acquisitive crime sooner ratherthan later.” Inspector Phil Hatton.

Image released overcase of burglar whoposed as police officer
POLICE who are hunting a thief who pretendedto be an officer in order to steal from a duped res-ident from Bootle have released an e-fit image ofa wanted man.
As reported in the Champion, Tony Hand, wholives on Litherland Road, fell victim to the hoax onSaturday, July 16 when a man posing as a policeofficer called at his home before stealing cash.
The day before, on Friday, July 15 a burglar hadbroke into his house before taking £300 in cash andjeweller y.
Tony, 59, decided not to call the police, as hethought it may come across as an insurance scam, but the following morning a man dressed as anofficer showed up at his door.
The bogus officer claimed that two people hadbeen arrested for the previous day’s burglary andasked to he shown around the house as part of theinvestigation .
It was only afterwards that Tony realised that cashwhich had been left in the living room had beenstolen .
The man is described as white, approximately 40years of age, 5ft 9in tall of slim build, with greyreceding hair.
He had red marks on the bridge of his nose andunder his left eye. He was described as smartlydressed wearing a black weatherproof jacket withthe word ‘Po l i c e ’ embroidered on it.
House to house enquiries are being carried outand CCTV opportunities are being explored.
Detective Sergeant Jason Ennis said: "I would liketo reassure people that incidents like these are com-paratively rare.
“Offenders are usually very plausible and can poseas a range of officials, not just police officers.
However, any genuine official would carry identific-ation so always ask for this to be produced beforeallowing them to enter your home.
“By posing as police officers they are trying to gainthe resident’s trust or dissuade them from asking toomany searching questions.
“I would urge everyone in the area to be mindfulof this issue and to not only be vigilant whenanswering their own doors to cold callers but also tolook out for their neighbours, particularly if they areelderly or vulnerable in some other way.
“Our advice will always be that if you have anydoubts at all that someone is not who they say theyare, do not open the door to them, ask them to waitoutside or even leave and call a friend or relative orthe police for advice."

Hospital praised bycharity for helpingblind veterans
S TA F F at the ophthalmologydepartment at AintreeUniversity Hospital havebeen praised by a nationalmilitary charity forsupporting blind veterans.
Blind Veterans UK wereimpressed by changes made tothe patient referral pathwaywhich means more patients arebeing referred to the charity’sservices and support.
As a result, the hospital hasreduced the application timefor veterans by six weeks.
As part of their point of con-tact assessment at the EyeClinic, patients at Aintree Uni-versity Hospital suffering withsight loss are asked if they haveever served in the Army ordone National Service.
If so, they are referred on toBlind Veterans UK and receivespecialised talks about thec h a r i t y.
By following these referralprocedures the ophthalmologydepartment ensure that asmany eligible patients as pos-sible receive the free supportand services the charityp ro v i d e s .
Hilary Butter, an Eye ClinicLiaison officer (ECLO) fromBradbury Fields who is contrac-ted to Aintree Hospital, said:“After a patient has been dia-gnosed with sight loss, our goalis for their world to stay thesame, or expand.
“We never want their worldto get smaller. We receive won-derful feedback from thepatients we refer to Blind Veter-ans UK about the services, training and support they havere c e i v e d . ”
One of these patients is HarryGrundy, a vision impairedNational Service veteran fromBootle.
Harry was diagnosed withmacular degeneration in 2008and his eyesight graduallydeteriorated after this.
In 2011 he was registered aspartially sighted. Previously hehad enjoyed working on hisallotment but thought hewould have to give up garden-ing due to his eyesight.
He also became unable to dothe crossword and Sudokupuzzles which he had previ-ously enjoyed so much, andc o u l d n’t tell the time or readwithout a magnifying glass.
Harry said: “I was devastated
to lose my sight. I had nothingto do during the day, it was bor-ing. I relied on my wife forabsolutely everything.”
However, Harry’s lifechanged for the better whenthe staff at Aintree UniversityHospital referred him to BlindVeterans UK in 2015.
Since registering for support,Harry has found a new lease oflife. He has been given variousequipment from Blind VeteransUK, including a magnifyingscreen which means he cannow read and do puzzles again,a talking clock and watch toread out the time, and a tele-phone designed for partiallysighted people.
Harry said: “I was so thrilledto be able to take up my hob-bies once more. I have a greatappreciation for Blind VeteransUK. What they have done forme is out of this world. Theyhave made me feel part of thecommunity again.”

LIVERPOOL Pilotage Service, which has navig-ated ships in and out of the River Mersey for 250years, has been awarded the Freedom of Liverpool.
The service which guides vessels in and out of theriver to the locks, docks and jetties in Liverpool andSefton, was introduced by Act of Parliament toimprove safety on the Mersey following the loss of18 ships and 75 lives in in 1764.
It has seen many changes over the years, from theoriginal Old Dock to the new Liverpool2 containerberth built to handle the biggest ships in the world.
Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladdensaid: “The Liverpool Pilotage Service is at the heartof Liverpool’s history, ensuring the safety of ships ofall nations arriving and departing the port.
“The honour recognises its role in supporting tradeand industry vital to the city’s economic success.
“Without them, we would not be able to welcomecruise liners to the city or have hosted the hugelysuccessful Three Queens event last year.
“I am delighted to be able to confer on them theFreedom of Liverpool in tribute to their contributionto the maritime industry over the last 250 years.”
The Freedom of Liverpool was conferred on themat a special thanksgiving service at Liverpool ParishChurch on Thursday, July 28 led by the Rector ofLiverpool, the Reverend Dr Crispin Pailing.
Captain Chris Booker, chairman of Liverpool Pilot-age Services, said: “To be a Mersey River Pilot is a
very real privilege. From small sailing vessels tomighty container ships, bulk carriers to cruiseliners, Liverpool pilots have met the challenges ofthe tide and the wind every day for 250 years.
“It is easy to forget that over the first two centuriesa considerable number of pilots lost their lives in thecourse of their duties due to its hazardous nature.
“Today ’s pilots have a sophisticated electronicsimulator to hone their skills, but they still have theknowledge and skill to allow them to bring shipssafely in and out of the River Mersey whatever theweather conditions may throw at them.”
In its 250 year history there have been some 1,600River Pilots, and today the service is provided by 55self-employed River Pilots.

TV and film productionat record high in areaLIVERPOOL and Seftonare more popular thanever as locations for TVand film productions.
A report going to Liver-pool City Council's Cultureand Tourism Select Com-mittee on Tuesday, August 9reveals a record high forfilm and TV productions inthe area last year.
The report states that dur-ing 2015, 257 film and TVprojects came to the twoboroughs, resulting in1,067 filming days andbringing in £11.5million tothe local economy.
This is a 50% increase onthe previous year, with themain rise being the numberof days of filming per pro-ject.
Films included Golden Globe winning and Oscar-nominated movie 'Creed', which saw scenes set inand around Goodison Park.
The film, which stars Sylvester Stallone andMichael B. Jordan, also saw an appearance by Liv-erpool-born boxer and Everton fan Tony Bellew.
There was also Sky1 television drama 'The Five',which shot scenes on Crosby beach.
The success is set to continue as Liverpool’s smallFilm Office team predict that 2016/17 will beanother bumper year.
So far 147 productions have been filmed this yearresulting in 312 film days.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “Cameracrews are getting to be a regular sight on our streetsas we are one of the most filmed cities outside of
London. “Liverpool has a huge amount to offer pro-duction companies – amazing and diverselocations and a dedicated Film Office that is over-flowing with local knowledge and a can-doattitude which sees directors and producers returnto the city time and time again.
“It’s fantastic news that the momentum is con-tinuing and filming days are already at a high thisyear – so we’ll be seeing a lot more of Liverpool onthe big and small screen.”
Film Office manager, Lynn Saunders, said: “Ahuge amount of work goes in to attracting produc-tion companies to the city, and then working withthem in the run up to, during and post filming tomake sure all aspects run as smoothly as possibleand they have a positive experience of the city.”

PICTURE of the week
Juggling duo Reece and Nathan bring some circus skills street entertainment to Gingerbread Festival visitors last Saturday
Festival was well managed withsomething for everyone to enjoyRe: Waterloo Community Festival.
The event at Old Christ Church was splendid. The acoustics in the church were amazing and
our children got to hear lots of different music. We also went along to the Saturday event oppos-
ite the marine lake. This was well managed, the music was great,
food options were plentiful and the organisers alsoallowed people to take their own picnics making iteven more inclusive.
I didn't see any bother at either event; onlypeople of all ages enjoying themselves.
It was great for children - free face painting, yogaand mountain biking.
The event felt safe and there were volunteers allday litter picking to ensure the green space wasleft in good order.
A large cruise ship passed by early evening as thesun was going down - the atmosphere was won-derful. It is right that this event should not have
taken place in the Marine Gardens but I can'tunderstand why our community would oppose anannual festival.
Waterloo is a great place to live and visit butcould be even better.
We need more investment in the area - but notone that will ruin the serenity of the coast or ruinthe views.
We should have a decent deli, a traditional fishand chip shop, a florist, an ice cream parlou /shake shack on South Road or close by.
The Rough Guide has recently named Crosby asthe tenth best seaside town in the country!
The council could address the issue of toiletswith better signs and more toilet facilities.
Am hoping the sun shines again next year.

Parking is cheaperin Southport
Following recent letters about improvingCrosby Village and increased parking fees, I ampuzzled why parking charges in Southport areso much l o w e r.
Some charges are as low as £2.50 for wholeday, with easy access to shops and seafront.
The amount of weeds growing through thepavements in Crosby and the general shabbi-ness of the village do nothing to enhance itsappearance.
Surely, a quick fix would be to clean up thepavements and re-visit the car park chargep o l i c y.
Following in line with Southport's cleansingand car parking policy would go a long waytowards improving the village.

Tunnel unlikelydue to high costYour article about Sefton Labour wanting to build atunnel to provide additional road access to SeaforthDocks was interesting as this solution may not be arunner, due to the cost.
Labour are just positioning themselves to be able tosay they did propose an alternative and werei g n o re d .
But they may be backing the tunnel because theythink it is likely to happen and need to be on the win-ning side of the argument.
However, they see themselves winning either waybecause if the proposed surface road does get builton the Rimrose Valley Country Park then they havedistanced themselves from its unpopularity.
I notice there is little talk now about potential railsolutions to access the Port. Have rail options beendropped ? Were they ever seriously investigated?
Tony Robertson,By email
Locals need to supportMoor Lane shopsWe as local residents should do all we can to support ourlocal shopping area in Moor Lane.
We should do more than the council does for it, introdu-cing parking charges so someone who only wants to buy aloaf of bread has to pay 30p to park for five minutes - dis-graceful!
Previously it was free. They have also put up longer stay charges too. It's just money making scheme aimed at ripping off
motorists again.I used to pay sometimes to park there but not any more.I never use the car parks now, I willingly park up to half a
mile away from the shops and walk in.I recommend that others should follow my lead.I refuse to pay another penny in this council’s coffers.
Angry of Thornton,By email
Irresponsible dog ownerswould not buy a licenceI disagree with the letter writer whostated ‘We need a petition to bring backthe dog licence.’
It would always be the responsibleowners like myself who would pay itand not the irresponsible ones.
It frustrates me also that us respons-ible dog owners who get their dogschipped, de-flead, vaccinated andwormed etc pay vet’s bills for this butthe irresponsible dog owners who don'tdo this can now all of a sudden get it alldone for free at certain places becauseof the new law regarding microchip-ping.
Responsible owners do this as soon aspossible in case their dog goes missingand for health reasons.
Since the new microchip law has come
out I have not heard of anybody whohas been fined for not having their dogchipped.
They are never checked and the coun-cil has also cut back on dog wardens.
Anyone can buy a dog and keep it intheir homes.
Nobody comes to check or forces youto register your dog so, therefore, I don’tthink it would stop the irresponsible dogowners.
If the irresponsible dog owners can'tbe bothered to pick up their dog messit's doubtful they will pay £100 to thecost of the dog licence and it wouldn'tstop them getting a dog either.
Miss T Bone,Liverpool
We need to knowmore about surveyI was interested to read that 92% of residentswho responded to the public consultationabout speed limits in Little Crosby were inf a v o u r.
What does this actually mean?It could be that 25 responded and 23 were
in favour. It would be far more useful if you reported
such information with meaningful detail. How many people live in Little Crosby?
How many responded? If the council are going to spend £40,000 on
this it would seem reasonable for us to betold on what basis the decision was reached.

Children are acredit to school
Having just attended the leaving service ofYear Six at Valewood Primary, I am moved tosay what an excellent school this is.
The teachers and the support staff at thisschool are superb, and they have produced yetagain, an exceptional class of children thisy e a r.
The schools receiving these children inSeptember and the Borough of Sefton, have alot to thank Valewood for.
Finally, well done to the children for workingso hard, you are a credit to your parents andyour school.

Martin Mere news
Visit the web site www.wwt.org.uk/martinmere to fi nd out what’s on the reserve at the moment as well as all the upcoming events
Each year WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre take on two reserve placement students for one year who are studying conservation degrees, and they also undertake a project.
Amy Sherwin is one of these students and she has undertaken a project to set up regular bat surveys on the reserve. In the UK there are 17 different species of bat, all of which are vulnerable making it vital to monitor their activity to ensure their conservation. Bats are extremely diffi cult to survey due to their nocturnal activity therefore, detectors are required to detect the echolocation calls that bats produce in order to catch their prey. Historically, surveys done on the reserve have used heterodyne detectors, but these require experience in order to interpret the sounds being produced. The reserves newest bat detector gives us both visual and sound analysis of the bats echolocation calls, and even has to ability to automatically identify bat species making it much easier to carry out a basic survey. Amy said: “I am currently carrying out regular fi eld surveys in order to investigate where bat species are present on the reserve. Field surveys require walking a transect across the reserve and stopping at 12 specifi c locations while using the
detector to search for bat activity. The bat detector also produces a map at the end of the survey, which can be used to see what species are using particular habitat areas of the reserve. We have identifi ed the presence of fi ve different bat species currently using the site including; Soprano Pipistrelle, Common pipistrelle, Noclule, Daubentons and Brown Long eared Bats. This information along with the maps produced should give us a good idea of any specifi c management that might be required.” Every Friday night in August, Martin Mere is giving people the opportunity to come on a Bat and Barn Owl BBQ. It’s a 7pm start, till late, searching for bats and barn owls on the reserve after having a bite to eat. The event is £17 per person and you must book in advance by calling 01704 895181. WWT Martin Mere is open every day from 9.30am to 6pm and parking is free of charge. Situated off the A59, it is signposted from the M61, M58 and M6. The Centre is also accessible via the Southport to Manchester and the Liverpool to Preston line by train from Burscough Rail Stations. Visit the web site http://www.wwt.org.uk/martinmere/ to fi nd out what’s on all year round at Martin Mere and the other eight centres.

It’s not soeasy now toget a ‘ferr yI had occasion last week to travel across thewater to Birkenhead.
And since I was being met outside HamiltonSquare station, it obviously made sense to getthere via the Mersey Railway (as was).
The journey from Liverpool Central was quiteuneventful, but standing outside HamiltonSquare station waiting for my lift I had time toobserve the very much changed scene fromwhat I remember it not all that many years ago.
And it occurred to me that supposing therewas trouble with the trains, I actually had noclear idea of how I would have found an altern-ative route back to the 'Pool.
I know there are plenty of cross-river buses, and you can catch them from the bus station –which wasn't the case in my youth - but where, from were I was, was said bus station?
Of course I would probably quite easily havefound it and all would have been well.
But as a boy, and indeed as a quite old youngman, this would not have been any problem atall.
I could simply have followed my nose downhillto the Woodside ferry terminus and more or lesssimply have stepped on a boat and bingo! Liver-pool here I come.
As an aside, back then Woodside could veryaccurately have been described as a publictransport interchange (had that word beeninvented).
In one place you had a ferry service to Liver-pool every few minutes, a busy bus station withbuses to all points on the Wirral and out toChester, plus a mainline railway station fromwhich you could even get to London if such wasyour wish.
The British Rail station closed some years ago.The bus is now no more than a rather small
collection of bus shelters mainly serving just thelocal area. And the ferry?
Well, there IS still a ferry, kind of, though it isnow hourly and part of a very pleasant rivercruise, rather than a practical service to Liver-pool.
What, I wondered, has happened to us as apeople?
Oh yes, we now have a second Mersey tunnelto speed private cars on their cross-river jour-neys, and there is a perfectly good bus service ifyou happen to be in the right place.
And of course there is still the (normally) veryreliable Merseyrail train service – but then thatwas always there anyway.
As a boy I loved those Birkenhead ferries. They were run by Birkenhead Corporation
with civic pride, and best of all, as I rememberthem, they were genuine steamers, with long, narrow red and black funnels.
And to me, even then, they were obviously old.My favourite was 'Thurstaston' – I had no ideawho or what Thurstaston might have been orwas, but it certainly was a name to conjure with.
Also, Thurstaston and its sister ships departedevery few minutes – 'turn up and go'!
And because I was only a lad, I remember toothe introduction of the first, brand new, dieselferry – which I thought was smashing too, littlerealising that ultimately it spelled doom for mybeloved steamers.
But that's life I suppose. You can even get ‘wi-fi’ on buses and under-
ground stations now – so that's alright then.
Man who was riding bikequickly had drugs in pocket
A COURT has heard how a druguser aroused the suspicions ofpolice by riding his bike quickly.
Liverpool Community JusticeCentre heard on July 27 howofficers were travelling along Lin-acre Road on July 6 when theysaw a man on his bike.
Prosecutor, Alison Clarksonsaid: “They believed he was trav-elling at speed and so theyfollowed him and caused him tostop. He appeared to be nervousand two bags of cannabis were
found in his trouser pocket.”Solicitor Steve Charters said
that the 23 year old accused, whoonly had convictions for evadingrail fares on his record, was giv-ing the drugs up and trying tolook for work. Telling the magis-trates that a conviction for drugswould not help with that heasked for a conditional discharge.
Granting a conditional dis-charge for 12 months, themagistrates said: “The situationis pretty clear. As put forward byMr Charters, a conviction is notgoing to look good on yourrecords if you are going for ajob.”

ENTERTAINMENTPlay makes 'triumphantreturn to its spiritual home'
A Fistful Of CollarsRoyal Court Liverpool
SIX years after its firstouting, Fistful of Collars, written by Fred Lawless, writer of the theatre’s lastseven Christmas shows, made a triumphant returnto its spiritual home withthe script tightened underthe direction of Bob Eaton.
This is an old-fashionedknockabout farce set here in adry cleaning shop, and a won-derful set it was. So realistic Iwas tempted to leave myjacket there overnight.
Sisters Pat and Eileen(Lindzi Germain and EithneBrown) run the Dry Cleaningbusiness with the help ofLeona (Angela Simms) andthe simple Billy (LennyWood) but the landlord,Curtis Jones (Jack Abraham)keeps putting up the rent sothey devise a clever way to
increase the profits. Put upthe prices, attract a betterclass of customer and offerhigh class cleaning for theirexclusive garments then hireout them out for the eveningat exorbitant rates.
But everything that can gowrong does. A bag filled withthousands of pounds and aGlock gun; gangsters in theshop next door; a special con-stable (Alan Stocks) who ischloroformed, deprived of histrousers and ends up in thetumble dryer; a person with ahood over her hood purport-ing to be the kidnapped (don’task) Coleen Rooney and thel a n d l o rd ’s P.A., Sally (Suz-anne Collins), who spendsmost of the show wearing arevealing basque.
The first half took time towarm up but it built up to afrenzied climax by the inter-val and maintained its pacethroughout the second half.
The action was non-stopand, luckily, the timing wasspot on. Lindzi Germain willbe skeletal by the end of themonth’s run with all the
screaming and chasing shedid around the stage, justweeks after a similar role inThe Royal.
The professionalism of theactors plus the camaraderiebetween each of them, was adelight to behold, especiallyduring the singing scene, andthat communicated itself to
the audience who roared andclapped throughout, obvi-ously enjoying themselvestremendously. Not so sureabout Wayne Rooney though!
A Fistful of Collars runs untilAugust 20.
Star Rating: 7 out of 10.The Royal Court RepertoryCompany in fine form.

Howard’sFuneral Directors
Southport’s ONLY Independent Funeral Directors who are proud to be members of both trade associations
You, who make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideals. You, who gave the Divine Gift to forgive and forget all that is done to me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in their perpetual glory. To that end, and submitting to God’s Holy Will, I ask You
(mention your request).
This prayer must be said for three consecutive days. After the third day the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish the entire dialogue as a condition of having your request granted. J.A

MOTORSThe Land Rover Defender is deadand will not rise from the ashes ofB r i t a i n’s proud motoring historyTHE DEFENDER is dead. You might have heardrumours to the contrary, but there are nobillionaires plotting to put Britain’s favourite 4x4back into production. Land Rover’s said no, andthat’s that.
Which probably isn’t a bad thing. The Defenders Isee at car shows these days are custom made spe-cials blighted with ridiculously oversized alloys, interiors lined with leather and precious metals andsound systems so powerful they can be picked up ona seismograph. Hardly the four-wheeled farmer’sfriend I grew up with when I used to go green laningwith my dad in his Land Rover One Ten.
I suspect the rural set aren’t shedding the tears youmight expect because they’ve done what anyonedoes in the event of a vacuum; they’ve gone for thenext best thing instead. When I used to get draggedaround cattle auctions in Cumbria and Shropshire( d o n’t ask) the farmers who didn’t bring Defendersall had Isuzu Troopers parked outside. So it’s fittingthat it’s this minnow of a Japanese manufacturerthat’s done the most convincing job yet of rustlingup a Defender replacement.
The D-Max pick-up truck isn’t new, so chances arethe farming types will already know it’s hardyenough to drag itself out of a muddy field withoutcomplaint, but Isuzu's sent it off to boot camp any-way. It’s teamed up with a company called ArcticTrucks, who’ve insisted the D-Max watches nothingbut Bear Grylls documentaries and learns how tomake shelters out of twigs.
What’s emerged is a proper off-roader with raisedsuspension and big, knobbly tyres, the latter ofwhich can be inflated and deflated with an on-board pump. That means – and I know this is highlytopical at the beginning of August – you can essen-tially float on top of soft snow rather than gettingbogged down in it.
Admittedly having an extra six degrees ofapproach angle is probably a tad excessive for nav-igating supermarket car parks, but if you’re inCumbria or Yorkshire this winter and there’s arepeat of last year’s floods or a freak snowdrift you’lldefinitely want one of these to come to your res-cue.
At £33k for the double-cab version it’s not thecheapest way into a mud-plugging off-roader, butit’s still £11,000 less than a Land Rover Discoveryand roughly the same as a Discovery Sport. Neitherof which have massively raised ride heights and on-board compressors.
It’s sad the Defender’s gone, but it doesn’t meanit’s taken hard-as-nails off-roaders with it.

SPORTNorthern stay top after win butButterworth blast can’t save BootleNORTHERN remain two points clear at thetop of the Liverpool & District Cricket Com-petition Premier Division after a 72 run homewin against Wallasey, writes Glenn Wall-worth.
The hosts elected to bat and put 197 up onthe board thanks to Liam Grey who top scoredwith 73, whilst skipper James Cole, DavySmith, Justin Snow and Ryan Maddock all hittwenties, with Thomas Russ 5-60 and DannyBeaver 3-54 taking the bulk of the wickets.
In reply, in form spinner Tom Sephtonopened the bowling and his 6-70 helped bowlout the visitors for 125, with Andy Beaverunbeaten on 37.
Bootle are just two points ahead of Formbyafter a two wicket home defeat on Saturday.
Home captain Craig Prince chose to bat buthe and three other top order batsmen weregone with only 40 on the board.
Michael Farrell and Jackson Knight thenassumed control of proceedings with asuperb stand of 164, the former hitting 13boundaries in his 103.
Knight was undefeated on 77 when theinnings was declared at 221-5 in the 51st
over, leaving the opposition with whatturned out to be 58 in return.
Openers Tim Le Breton and 18 year oldMillfield schoolboy James Seward got theirteam’s reply off to a brisk start with 63 inside19 overs, and when Seward and Tym Craw-ford (51) shared in a third wicket partnershipof 98 it looked as Formby were in cruise con-trol with 30 needed to win in 15 overs.
Seward fell four runs short of his century, after which Formby appeared to suffer aDevon Loch moment as they spooked withthe winning post in sight.
Scott Butterworth captued a remarkablefive wickets in eight balls to send the totalplummeting to 208-8.
Gary Keedy and Elliot Ketteringham heldtheir nerve, however, and the visitorsbreathed a big sigh of relief as Keedy hit thewinning runs in the 52nd over and Formbyprevailed by 2 wickets despite Butterworth’sfine effort of 6-48 on Bootle’s behalf.
Bootle visit Wallasey on Saturday and thefollowing afternoon meet Northern at MoorPark in the semi-final of the Echo Cup (noonstart). Second placed Ormskirk made light
work of an eight wicket home win againstLytham, the visitors chose to bat and wereduly dismissed for 85 with former Ormskirkkeeper Gary Knight top scoring with 30,whilst the pick of the bowlers were SimonKerrigan 3-10 and Josh Bohannon 3-16. Inreply, 32 from opener Andy Baybutt plus twounbeaten knocks from Bohannon (28*) andIan Robinson (26*) eased the hosts to vic-tor y.
Ormskirk reached the semi-finals of theRoyal London Club Championship onSunday with a seven wicket win at BamfordFieldhouse, after restricting them to 172-6 in45 overs, with Lee Dale (66) and former Lan-cashire skipper Warren Hegg (33) scoringmost of their runs. In reply, Ian Robinson (23)and two unbeaten knocks from Josh Bohan-non (85*) and skipper Matty Glayzer (38*)led Ormskirk to victory. They will now travelto either Chester Broughton Hall or SouthNorthumberland in the semi final on August28.

In reply, an unbeaten 48 from RichieForsyth, 36 from Sean Vandome and 31not out from Richard Martin tookSefton to victory on 188-6, with DeclanDevine taking 4-44.
Ainsdale replaced Wigan in top spotafter a very comfortable eight wicketwin at Bull Hey.
Andy Barlow’s decision to put Wiganinto bat was fully justified as king of theswingers Mal Swift took his wicket tallypast 40 for the season with 5-22 off 18.2overs and Marty Farrell took 3-21 as thehosts were dismissed for just 74. In reply,Barlow carried his bat to finish unbeatenon 19 and Tom Jones cracked 31 as the

Remyca concede nineLITHERLAND Remyca's hopes ofreaching the Liverpool Senior Cupfinal were dashed after they fell to a9-0 defeat at home to Prescott Cables.
The semi-final was billed as thebiggest game in Remyca's history butthe match was ruined as a contest asearly as the second minute when thehome side's goalkeeper David Potterwas sent off for a bad tackle.
Without a back-up keeper on thebench, the gloves were passed to skip-
per Stephen King for the remainder ofthe match which turned out to be agruelling affair for Remyca.
Trailing 3-0 at half time, theRemyca defence collapsed in thesecond half to pave the way forCables to score six more – taking thescoreline to 9-0.
They will now face Everton in thefinal of the competition and Remycawill continue their pre-season sched-ule ahead of the upcoming season.

Bucks put fivegoals past Cityof LiverpoolBootle 5City of Liverpool 1
IT may have only been a pre-season friendlybut Bootle’s first half display against new boysCity of Liverpool, would have left Bucks bossJoe Doran delighted, writes Connor O’Neill.
The Bucks swept their ground tenants aside, with a ruthless first half performance whichsaw them race into a 4-0 lead at the interval, thanks to a Kieran Haligan hat-trick.
Bootle nearly went ahead when Ryan Coxwas brought down in the penalty area but Coxthne saw his spot kick saved by the Liverpoolke e p e r.
Bur Kieran Haligan then broke through thePurple’s defence - before calmly finishing intothe bottom corner of the net.
Five minutes later Haligan collecting hissecond pouncing on a lose clearance beforesuperbly chipping the keeper from 30-yardsout.
Front man Cox, then maade amends for hisearlier penalty miss with a neat finish beforeHaligan completed his hat-trick, with a superbs t r i ke .
A minute into the second half Liverpoolscored a well worked goal from Daley Woods.
But Cox completed the rout when he got hissecond after a defensive mix-up.
Bootle now turn their attention to Saturday’sFA Cup tie at Abbey Hey.
