Beautiful homes in bustling Trowbridge at the heart of spectacular West Wiltshire
Top: Sensory Gardens in Trowbridge Park Middle: Fore Street Market Place in Trowbridge Bottom: Caen Locks
NEWLAND PLACETROWBRIDGE
Newland Place is the latest new community of 79 new
homes on the southern side of the county town, by 3
times ‘Trowbridge Town Enhancement Award’ winner,
Newland Homes.
Something For Everyone
Our homes at Newland Place have been meticulously
designed to reflect the local vernacular and built
environment, described as “exemplar” by the Urban
Planning Officer during the development planning
stages. This is a reflection of our approach to our new
homes, particularly visible in Trowbridge where we’ve won
the town enhancement award three times through our
redevelopment schemes of the Ushers Brewery areas.
Rich Heritage
Trowbridge is a bustling town with a rich heritage, many
independent shops, the river Biss, Trowbridge town park,
a thriving arts scene plus a range of community facilities.
It is also a convenient base for exploring the many walks
and trails in the region, including the site of the renowned
White Horse carved onto the hillside near Westbury.
Historic Wiltshire
A little further afield are the world heritage sites of
Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles as well as the
stately home of Longleat and Stourhead House and
Gardens to the south and Bowood House to the north.
The ruins of Farleigh Hungerford castle, the unique Roman
City of Bath, and the National Trust village of Lacock with
impressive abbey and fascinating museum of photography
are all within easy reach. A few miles to the east is the
famous Caen Hill flight of locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal
leading into the interesting market town of Devizes.
Transport Links
Thanks to excellent transport links, Bristol, Bath and
Swindon are commutable and Trowbridge Station provides
a rail service to Bristol Temple Meads (32mins), Swindon
(36mins) and London Paddington (just under 2 hours).

The legacy of a proud civic heritage sits alongside superb shopping options and fabulous flora and festivals
Ancient Roots
Trowbridge has an ancient history, having been first
mentioned in the Domesday Book (c.1086) and was
headquarters for one of the 25 barons - Henry de Bohun
- who were to enforce the Magna Carta (c.1215).
The de Bohun family did much to shape and develop the
town in the 12th century including laying out the market
place and building the first St James Church.
Industrial Development
Weaving has taken place in the town for over a thousand
years, at one point even rivalling the key industrial towns
of the north of England, and the woollen industry left a
rich architectural legacy as many of the opulent houses of
the mill owners and cloth merchants survive today.
By the late 19th century other industries also came to the
fore including bedding, food production and brewing –
most notably with Ushers at Trowbridge, which enjoyed
an important presence in the town from the mid 1800s,
and more latterly lovingly repurposed and redeveloped as
housing by Newland Homes.
Variety of Shopping Options
Despite its significant heritage, Trowbridge is still
firmly rooted in the present. Historic buildings, with the
impressive 1889 Town Hall as the centrepiece, preside
over thriving independent shops and recognisable high
street retailers.
Gateway Shopping (Argos, Asda, Boots, Next and New
Look), Castle Place Shopping (Market Hall and independent
shops and stalls) and St Stephen’s Place (Odeon cinema
and a choice of restaurants) offer a host of retail options
in the centre of town.
Trowbridge, like many towns in the county, also hosts a
regular weekly market (on Wednesdays) with local stalls
and traders.
Green Outdoors
Trowbridge is also blessed with excellent outdoor
space: The town park, just behind the Town Hall boasts
some beautiful grassy spaces, children’s play areas and
sports facilities.
The Sensory Garden takes you to a nature trail leading
to Biss Meadows Country Park, which follows the river
Biss to open countryside where you might see all sorts of
butterflies, bird and bees. The park is also home to many
live events throughout the year including kids camps,
soccer schools and live music while the new Civic Centre
nearby also hosts a wide variety of entertainment for all
ages including music, comedy, theatre and festivals.
Meanwhile, just a mile from Newland Place you’ll
find Southwick Country Park: 150 acres of old farmland
offering a fantastic haven for flora and fauna and a
network of pathways running through fields and woods
- a popular spot for dog walkers, runners and those with
energetic children.
Education
There are a couple of excellent Primary schools,
Holbrook and The Grove (both OfSted rated Good),
less than a mile from Newland Place and several other
options in the Trowbridge area. The nearest Secondary
is Clarendon Academy but others include The John
of Gaunt School, Larkrise School and Tumblewood
Community School.

2. Paragliding over Westbury White Horse
3. Wildlife by the river

Built on lasting relationships
Newland Homes has enjoyed a long association with Trowbridge and is proud to have been recognised
by the town council for their work in transforming and enhancing the local community.
Newland Homes at Trowbridge – building our future together
The Conigre, Ushers Brewery and Brewery Quarter
When the Ushers Brewery in Trowbridge closed
its doors in 2003, after 180 years in the town, its
historic landmark offices at the end of Conigre
and Manvers were sold. Newland Homes later
secured the site and was able to retain the
historic façade through the dedication of its
team and this unique piece of social fabric and
history of Trowbridge was retained for posterity.
A few years later Newland Homes acquired
Ushers’ former bottling plant on nearby
Union Street, again working successfully with
councillors, the local community and planning
professionals to deliver another exceptionally
high quality housing scheme.
Brewery Quarter is alive with references to the
iconic brewer, from cast bronze bottle-tops
set into the pavement, to slate “diamonds”
engraved with all the Ushers’ brews. But
crowning these and left to be discovered by the
most curious, the “Ushers Poem” is a faithful
reproduction engraved in oak of the centenary
speech delivered by T C Usher in May 1924 to 500
tenants at the Town Hall, Trowbridge.

The Trowbridge Town Enhancement Award is presented annually, only
if there is a suitably deserving development “that most enhances
the town of Trowbridge” and has been awarded to Newland Homes for an
unprecedented three times.

Whilst Newland Homes continues to successfully develop in towns, villages and cities across the south west, there is undoubtedly a special ingredient with Trowbridge - a mutual respect for history coupled with a desire to look forward, that keeps Newland Homes and Trowbridge working together to create new homes and spaces that are instantly Trowbridge and no other place.
We think about more than just the fixtures and fittings at
Newland Homes. We apply our considerate, conscientious and
crafted approach across all aspects of design and construction.
Here are just some of the ways we do this...
Helping you save energy and moneyOur homes are designed with energy efficiency and therefore cost-saving in mind.
