Willowbrook Homes Newsletter President's Report - Mike Sarno News & Notices Summer 2016 New Neighbors Our contracts with both Deffenbaugh and Green Lawn are due to expire at the end of the year. The Board has reached an agreement with Green Lawn to extend the current contract another five years with a minimal in- crease in price. The Board also solicit- ed bids from all of the companies offer- ing trash pickup and disposal services in our area and received three with the remainder of the companies declining to bid. The Board has decided to re- new the Deffenbaugh contract for a variety of reasons including price (they were the low bidder) and their willing- ness to work with us on the size of the bins they require. The other bidders require residents to utilize 95-gallon bins only for both trash and recyclables. Our 6-year contract with Don Nylund Painting remains in effect and the Board has approved a minor increase in the cost of painting each home for the remaining three years. (The current contract contains a provision for reevaluating the pricing after three years.) I believe this is very good news since it means the key contributors to our re- curring monthly expenses will not in- crease significantly over the next few years. The Board wants to recognize the ef- forts of Dan Wilder in negotiating the extension with Green Lawn and solicit- ing and evaluating the bids from the various trash companies as well as Hank Bauer’s assistance in reaching the agreement with Don Nylund Painting. Willowbrook Homes Garden Club - Joyce Murray
The Willowbrook Home and Garden Club continues to look forward to interesting and informative programs. In April
we toured the Designers' Showhouse which has become an annual visit followed by lunch at a local restaurant; pro-
gram hosted by Annette Szulc and Jan Holmberg.
The month of May found us at Red Cedar Gardens, program planned by
Karen Lawrence, learning the correct way to pot our flowers. It's never
too late to learn a tip or two. We took sack lunches and ate them under
Red Cedar's beautiful gazebo and enjoyed their gardens.
The metamorphosis of
the butterfly was ex-
plained by Vicki Siebs in
her home with Tanya
Channell helping with the
hosting duties. This was
most informative resulting
in an eagerness to pro-
vide more of a habitat for the butterflies' migration.
Due to the monument being worked on at the 142nd Street entrance,
we were late in providing flowers for the urn on the south side. If a drip
line can be provided for the north side, flowers will "bloom" there as
well.
If you would like to join in the fun, please let me know. We meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:00am.

Lakes and Streams - Dan Wilder
The lakes and steams in Willowbrook are in pretty good shape this year with the usual weed growth in all three
ponds. We are treating the ponds with chemicals to keep the weed growth to a minimum but it is a never ending bat-
tle. We hired someone to remove the multiple islands we had popping up in ponds two and three and we have been
able to control the island issue since we have not had any rain to make additional islands. We had someone damage
our walking bridge on the ponds and Dan Wilder fixed the bridge during the first week in July.
We still have ducks in the ponds and they are fun to watch playing in the water. Our turtle population isn't to bad this
year so we lost fewer baby ducks this year to the snapping turtles.
We hope you have a great summer and we will talk to you again in the Fall Newsletter.
Pool Committee - Dennis Lemons
So far this year 90 homes in Willowbrook have checked out a pool key! The Wednesday Happy Hour has been a big success with high attendance and many people using the pool to cool off while visiting with neighbors. We had to make a minor adjustment in the pool gate and replace the spa motor in July, but otherwise everything has been working well. We continue to receive complements from residents on the new furniture and flower pots.
Annual Fall Picnic - Karen Lawrence
SAVE THE DATE: the 4th annual Willowbrook Fall Party will be a catered lunch on Sunday September 25 at the
pool. More information will follow.

Brown Patches in Your Lawn?
During this time of year, brown patches might appear in your grass. If you do not see brown patches in your lawn, your
lawn is fine. On the other hand if you do see these patches, there is a chance that you are seeing the disease Rhi-
zoctonia Brown Patch. It appears as blighted or browning grass as the disease begins to affect the lawn. The disease
will spread as long as conditions are favorable. Recent weather conditions have been favorable for this type of dis-
ease as night time temperatures have been frequently over 60-70 degrees with high humidity days and a wet spring.
Increased moisture from recent rainfall helps induce this problem.
Several fungicides are labeled for control of brown patch on tall fescue. Before applying a fungicide, consider wheth-
er the application is necessary. In most cases, brown patch causes temporary injury to the lawn. However, research
indicates that the turf often fully recovers from blighting after two to four weeks without fungicide treatments. Never-
theless, initial damage from the brown patch disease is unsightly and often unacceptable to some homeowners.
