COUNCILLOR REPORT

Councillor Report February

2016

The 2016 Regional Municipality

of Wood Buffalo budget was

passed by Council. There is

ongoing funding for Capital

Projects in Ward 4 which include:

Rural Water and Sewer - Anzac Firehall - Janvier

(Indoor Ice Rink) Building - Conklin Multi-plex -

Conklin Streetlight Improvements

Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo staff met with the Willow Lake Community Association in January to provide information from Engineering on rural water and sewer servicing, south east supply line, and the construction of the new fire hall. An update on the responsible pet ownership bylaw was also provided. An open house will be held in Anzac on February 24, 2016 for residents of Gregoire Lake Estates and Anzac wanting updates on the projects. RMWB staff will also be in Conklin on February 18 for an open house. The open house will update the residents on ongoing RMWB projects. In reviewing the Weekly Executive update provided to Council I noticed that RCMP Support/Bylaw Officers are continually patrolling Gregoire Lake Estates, Anzac, Janvier and Conklin. In January Community policing enjoyed floor hockey matches with students in Conklin, and attended and oversaw the Janvier Cadet program. The tree clearing taking place on Cheecham Drive is for the new fire hall in Anzac. The test drilling going on in Anzac is being used to take samples as part of a geotechnical survey. Bird Construction mobilized at the site of the Conklin multi-plex in December. Clearing and grubbing work began immediately. The continuing plan is for piling and excavation as the clearing and grubbing moves away from the building footprint. Local rural business owners and I met with MLA Tany Yao. We asked our MLA to discuss with the provincial government to make an amendment so that the rural

businesses pay a similar municipal rate in taxes as the urban in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Mayor Blake is meeting with the Minister of Municipal Affairs on January 27th. One of the priority topics is the local rural business tax. The Minister of Municipal Affairs, Danielle Larivee has tentatively set the date of February 11th to visit Fort McMurray and meet with Mayor and Council. This will give me another opportunity to push the order in Council that the rural hamlets be taxed similar to the urban service area. I had the opportunity to tour Camp Yogi this month and had a great time. I even tried snowshoeing. We had nice fires outside the building. Unfortunately the skies were uncooperative so were unable to see the northern lights. I want to give a big thank you to the team from Adventure Borealis Ltd for giving us a very nice experience. The team is all local engaged community members. Nexen personnel called the Office of the Mayor and me shortly after the very unfortunate explosion at their plant site. Mayor Blake and I also met with Nexen Sr. leadership President & CEO Fang Zhi, Sr. VP Canadian Oil & Gas Ron Bailey and Community Relations, Cindy Amerongen. Fang Zhi expressed deep sorrow and regret for the death of a member of the Nexen family and the serious injuries to a second employee. Fang Zhi expressed his thanks for the quick response of the RMWB Emergency Response crew and for the ongoing support from the municipality. We discussed our mutual aid agreement, and respectful ways for Nexen to acknowledge the deep impact this tragedy has upon the families, employees, contractors and communities. Ron Bailey told us about the supports for the families for their immediate and future needs as well as the counseling services that have been offered to employees and contractors. Nexen leaders promised to keep the RMWB and the Anzac community notified of future business continuity plans. For any good deeds or concerns please e-mail [email protected] or telephone 780-334-0516.

COMMUNITY CORNER

Notice of Anzac Recreation and Social Society

Annual General Meeting

Monday February 29 @ 7:00 pm Anzac Community Hall

Re-election will be held for 3 positions.

Call Patty @ 780-334-2424 or email [email protected] for more information.

2016 Garbage Collection Please remove garbage bins off the road or shoulder after your bins have been emptied, pull them back onto your property. They are in the way of service and public vehicles. Household waste (black) will be emptied every week. Recycling Bins (light blue & dark blue) will be emptied alternate weeks.

Important tips to ensure your recyclables and waste are picked up

1. Put all your recyclables into the appropriate recycling bin — and all your waste in your

black waste bin. Recyclables or waste placed on the ground by your bins will not be

picked up.

2. Sort your recyclables into the correct recycling bin. Cardboard and paper go in the light

blue recycling bin. Plastics, metal and non-glass drink containers go in the dark blue

recycling bin. Recycling bins that contain incorrect material will not be picked up.

3. Put your bins out by 7:30 a.m. Collection trucks will not return later in the day to

empty bins that missed pickup.
