By early afternoon, the crew was eating lunch, looked up and Thompson was at the bottom of the ramp, hands raised above his head, and he said, “I made it.” “That’s why we do it,” said Bill Biergans of Delta Township, a part of Brown’s crew for most of the 16 years they have been building ramps. Brown, of Williamston, who retired from his “real job” as a middle school science teacher in the Okemos Public Schools 20 years ago, knew from an early age, when he was 8 years old and the car- penters building his par- ents’ house let him help drive nails, that he liked building things and work- ing with wood. Many years later, after taking a woodworking class at LCC, he began working with Habitat building houses, but in 1990 shifted to spending most of his time on adap- tations to existing houses. “I was the youngest member,” Brown said. “One of the guys asked me one afternoon if I’d like to go work on a porch with him, and that was the beginning of the fix-up program.” And he has been there since, leaving his finger- prints on 499 of the 500 ramps Habitat has built in the area. “I was sick one day,” he said, explaining the one day he wasn’t able to par- ticipate. The Williamston Food Bank recently received notice that three of the four ladieswho regularly pack the food sacks are retiring, Jane Pease, Martha Ford and HelenPartridge. Pictured (l. to r.) Ginny Kiser, Jane Pease, Helen Partridge and Martha Ford.According to Food Bank Co-Director Jill Cutshaw, these three ladies represent a totalof almost 60 years of volunteering as packers at the Food Bank. “Jane Pease startedover 25 years ago,” said Cutshaw,” and Martha and Helen have both packed forabout 17 years.” Jane Pease started volunteering when the Food Bank served about12 families a month out of a church basement, now the Food Bank serves about100 families a month out of the Community Center. While perfecting the art of fast, efficient, packing, these four ladies became life-long friends. “They will all be greatlymissed by everyone at the Food Bank,” said Cutshaw, “and this whole communityowes them a huge debt of thanks.” The fourth member of the team, Ginny Kiser, has agreed to stay on awhile, and Jane Pease has agreed to continue as Food Banktreasurer. WILLIAMSTON — OnFriday, July 8 at noon, Mr.B and the Joy Box Expresswill be stopping to performat Williamston’s Bandshellin McCormick Park. Theywill play boogie-woogiemusic for approximately 90minutes. The concert, spon-sored by the WilliamstonTheatre, is free and open tothe public.

Mr. B’s Joybox Expressis a project designed toraise awareness and fund-ing for groups dedicated toimproving the health andwell being of children, especially groups provid-ing children access to artsand athletics programs. Theheart of Mr. B’s JoyboxExpress is a custom madetrike that nestles a352-pound piano. Two“dummy hubs” at the rearof the trike allow two“pusher” bikes to attachthemselves. In this configu-ration the vehicle supportsthree riders and is fourfeet wide and 16 feet long.

Blues and boogie-woogiepianist Mr. B and fellowmusicians conduct bicycletours, with all instrumentsin tow (including guitarwith solar-powered ampli-fier, string bass, and drumkit-in-a-suitcase), perform-ing benefit concerts andpromoting charitable givingfor partner organizationsalong the route.

Blues and boogie-woogiepianist Mark Lincoln Braun(Mr. B) has become oneof the premiere purveyorsof a vanishing art. Havinglearned his craft first-handfrom the early masters, heis a rare living link to thefirst generation of blues andboogie pianists. Steeped inthe rich legacy of this tre-mendously exciting music,Mr. B learned directly fromblues and boogie legendslike Little Brother Mont-gomery, Boogie WoogieRed, and Blind John Davis. In demand for both educa-tional programs and con-cert performances, he has

performed coast to coastand throughout Europe,Canada, Mexico and SouthAmerica. In 2002 he was aguest artist at the IrvingS. Gilmore InternationalKeyboard Festival. He isalso the organizer of theannual Mr. B’s Blues andBoogie Piano Celebrationthat attracts major figuresin the blues and jazz pianoworld to Ann Arbor forcollaborative performanceswith Mr. B.

The Williamston Theatreis located in downtown Wil-liamston (exit 117 off ofI-96) just south of GrandRiver Ave. Informationabout the company and thefinal show of the 2010-2011season, the world premiereof Joseph Zettelmaier’s“And The Creek Don’tRise,” are available onlineat www.williamstontheatre.org or by calling (517)655-SHOW (7469).

From 1970-1976, he served in the Air National Guard andbegan his career with Consumers Energy in Jackson, Michi-gan in 1971. He was proud of his 40 years of service at hisjob.

Raising his three children, Kevin, Paul, and Jessica in Ma-son, Michigan was the highlight of his life. He enjoyedcoaching his boys while playing on several fast-pitch softballteams with brothers, Chris and Craig. The highlight of hissoftball career was catching for his father on the 1972 StateChampionship team.
