The month of May brings warmer weather, the Indianapolis 500, and the end of the school year. Congratulations to the Class of 2016! On Sunday, June 5th, at 1:00 PM, William Henry Harrison High School will graduate 379 students from the Class of 2016. Once again, this senior class has succeeded in numerous ways, including academic awards, scholarship recognition, athletic notoriety, musical accomplishments, and citizenship excellence. Valedictorian candidates are Ashton Bitters, Caroline Blanchard, Nikhil Carneiro, Dylan Frohberg, Kadie Hawks, Melinda Liu, Caroline Loftus, and Arantxa Recarte.

Final plans beyond high school are falling into place for our graduates. As one would expect, an extremely high percentage of our graduates are planning to attend either a two - year or four - year college, university, or trade school. We also have students joining various branches of our military and still others who have jobs lined up to begin shortly after graduation.

As principal, I see countless examples each day of our hard - working students combining efforts with dedicated parents and our excellent teachers as we strive for success together. These combined efforts are what make our students, and our school, successful. It gives me great pride to see our students achieving at such a high level on a regular basis.

As a reminder, the final day of the school year for students is currently scheduled to be Friday, May 20th. Thank you for your support in making this school year a great one thus far!

Dreams2016 Harrison Teacher of the Year Harrison High School and the Raider community congratulate the energetic Mr. Craig Smiley, the 2016 Harrison Teacher of the Year! Mr. Smiley teaches physics at HHS and is known among students and staff as a positive and enthusiastic teacher. Senior Andrew Ross commented, “Mr. Smiley makes a difficult class engaging, and he is able to connect physics to real life.” Students Chris Carter and Katie Knox agreed that Mr. Smiley is a great teacher who tells great stories. Carter mentioned a story Mr. Smiley tells about an incident with a pancake to help explain free-falling. It is obvious to students that Mr. Smiley wants his students to understand the difficult material offered in his classes. Senior Katie Knox greatly appreciates Mr. Smiley’s dedication: “He makes time for his students who need more help. He will go over tests and help with homework if you want that extra help. He wants you to actually understand the material.”

Mr. Smiley is known for his energetic announcements over the intercom system. At the end of the school day, Mr. Smiley has been known to sprint down to the office to make any announcements regarding the many activities he leads. His genuine care and appreciation for students is demonstrated by his commitment to students outside of the classroom just as much as in the classroom. Mr. Smiley puts together the annual senior ski trip and loves to bring students together in Ultimate Frisbee. He assists with Live from Graff and encourages students through FCA. Other HHS teachers explain that his involvement, energy, and genuine care causes students to simply gravitate towards him; he is positive, friendly, and the students love him! Congratulations, Mr. Smiley, on being named the 2016 Harrison Teacher of the Year!

2016 Riley Champion for Children We are proud to share that the 2016 Riley Champion for Children is TSC’s very own 504 Coordinator, Bonnie Crawford. Bonnie has committed her career to working with students who need additional support in order to achieve success. She served HHS as a teacher, counselor, and student council advisor where she was instrumental in developing Hoops for Hope, a program that has raised over $200,000 for families with great medical expenses and that finances one Make-A-Wish dream each year for a local child. Bonnie has done and continues to do wonderful things for the corporation and the community. Bonnie was honored at a reception on April 27 in West Lafayette. Congratulations, Mrs. Crawford!

Summer School InfoTippecanoe School Corporation is piloting a new schedule for the 2016 high school summer school program. This schedule will still consist of two sessions, allowing students to complete the same amount of courses/credits. However, each session will be completed in 3 weeks this year (Session 1: June 6 - 24 and Session 2: June 27 - July 18). In order to compensate for the reduced amount of days, the length of each day will run from 7:30 AM until 12:30 PM. This schedule exactly matches the length in minutes of a traditional semester course during the regular school year. This change will permit more flexibility for families as well as for the maintenance staff of our TSC buildings. The new schedule will be evaluated at the end for effectiveness of each session in order to determine continuation of the schedule for future summers. TSC looks forward to another successful high school summer school program!

Yearbook NewsThe 2016 Prophet yearbook is nearly complete! If you haven’t ordered your copy yet, be sure to do so soon. Yearbooks are $70 from April 15-May 30, 2016. Only a few extras will be ordered. You may not get one if you wait until August! Order forms are available under the “Yearbook Info” tab on the HHS website or from Mrs. McClure’s teacher web page.

ATTENTION: CORRECTIONThere will NOT be a 2016 yearbook distribution event during Raider Rally in August. Keep an eye on Mrs. McClure’s TSC teacher web page for information regarding 2016 yearbook distribution prior to the start of the 2016-2017 school year in August.

2016 yearbooks ordered by returning students will be available for pick up during the school day starting on Monday, August 29, 2016. Yearbooks can be picked up in the yearbook room (F110) right after school or by request through the yearbook adviser, Jodi McClure. Mrs. McClure can be contacted by phone at 765-463-3511 or by email at [email protected].

All 2016 seniors and parents: Information regarding delivery for the 2016 yearbook prior to the start of the school year in August will be posted on Mrs. McClure’s TSC teacher web page. Beginning on Monday, August 29, 2016, graduates’ yearbooks will be available for pick up in the HHS Main Office. If a graduate will be out of town in August, a parent or sibling may pick up the yearbook. Graduates who will not be able to pick up the book from HHS but will have a U.S. address in August may request book shipping for $15. Please make the check payable to “Harrison Yearbook” and send it to the school, ATTN: Adviser Jodi McClure.

Academic Superbowl Continues to State CompetitionThe Harrison Academic Superbowl Team has continued its history of success this year. At the NCC conference competition, which was held at Marion on March 15th, Harrison took third place in Social Studies; second place in Fine Arts and Math; and first place in English, Science, and Interdisciplinary. The Harrison team was the NCC conference champion, and Harrison was awarded the traveling plaque. At the area competition, which was held in Attica on April 19th, the team placed 2nd in Interdisciplinary and Fine Arts and placed first in English, Science, Social Studies, and Math. In the last five years, Harrison has had fifteen state qualifying teams, and three of them have gone on to become state champions. This year, Science is going to the state competition at Purdue University on May 7th. Great job to these knowledgeable Raiders!

Since I am currently in EMT classes, I hope to get a job as an EMT. In a couple of years, I hope to become a paramedic. –Allen Gould

Dreams A Night to Remember On April 16th, Harrison students, dressed in their best, gathered together for a night full of music, dancing, and so many memories. The ladies were absolutely stunning in their gowns, and the gentlemen looked sharp in their tuxes. This Suit and Tie event allowed students to step away from their studies for one fantastic celebration before they step out of Harrison. Patrick Sullivan was crowned prom king, and Rosalie Stanley was chosen as prom queen. A big thanks to Mrs. Lauren Klemme and Mrs. Jodi McClure for leading the organization of prom and after prom activities!

Vocal Jazz Choir has Much to Sing AboutCongratulations to the Harrison Vocal Jazz Choir for making the Indiana State School Music Association’s Jazz State Finals. The ensemble was one of eight groups to perform at the event on March 18th! Great job, ladies!

Chasing RainbowsThe 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year, Ms. Kathy Nimmer, was recently chosen by the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) as the recipient of the 2016 Chasing Rainbows Award. Country singer Dolly Parton presents the Chasing Rainbows award each year to an outstanding educator who has overcome personal obstacles on the journey to becoming an exemplary teacher. Congratulations, Ms. Nimmer!

Valedictorian Candidates Have Been Named Eight Harrison seniors are the current valedictorian candidates for the class of 2016. Each of these students is on track to complete the requirements for an Academic Honors Diploma with Distinction and currently holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The candidates include Ashton Bitters, Caroline Blanchard, Nikhil Carneiro, Dylan Frohberg, Kadie Hawks, Melinda Liu, Caroline Loftus, and Arantxa Recarte. Congratulations and good luck to these outstanding students as they complete the remainder of their high school careers.

Nikhil Carneiro - Son of Mervyn and Smita CarneiroWill pursue a degree in engineering at Purdue University.“My favorite memory of Harrison is going to World Championships for robotics.”

Dylan Frohberg - Son of David and Deb FrohbergLooks forward to pursuing a major in computer science. “My two favorite pastimes are reading and computer programming; I do both a lot and enjoy both equally.”

Kadie Hawks - Daughter of Bret and DeEtta HawksPlans to play volleyball at the University of Indianapolis while pursuing a degree in sports management. “My favorite memory of HHS would have to be the Champions Together game. All of the hard work that the Athletic Leadership Council put into the game paid off.”

Melinda Liu - Daughter of Chuanhai Liu and Shu HuoPlans to attend UCLA where she will focus her studies on biochemistry.“The achievement I am most proud of is scoring a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam as a freshman.”

Caroline Loftus - Daughter of Barry and Kim LoftusPlans to attend Grinnell College in Iowa where she will study biology.“My favorite memory of HHS is the trip I took to England with the HHS band.”

Arantxa Recarte - Daughter of Fermin and Denise RecartePlans to attend Indiana University where she will study foreign language and political science.Her advice to future Raiders: “Do not be afraid to ask questions.”

Graduation is Almost HereCommencement for the class of 2016 will take place at the Elliott Hall of Music on Sunday, June 5th, at 1 PM. Doors open to the public at 12:30 PM, and seating is unlimited. Any student who plans to participate needs to attend rehearsal at 12:45 PM on Friday, June 3rd, at Elliott Hall of Music. Students should enter through the east entrance and should plan about 90 minutes for rehearsal. On graduation day, students should plan to arrive at 12:15 PM at the west entrance to begin lining up. All financial obligations to TSC must be taken care of prior to graduation. Any student who still needs to order or pay for a cap and gown needs to contact Doug Kingsley immediately by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 574-583-3420. Harrison Student Fashion Designers are Ending the Year StrongThe 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition proved to be quite successful for student designers in the Harrison Fashion Program. For the first time ever, Harrison students presented work in this competition. Baylee Biancofiori received a Gold Key, Gabby Coors and Maya Foster each received a Silver Key, and Emily Romanovich was recognized as an Honorable Mention. Emily was also recently recognized by the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce Career and Technical Awards for her work in fashion.

The 2016 Wish Gala featured 18 looks from Harrison student designers. Those designers who presented their work on the runway were Grace Woodard, Kara Fernung, Maya Foster, Janie Zeh, Gabby Coors, Emily Romanovich, Esther Rostagno, Lexi Harris, Cheyanne Morris, Baylee Biancofiori, Madi Campbell, Riley Huber, Cyrus Payne, and Sara Fultz. The Harrison designers donated $1000.00 with the entire event raising $14,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Congratulations to all the design students for their outstanding work!

Mouths Water for Mascot ManiaEach year, Walt’s Other Pub hosts the Mascot Mania competition. Local high schools develop a sandwich to add to the pub’s menu. The sandwiches remain on the menu for a year, and 5% of the profit goes back to the school to be put towards a scholarship for those looking to pursue culinary arts. At the end of each year, a school is named the winner based on total sales. While Harrison did not win the 2015-2016 competition, Harrison celebrates their first win over McCutcheon High School.

Mrs. Jami Mosley’s culinary arts students recently completed their in-class competition and voted for the sandwich to represent Harrison on the 2016-2017 pub menu. The Raider Ring Burger is a quarter pound, ground chuck patty topped with smoked gouda and a bacon-wrapped, candied onion ring. This burger is served on Texas toast smothered in sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. Walt’s Other Pub plans to have this mouth-watering burger on the menu by June 1st. Ordering the Raider Ring Burger is an easy and delicious way to support Harrison and show your Raider pride!

Live from GraffThe 13th annual Live from Graff took place on April 22nd, and it was a huge success once again. The music was fantastic with over 15 acts, including full bands, piano players, saxophone players and some amazing singers. More than 600 pounds of canned food were collected and donated to Food Finders, and ticket sale money was donated to charity. A huge thank you to all those involved in putting on this year’s concert and also to all of those who came out and supported Live from Graff! See you all next year for the 14th annual Graff!

Color Run Celebrates LifeSpring is often a time of celebration and renewal. On April 30th, NHS members held an HHS Color Run in loving memory of Billy Frost. Billy was a member of Mrs. Clouse’s Life Skills class and was scheduled to graduate in May of 2016. The 5K was a celebration of Billy’s life; he was such a fun and upbeat student. During the celebration of Billy’s life and the positive impact he had on all those who knew him, orange and blue could be seen on participants throughout the route as faculty, staff, students, and community members supported the highly successful service project. HHS senior Nicole Martin said, “There are so many great things about Harrison, but the one thing that always stands out is the ability to bring together the student body with the community to raise money for a good cause.” Proceeds from the run will go toward the purchase of specialized technology and equipment for students in the Life Skills classroom. Catherine Staszewski and Kim Howat, NHS advisors, commented, “We are honored to be a part of such a compassionate group of students, faculty, staff, and community members. Our HHS family is strong, vibrant, and above all, committed to bettering the lives of others.”

KeyettesThe Keyettes participated in Relay for Life at Purdue University on Friday, April 8. Our team raised $1512, and our silent auction basket – For Chocolate Lovers – raised an additional $75. Great job to the Keyettes!

Robotics Team Goes to World’s ChampionshipCongratulations to the members and supporters of the Harrison Boiler Robotics FIRST Team 1747. This has been an exceptionally exciting season for Harrison Boiler Robotics, William Henry Harrison High School’s robotics team.

The robotics team started the season at the Tippecanoe Event. This event was special as it was hosted by HHS and run by the HHS team. There, after two days of rigorous competition, the Raiders finished on the winning alliance. The team also brought home the Entrepreneurship Award which celebrates a team’s exemplary business-based structure.

Their next stop was the Walker Warren Event. After another exciting weekend of competition, the team finished as a semi-finalist. Even greater than their robot success, the Chairman’s Award was awarded to Harrison Boiler Robotics. The team took home gold not only for promoting science, technology, engineering, and math in the community, but for serving as a role model for all other robotics teams to emulate.

Following Warren, the team spent their spring break at the Perry Meridian District Event. The Raiders showed off their stellar robot, and for their robot’s performance and its student-programmed abilities, the team brought home the Innovation in Control Award, the team’s first robot-based award in history. After two days of stiff competition, again the team came out on top as part of the winning alliance.

The team competed in the State Championship in Kokomo against 30 of the top teams in the state, placing 7th after a day and a half of qualifying rounds and going 10 wins and 2 losses. They became the 5th seed alliance captain, picking to work with FRC Team 461, Westside Boiler Invasion, and FRC Team 3176, Purple Precision, from Brownsburg. This alliance defeated the 4th seed alliance in the quarter finals of the elimination rounds, then lost to the 1st seed alliance. They went on to win the State Entrepreneurship Award. Based upon their robot’s competition at the district events and the state championship as well as their team awards, they placed 5th in the state, which qualified them to participate in the World’s Championship in Saint Louis, Missouri. Great job to the robotics team for all of your successes throughout these 5 events!

German Students Create Film Harrison High School fourth year German students will be representing the Raiders at the Indiana University German Theater Project film festival. Their film, an adapted version of the German fairy tale “Frau Holle” was accepted by a committee to be shown at the festival and is in the running for prizes, including best acting and best use of German. Students and their teachers will have the opportunity to travel to IU-Bloomington’s campus for a screening. Students will be participating in workshops to improve their German and acting skills.

This talented group won an honorable mention in the best adaptive script category. Each student received a certificate and a book, and Mrs. Beck received a board game to use in the classroom. The winning submission is viewable at http://www.indiana.edu/~german/theaterproject/winners.php.

Adventures in Greece: During Spring Break 2016, 18 Harrison students along with 8 faculty/staff and adults traveled throughout Italy and Greece on a one-of-a-kind trip. The group began their adventure in Rome with the Roman Forum and the Vatican, then traveled to Naples, cruised around the Island of Capri, explored Sorrento, marveled at the ancient city of Pompeii, ferried across the Ionian Sea to Greece, experienced amazing Delphi, relished the history of the Acropolis, and sailed around the Greek Islands. The group walked close to 79 miles over the course of the trip, ate way too much food, but wouldn’t have traded the experience.

A Piece of Harrison is Going to Germany: Harrison is proud to announce that the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) has selected Aleczander (Zan) Santon to travel to Germany for an academic year. Zan will be traveling with approximately 250 United States high school students from across the country as they each spend a year in Germany. Each student will live with a German host family and will study at a German high school. They will have the opportunity to meet with government officials and explore different cities. To be selected for such a great opportunity, Zan had to complete a resume, application, and essays. He then endured a rigorous interview process. Interviews took place in Chicago and in Zan’s own home. Zan obviously made great impressions throughout this process as he is now looking forward to this exciting trip for the 2016-2017 academic year. When asked what he is most excited about, Zan commented, “I am honestly just looking forward to the exposure to a new culture and building a relationship with Germany and the German people.” Congratulations, Zan!
