1 William and Littleton Bagwell, Their Descendants and Historical Nuggets By Clarence Crocker In compiling this history of the William and Littleton Bagwell households, I have used census records, obituaries, years 1923-1929 not available and death certificates which unfortunately are not available before 1917 in Spartanburg, estate papers, land conveyance records, grave markers and every other means known to me to confirm relationships. Census records were written as the Enumerator understood the registrant who often had little to no education which led to numerous mistakes in spelling of names, dates and ages. Most of the Bagwell ladies and many of the men signed the legal documents recorded herein with an X mark with only the Judge and witness able to sign their full names. Because so many names are the same, I have numbered the names of William and Littleton Bagwell’s children to help in reference. Asterisks indicate further information follows. William and Littleton Bagwell, Their Descendants and Historical Nuggets
By Clarence Crocker
In compiling this history of the William and Littleton Bagwell households, I have used census records, obituaries, years 1923-1929 not available and death certificates which unfortunately are not available before 1917 in Spartanburg, estate papers, land conveyance records, grave markers and every other means known to me to confirm relationships.
I have tried to copy as recorded and corrected only the obvious, where I have erred, I apologize.

In the book “History of Spartanburg County” by Landrum we are told that a J.M. Bagwell was a Confederate Soldier and was severely wounded in the #2 Manassas battle. He had enlisted as a private in Co. I, 13th Regiment S. C. Volunteers. I could not verify if this was the same person.
No record of Martha Bagwell’s death was found

The brief obituary of Hannah Harlan Bagwell published Monday October 5, 1903 simply stated; “Mrs. Hannah Bagwell died at the home of her son S. M. Bagwell, Saturday.”

Excerpts from the obituary of Miss. Gertrude Bagwell published Sunday March 5. 1989;
“Lula Gertrude Bagwell 91, died March 4, 1989 in the Spartanburg Regional Hospital after a long illness. She was the daughter of Samuel Madison and Tallulah Bagwell Bagwell who owned a 2000 acre plantation along country Club Road, part of which is now the Oak Creek Plantation. The family had settled in this area in 1790. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
After her graduation from Converse College in 1919, she went to N. Y. city for a visit and remained for 68 years, returning to her home in Spartanburg in 1978. In N. Y. she sang for ten seasons with the Metropolitan Chorus and the Schola Cantorum. Her principal work was in the area of social welfare activity with the Welfare Council, the greater N.Y. Fund and other agencies.
Her love for music and the arts was evident in her devotion to so many of the Spartanburg organizations. She was an ardent supporter of Converse and Wofford College, the Spartanburg Historical Society, the Spartanburg Arts Center, the Spartanburg Music Foundation of which she was a board member
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in which her funeral services were held after which she was buried in the “Bagwell Family Cemetery”
According to a document dated January 13, 1819, “Elenor Bagwell bargained to sell and release to Littleton Bagwell and George Bullman in consideration of good services and other good causes to me together with $200 to Littleton Bagwell and George Bullman, during his life and his wife, Rebecca. Also a life estate to the children of said Rebecca, ½ of the estate, ½ of the tract whereon I now live containing 550 acres bounded by William Tracy, Wiley Tracy and McAbee as recorded in Book Q, Page 209, Spartanburg County Recorder’s office.”
Based on this document, we know that Elenor Bagwell was Littleton Bagwell Sr. wife and that Rebecca Bagwell and Littleton Bagwell were two of his children. This seems to be verified in later documents.
