See you all in September! Willamette University Swimming had another record setting year. Our returning swimmers picked up right where they left off at the 2016 NWC Championship meet. The freshmen class came in with enthusiasm and work ethic. Our annual Alumni meet was one of the best we have had. Thank you to everyone that came out to support our program by racing or hanging out on Saturday. We even had a few former swimmers speak to our current team on Friday after practice. It is always great to connect with Alumni during the meet and throughout the year. The men finished the regular season 3-5 with wins over Pacific, Lewis & Clark and a win over NAIA team The College of Idaho. The men’s team finished 6th at the NWC Championships in Federal Way, WA. Friday night was big with a new 400 Medley relay record set by Jason Bayang, Alika Masei, Mark Yuvienco and Derek Ludwig. The record was last set in 1992. Yuvienco (Jr.) led the men with two new school records in the 200 Fly and 200 IM. Ludwig (Fr.) broke the 200 IM record, formerly held by Tim Roth, in the consolation finals. Mark earned a new top time for the Bearcats in the championship finals! Also finishing in the top 16 in their respective events were Masei (Sr.), Reuben White (Jr.), Bayang (Sr.), Josh Bumgarner (Sr.), Shelby Merrill (Sr.), Ben Hedman (Fr.) and Colin Hakeman (Fr.). We are looking forward to the future with the talented group of men we have in the program this upcoming season. The talent on the women’s side has grown across the NWC, including for your Willamette Bearcats. The women finished the regular season 0-8 and 7th at the NWC Championships. Our women’s program is looking toward the future with more teammates scoring at the NWC meet than in pervious years. The women kicked off their season at the NWC Sprint meet where Cassie Tallman (Jr.) finished 6th out of 120 swimmers. The women also set a total of 3 individual records at the NWC meet this year. Tallman broke her own 200 IM record, finishing third overall. She also claimed a new 200 Breaststroke record finishing in second place by only 0.01. Ashlyn Witherwax (Jr.) won the consolation final in the 100 Breaststroke claiming her first “Not Unto Ourselves Alone Are We Born” Summer 2017 INSIDE THIS ISSUE 16-17 Season Recap Student-Athlete Awards Night – a new look at new awards #youmakeitpossible Welcome the Class of 2021 MEET SCHEDULE Sep. 16th 9:00am Alumni Meet Sept. 22nd 6:00pm @OSU/SWOCC Oct. 7th 9:00am Intrasquad Meet Nov. 3rd 6:00pm vs Whitman College Nov. 4th 1:00pm vs Whitworth University Nov. 10th 6:00pm @ Pacific Lutheran Nov. 11th 1:00pm @ U. of Puget Sound Dec. 1-3 All Day CAT Senior Open Jan. 2nd-7th All Day @ Winter Training Jan. 12th 5:00pm vs. College of Idaho Jan. 19th 6:00pm @ Lewis & Clark Jan. 20th 1:00pm vs. Pacific University Jan. 27th* 1:00pm vs. Linfield College Feb. 9th-11th All Day NWC Championships @ Weyerhaeuser Aquac Center Like Bearcat Swimming on Facebook facebook.com/willametteswimming Follow Bearcat Swimming on Twitter twitter.com/WillametteSwim 2016 NWC Championships—Dinner at the Burdines
