Functional Medicine Tenets
Each body is unique.
The body's natural, default state is one of wellness.
Everything in the body is interconnected.
The cause and the complaint may be distant from one another (in the body, in time, in the biochemistry).
The collection of root causes of dis-ease in the body is unique for each person.
Effective medicine is customized for each unique person.
Wellness includes the entire patient experience(physical, mental, emotional, spiritual).
The patient's active participation and beliefin their healing are central to their ability to get (and remain) well.
All modalities that bring greater balance, ease, and flow to the patient are a key part of their unique healing journey and ongoing “health care”.
Making It Hard
Making It Simple...But Accurate!
“There is no ‘disease’ in the body, only dis-ease. The origin is always unique – always.” - Dr. Jeffrey Bland

The Power of Rapid Relief
Focus on getting your client or patient some Rapid Relief from their most frustrating symptoms
–Use a detailed symptom checklist in your Initial Intake forms
Galvanize their belief that they can heal, their personal commitment to the process, and their trust in you
Top 3 areas I choose for Rapid Relief
–Headache
–Poor Sleep
–Constipation
Rapid Relief: Headaches
Nociceptors (“pain bodies”) on nerve fibers
Muscle tension + blood vessel dilation or constriction
Persistent/Frequent: Insufficient Magnesium
–Try magnesium glycinate 300mg twice daily with food. (Not for those with kidney disease or impairment e.g. eGFR < 60 mg/min).
Persistent/Frequent: Epinephrine surge (usually from stress)
–Try organic green tea or l-theanine, 100-200mg
Persistent: Dehydration
–Plain, clean water – not tea (even herbal)
Intermittent: Food Sensitivity/Intolerance
–histamine, tyramine, sulfites, aspartame, caffeine
Monthly: Hormone Imbalance–Try 2 Tbsp ground flaxseed beginning a few days in advance of and all during the 4th week of the menstrual cycle (mid-luteal peak). May also need Chastetree berry (aka Vitex), 500mg 1-2x daily, to boost progesterone.
* For migraines specifically, see follow-up email for link to separate solutions.
Rapid Relief: Sleep Woes
Imbalance or surge in neurotransmitters or hormones.
Melatonin matters. But so does serotonin, cortisol, estrogen, GABA/glutamate balance, insulin, alcohol, digestion, …
Caffeine detoxification varies – dramatically. No caffeine after noon (including chocolate). Occasionally the single 7am cup IS part of the problem.
“Sleep Hygiene” is critical. Convince your brain it's bedtime! Many issues...
– Full spectrum light (e.g. TV, computer, phone)
– Large meal right before bed.
– (Hyper?) Stimulating activities e.g. crime show, evening news, video games
– Stress-inducing activities e.g. tomorrow's to-do list, check email “just one last time”, deep discussions “about the kids”
– “S&S” Bedroom (only for sleep and sex)
– No phones in the bedroom
Rapid Relief: Sleep Woes
Trouble “winding down” to get to bed: High night-time cortisol
–Try ~500mg holy basil or ashwagandha and 300mg magnesium glycinate in evening
Trouble with racing mind once in bed: Glutamate/GABA imbalance
–Try 500mg N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and 1000mg taurine. No MSG, aspartame. If advanced, add 400mg l-theanine about an hour before bed (good for those with ADHD too).
Trouble w/sleep after alcohol: eventually less GABA action; lowers blood sugar
–Try 1000mg taurine before bed and a small snack (e.g small apple w/nut butter)
Trouble falling asleep: Low melatonin (perhaps combined with high cortisol)
–Try 300mcg to 1mg melatonin an hour before bed. (NSAIDs & beta blockers may be the cause.)
Trouble staying asleep: Low serotonin (so melatonin low middle of the night)
–Try 100mg 5-HTP (Not for use with SSRI antidepressants, other sleep aids, or other serotonin drugs e.g. Wellbutrin without additional training)
Waking up with hot flashes: fluctuating estrogen or low cortisol or insulin resistance or Vitamin D supplements.
–Try stopping Vit. D for two weeks. Try small snack before bed for cortisol or blood sugar issues. Chastetree (Vitex) and black cohosh can help with sex hormone balance (maca too for more advanced cases, effective dosing can vary e.g. 1 tsp to 1 heaping Tbsp).
Rapid Relief: Constipation
Typically something other than at least one, easy-to-pass, complete bowel movement daily without straining
Most of your clients don't understand the dangers of reduced waste clearance
Many possible causes e.g. magnesium deficiency, neuropathy, microbial imbalance or
overgrowth (SIBO), low serotonin, hypothyroid, hypoadrenal, too high or low adrenaline (or drugs that affect it), stress/anxiety, insufficient water, fiber, fats.
Insufficient magnesium
–Try 200-800mg magnesium citrate at bedtime; start low.
Insufficient healthy fat
–Increase olive oil dramatically (not if active gallbladder issues).
Insufficient hydration (again, not tea)
Hard to pass/straining: Insufficient insoluble fiber
–Try more whole grains (except oats), non-starchy vegetables, fruit w/skin, nuts, seeds
Watery, incomplete stools: Insufficient soluble fiber
–Try more oats, banana, okra, chia seeds, psyllium husks, brussels sprouts, root vegetables

Wildly Satisfying Your Clients
Beyond Initial Relief....
You want to be a confident expert in addressing the true root causes of your client's dis-ease, dysfunction, and imbalance.
The three most common I see in mine
–Dis-ease Begins in the Gut
–Insulin Resistance
–Estrogen Dominance
I'll send you an email with access to clinical pearls on all three of these root cause drivers of dis-ease in the body.

–e.g. anemia, neuropathy, depression, headache
Gastrointestinal Dis-ease
–e.g. IBS, constipation, belching
GI-origin Inflammation
–e.g. osteoarthritis, asthma, migraine, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, eczema
Autoimmune Dis-ease
–Hashimoto's thyroiditis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis
