Slip into the shadows of Virginia's 1776 frontier and see history come alive as cultures clash and the flames of war ignite. Tour Cherokee warrior and colonial militia camps, experience frontier fort life, and buy unusual wares from 18th century merchants and colonial traders. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children. Special night battle is $3 per vehicl e September 11—Community Appreciation Open House The park is excited about holding the second annual Community Appreciation Day. Lunch is on us ( a hot dog, chips and drink ). Don't miss a free lunch and the day will be filled owutg activities and fun. The park opens at 8 a.m., and there will be a ceremony before lunch when we will especially remember the vicitms of September 11,2001. Enjoy historical and nature activities, and take part in a scavenger hunt by using global positioning system (GPS) devices. We will conclude the day with a frontier battle at Martin's Station. The day is completely free, so come on out and enjoy the park. October 8 - Wilderness Road Heritage Festival Join us for a glimpse into Southwest Virginia's unique historical and cultural heritage. Appalachian craft makers fill the lawn of the Karlan mansion with their wares as bluegrass music dances on the air. The sweet smell of home cookingwill entice you to purchase dining delights from the food vendors. Immerse yourself in living history and experience life as it was on Virginia’s frontier at Historic Martin Station. 5-7 - Raid at Martin’s Station May October 29-30 Pumpkins in the Park / Haunted Trail Hayride Wilderness Road and Lee County Tourism Committee join forces to present a Halloween spectacular you’ll never forget. The event is highlighted by the “Haunted Trail Ride.”, a hayride along the Wilderness Road Trail complete with scary incidents” The “Haunted Trail Ride”, will be offered Friday and Saturday night. Additionally, on Saturday there will be Trunk and Treat and along with a costume contest. Pumpkin painting, face painting, and spooky music round out the fun. It is $3 per vehicle on Friday night and $5 on Saturday. December 3-4 Christmas Past and Present Join us at Historic Martin’s Station for a festive yuletide celebration with music, dance and caroling as the Christmas spirit illuminates the Virginia frontier. See this authentic re-creation of a Colonial fort by candlelight. Join in the historicfestivities or just sit back and enjoy a hot cup of ciderin front of a warm, cozy fire. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus visit the Karlan Mansion forthe Victorian style Christmas celebration! Have a picture of your child with the jolly old elf and Mrs. Claus. Santa even has small gift for the kids! Come out and enjoy cookies, hot chocolate and other light refreshmentscourtesy of the Friends of Wilderness Road State Park.
