Keynote Speaker Updates

Douglas Brinkley

Brinkley is Professor of History at Rice University, a bestselling author, and presidential historian for CBS News. He will speak at the National Wilderness Conference as part of Wilderness: An American Icon onSaturday, October 18th.

Dave Foreman

Foreman is a longtime wilderness conservationist and founder of the Wildlands Project. He will speak as part of the conference’s closing keynote address,Inspiration for the Future of Wilderness on Sunday, October 19th.

Partnerships and Professionalism: The New Paradigm for Wilderness Preservation

• For up to 200 attendees • Hosted at the Rio Grande Nature Center with

an evening social at the Elena Galagos Open Space adjacent to the Sandia Mountain Wilderness.

• This training will be held October 14 and 15, 2014 and costs $75/participant. Participants who are also attending the National Wilderness Conference receive a $25 discount.

Gila 90th• The Gila Wilderness, the first national

dedicated wilderness, was created on June 3, 1924 as a result of a proposal by the renowned conservation pioneer Aldo Leopold.

• To commemorate this historical event, the Gila National Forest hosted a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the Gila Wilderness on May 25 at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument Visitor Center.

• Also opening for the Gila 90th anniversary is, “Gila Wild,” an exhibit at the Silver City Museum including historical photos and artifacts, interactive displays, demonstrations and special programs throughout the year

Wild America Exhibit• New Mexico’s Etherton Gallery announces its

summer exhibition Wild America • Opening June 10, featuring photographs by

Bay Area photographer, Debra Bloomfield from her recent series, Wilderness and a selection of classic images by Ansel Adams.
