Carver students, this summer I ad- vise you to have several conversa- tions with your parents and ask them about their careers and their specific career goals. Even though you are years away from your high school graduation, it’s not too early for you to begin thinking about what you want to do after you graduate. Currently, there are six different ways that you can prepare for a great career: High School Ca- reer and Technology; Four-Year Colleges; Community and Techni- cal Colleges; Career and Trade Schools; Military; and, Apprentice- ships. For the sake of space, I will not elaborate on the six options, but rather, I will encourage you to spend some time this summer learning about each one of them. As you think about what you want to do when you grow up ask your- self three questions: (1) What am I good at? (2) What do I like to do? and (3)What is important to me? It’s not a decision that you must make now, but if you learn about the options now, then it will be eas- ier when the moment arrives. No matter what you decide to do, just plan to continue your education after high school graduation. As always, at Carver, we have an open door policy. $15 dollar Sports Physicals will be given

May 10th at Carver, from 6-7pm. These

are good for most camps and if your child

wishes to participate in Carver Athletics

next year.

The Summer Reading Requirements

for 7th and 8th graders have changed,

and though the actual number of books

required is the same, three, there is a

new writing component to the require-

ments. Students will now need to keep

a special reading notebook in which

they will record figures of speech found

in their reading, along with science

facts they find. The manner in which

these are to be recorded is very spe-

cific, and if your child has not yet

brought home the flyers outlining the

new guidelines, please ask them to get

information from either their English or

Science teacher or Ms. Edwards in the

Carver Library.

Students will be encouraged to create

blogs, once the school year begins

again, where they will post their find-

ings recorded in their special reading

notebooks.

Students need to choose a minimum of

three books, none of which can be

books for which the Reading Counts

Quiz has already been taken.

Ms. Edwards also encourages stu-

dents to start their own book clubs,

search the Internet for Author web-

pages or book trailers, or even create

book trailers of their own.

Don’t Keep a Good Book

to Yourself!

A Farewell from Elaine Ard, outgoing Carver PTSA President, 2009-2010…

May is here along with our last month of the 2009/2010 school year. What a great year at Carver!

I want to take this opportunity to say THANK-YOU to our great Carver PTSA community. So many of you have sharedyour talents and time this year. Both the kids and Carver are beneficiaries of your kindness and hard work.

Thank you also to all our board members and committee chairs – Karen Bruns, Kara Folkins, Marqua Harris, TracyHorner Shears, Jill Drummond, Kathy Ostrem, Dawn Lowe, Joy Davis, Laura Daniels, Gina Ward, Stefanie Kelly, HegeSolbakken, Becky Eagleton – they made my role a breeze. If you did not have the chance to get involved this year – thePTSA welcomes your help in the upcoming year. Grab a new board member and find out how to volunteer.

The Ard Family has enjoyed our three years at Carver. We have been fortunate to meet great and dedicated faculty, ad-ministrative staff and employees at Carver. They have all helped us along the way.

Have a wonderful summer break !

CARVER TENNIS TEAM CONTINUES SUCCESS

The Carver Middle School Tennis team had an excellent second season that brought togetherreturning players along with many new players. There was tremendous improvement among allthe players over the course of the season. Many of the team attended a tennis camp overSpring break that refined their technique and provided confidence building experiences withmatch play. LaFortune Tennis Center, through the support of a generous donor, offered ourtennis team members the opportunity to attend the camp free of charge!

With two matches remaining, the boys’ team has won a majority of their matches, in-cluding matches against Cascia, Thoreau, NOAH, and Regents. The girls’ team improved theirgame score in each contest and recorded their first overall match win against Edison! One daylater, the girls’ team enjoyed a second overall match win against Thoreau for a terrific upbeatfinish! Team members include sixth graders: Rachel Caldwell, Zac Canaday, Ben McDonald,Jack Foxx, Lily Grant, Natalie Widdows, Sydney Johnson, Laura Warning,; Seventh graders:Skylar Yoder, Hana Dickens, Joseph Charney, Patrick Wilson, Zach Pielsticker, MichaelMcBride, Justin Ostrem, Jacob Brasel, Brooks Davis, GeMahri Price; and Eighth graders:Logan Dierker, McKenzie Wilson, Katie Grantham, Aaron Hockett, Can Ozkaya, Noah Martin-Beal, Eli Farris, Matthew Teegarden.

The matching grant for expanded sports at Carver established by the Oklahoma Surgi-cal Hospital Foundation in late 2008 has played an important role for new athletics at Carver, including tennis. But none of this could have been possible without the generous support of theparents and extended families of the Carver tennis team members. The Carver tennis teamhas been lots of fun and we encourage more students to join us for next year!

A Message from Laura Daniels and Designer Showcase:

It is that time of year again when we get to walk around the beautiful Designer Showcase house, chat with friends, and get decorating ideas, all for the low cost of donating 3 1/2 hours of Carver parent volunteer time! Our volun-teer job is to simply greet visitors and direct them through the house.

Carver is scheduled to provide volunteers on Wednesday, May 19, 9:30am to 1:00pm. (And if you’re a new Carverparent or a former one, you are welcome still to help!!)

The house is on South 31st Street, between Harvard and Lewis. Designer Showcase is a major fundraiser for theFoundation for Tulsa Schools. If you have questions or wish to sign up, please contact me (Laura Daniels) at 630-8057.

INTERCULTURAL

INTERLUDE

As you may know, Carver Middle School has an outstanding reputation and is recog-

nized as one of the best middle schools in the United States. Greatschools.org recently

named Carver Middle School as the top middle school in the metro Tulsa area. As a

result we have high schools from across the country asking to visit our students. Carver

grad, Peyton Wilson is graduating from Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Massa-

chusetts this year, and Carver alum Deborah Olaleye is graduating from the Oklahoma

School for Science and Math on her way to Northwestern University. We are now very

pleased to announce Rebecca Nievar has been accepted to the Phillips Exeter Acad-

emy in Exeter, New Hampshire for the upcoming school year. Exeter offers an ex-

tremely challenging curriculum with students enrolled from all over the world. A repre-

sentative from the Exeter admissions office will be here in the fall speaking to our eighth

grade students. More information may be obtained by visiting exeter.edu. Feel free to

contact Mr. Ehrle if you would like to know more about the many educational opportuni-

ties available to our Carver students. Submitted by 8th grade Counselor, Mr. Ehrle
