When the temperatures drop, older adults run a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather including hypothermia, frostbite and falls in the ice and snow. It’s im-portant that they and those who care for them take certain precautions during this time of year. Here’s what you need to know.
HYPOTHERMIA Older adults tends to produce less body heat than younger people and its harder for them to tell when their temperature is too low. This can be dangerous because when your body is in the cold too long, it begins to lose heat quickly. The result can be hypothermia, which is a dangerous drop in body temperature.
• KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS of hypothermia: lots of shivering, cold skin that is pale or ashy, feeling very tired, confused and sleepy, feeling weak, problems walking and slowed breathing and heart rate. Call 911 if you think you or someone else has hypothermia.
• STAY INDOORS when its extremely cold outside and if its really windy. Keep your indoor temperature set at about 65 degrees. Also if you have to go outside don’t stay out for long and go indoors if you start to shiver.
• STAY DRY: Wet clothing chills your body quickly.
• WEAR LAYERS: Wearing two or three thin layers of loose-fitted clothing is warmer than a single layer or thick clothing. If needed wear layers as well with a hat, gloves, coat and boots. Wearing a scarf to cover your mouth and nose will help to protect your lungs from the cold air.
FROSTBITE Extreme cold can cause frostbite damage to the skin that can go all the way down to the bone. Frostbite usually affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes. In severe cas-es, frostbite can result in loss of limbs. People with heart disease and other circulation prob-lems are more likely to get frostbite.
• COVER UP all parts of your body when you go outside. If your skin turns red, dark, or starts hurting go inside right away.
• KNOW THE TELLTALE SIGNS of frostbite: skin that’s white or ashy or greyish-yellow, skin that feels hard or waxy and numbness. If you think you or someone else has frostbite, call for medial help immediately. A person with frostbite may also have hypothermia, so check for those symptoms too.
• IF FROSTBITE OCCURS place frostbitten parts of your body in warm (not hot) water.
INJURY WHILE SHOVELING SNOW When its cold your heart works extra hard to keep you warm. Working hard, such as shovel-ing snow may put too much strain on your heart if you have heart disease. Shoveling can also be dangerous if you have problems with balance or “thin bones” (osteoporosis).
• ASK YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER IF IT’S SAFE for you to shovel snow or do other hard work in the cold weather.

The Stitching Post Dear Friends of Montrose Senior Center:
This summer has been very busy for The Stitching Post. So far this year we have
given out 1471 hand made items and 3397 item total including the items we
have purchased.
We received a large load of vinyl material that we will be using to make our regular walker caddies
and also adapting that pattern to make a new style that fits inside of a wheel chair to hold water
bottles, phones, and Kleenex, etc. making it easy to reach for people in wheelchairs.
We are also starting to collect items for the Mitten Tree here at the center. We need mittens, gloves,
scarves, and hats. We are also starting to prepare for Christmas. In the next couple of months we
will be in need of Christmas material, fleece and flannel prints, and fiber fill. We also are in need of
small items for children and adults, and wrapped candy to fill stockings. However, what we are in
need of most is people to help. Not every job requires sewing; we could use help cutting, pinning,
trimming threads, or just simply helping to fill stockings.
Thank you to all those who have helped or contributed to The Stitching Post in any capacity. We
truly appreciate your help and could not do it without your support.

It is the policy of the Montrose Township Senior Center to
place the health, safety and welfare of the participants of the
center first and foremost. Therefore, when weather condi-
tions present a health hazard such as large snowfalls or sub-
zero weather the center may close. If Montrose Community
Schools shut down due to bad weather then our bus will not
be running and we will not be serving lunch. The center may
still open to provide a warm place for seniors to avoid the cold.
