“Give a Hoot; Don’t Pollute!” That is what Woodsy Owl teaches us as children, but it goes for everyone, adults included. As you can see driving around Wild Acres, there is a lot of litter scat-tered on our community roads. Whether it is from people walking home from the pool concession stands, drivers and passengers tossing it out a car window or deliberate dumping of trash in the woods, this needs to STOP. Let’s take pride in where we live. First of all, take your garbage home with you. If you are in need of garbage collection services, call the Administration Office for the numbers of local companies. Secondly, if you are walking around and see litter, please pick it up; carry a plastic bag with you. If we all pitch in, we can keep Wild Acres a beautiful and clean place to live and raise our families. Thank you!

Ask the Sensei…By Sensei Albert Casale

Q: (Bushkill). Dear Sensei: I am concerned about my 19-year-old son. I have recently been noticing a lot of energy bottles and cans in his room and car. Can these products have a potential hazard to his health?

A: Studies show it certainly could. Energy drinks come in a variety of formulations, but most contain caffeine and sugar and possibly herbal stimulants. Having an occasional energy drink isn’t necessarily bad, but many of these energy drinks contain very high amounts of caffeine, sugar and other herbal stimulants and acids. Some people create serious medical problems when they consume energy drinks with alcohol, which can cause a faster heartbeat, irritability, nervousness, impaired sleep, faint-ing or even heart attacks and nausea. In addition, the acid and sugars in these drinks can promote aggressive tooth decay. It’s very important to educate your son, about the potential hazards of energy drinks. I would encourage him to focus on being healthy, have an energetic life, regular exercise, adequate, sleep and to have a healthy diet.

Letters from Board MembersWild Acres Residents,

With the recent election now behind us, I would like to introduce you to your new Board of Directors: Chairman Dmitry Kupershmidt, President Michael Balagula, Vice Presi-dent Nonna Yelan, Treasurer Angela Wilson, Secretary Sofiya Takh, and Board members Ed Banz, Myron Cowher, Wendy Healey, Leonid Mandel, John Mascia, Felix Rey. We are an eclectic mix of individuals brought together by our shared love and desire to help improve the community. We are deeply honored that you have chosen us to represent your interests in the community and look forward to working both with and for you in the years to come.

And to those who have chosen to hide in the shadows and throw stones I remind you of the immortal words of statesman Arnold Schwarzenegger: “Stop whining!” Don’t wait around for someone else to act. I have been looking for leaders. But I realized leadership is about being the first to act. Come down off your high horses and join in the very pro-cess you hold so dear. Don’t just come to the meetings; come armed with good ideas and noble intentions.

For too long I have heard about how divisive Board politics can be. Consider this a won-derful opportunity to work together. Where some choose to chip away at our community I aim at bringing it together. Where some seek to tear apart, I desire to unify and build up, to create a community we can all be proud of.

I have two good ears and am always open to both constructive criticism as well as new and exciting ideas on how to best govern. To those that chose to participate in the process, the Board welcomes you with open arms and excitedly awaits your contributions. To those mired in apathy or are consumed by pointless bigotry and hatred, please engage in some careful introspection and reevaluate the kind of role you intend to play in local politics.

Michael Balagula, Board of Directors President

Dear Residents of Wild Acres,

We proudly announce and welcome four new members to the Wild Acres Board. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation we thank you for your support in taking time from your busy schedule to research, consider and vote. Through your elected officials, your voice will be heard, through your elected officials you will be informed. It is very important that we unite and work together to protect our investment and improve the quality and status of our community. On the board of the wild acres community, I represent several committees, recreation and public safety. I would like to focus on ensuring that all residents are safe and that our community provides extra curriculum activities through which we continue to meet and build strong ties to each other. I am always open to new ideas and advices; please feel free to contact me via email with suggestions. I am hoping that we will continue succeeding in building a healthy, strong and powerful community. Together we will make a difference. Again your support in this election is greatly appreciated and through us your voices will be heard. I am looking forward to working with everyone on improving our community. Respectfully, Nonna Yelan, Board of Directors Vice President

Financial “Reality Check”To the Membership,

I wish to give you a partial financial status update. We will call this a reality check. I began going thru the numbers as soon as I was appointed to the open Board seat. That just happens to be something that I do proficiently.

For the 2012-2013 budget years for developed lots, the billable amount should have brought the Assoc. $1,058,250.00. Our budget and finance committee projected 85%; reality check is 77%: $814,852.50 actual$1,058,250.00 projected $243,397.50 LOSS

For the dam assessment, again the budget and finance committee projected 85%; the actual is only 77%: $239,662.50 actual $311,250.00 projected $71,587.50 LOSS

Now I will take just one line item out of the budget, maintenance expenses.Road repairs for this year’s budget were: $100,000.00; however,$148,906.98 was spent in the first month of the fiscal year. $48,906.98 over spentThis leaves absolutely no money left for the remaining 11 months of the year for any road repair.

To say this new Board has its hands full is an understatement. It’s going to take all of our knowledge and experience to effectively operate our beautiful association. I believe we have brought in a knowledgeable person with many years of management to lead us through the next couple years.

Myron Cowher, Board Member

Do Not Feed Wild Animals Why? Primarily, because you can create an unnatural depen-dency on your part for their supply of food. If that is interrupted, they can be in trouble. If it is a bear you can be in trouble. Once a bear learns food is available at a certain location he/she will aggressively pursue it. If it is not at the usual site, they have been documented, having destroyed screened porches trying to find where “their” food is. Encouraging them to eat from your hand (or even close to you) is like playing Russian roulette. You have no way of know-ing what noise or scent or action will cause a bear to feel threat-ened and react violently. Can you or your child out-wrestle 400 pounds of bear with 2” claws? Think about it. Wild animals are just that - wild - and should be observed from a respect-able distance. If you put food out to attract birds, it is best to find a way to hang the feeder at least six feet in the air to prevent the bears from taking it.

Volunteerism In the year 2012, 26.5% of the American population volunteered in some way. Volun-teerism can be anything from offering to drive a neighbor to and from the doctor during an illness to serving on the local PTA to stuffing envelopes for your church, emergency services or political party. In Wild Acres, volunteers work as committee members, litter cleanup crews, and help-ing out at special events. EVERY person in Wild Acres has a talent that could enrich the community. Maybe it’s your area of business or in your favorite hobby, that you have the expertise to lend us. Maybe it’s just physically pitching in whenever needed or baking for a special event.
