It's not a website - it's a community

It is not its size or its structure that makes Wikipedia so unprecedented — it’s the passion of tens of thousands of active Wikipedia volunteers around the world

“Real communities aren't your cheap labor force. They are real people with passions, hopes, and dreams. Your job is to help them do what they want to do, not to extract labor from them.”Jimmy Wales

Community sourcing
Crowd sourcing* more passive, contributory participation models * Examples: voting, tagging, or transcription* focus on the product / result
Community sourcing* more collaborative approach between participants* more complex tasks made of a more committed, loyal community* encourages a focus on the process of achieving the goal rather than the mere product/result

Community sourcing rules for engagement I
Content to engage with: A successful open community sourcing project will need content or a topic that motivates the community to participate,
Community participation: The community should take part before, during, and after the implementation of a project.
Access to expertise: Community sourcing is the combination of expert knowledge and community contributions through open dialogue.
Community sourcing rules for engagement II
Community participation: The community must feel empowered to participate and must have a sense of ownership, right alongside the partner institution.
A focus on process, not product: It's not all about the end result when the more valuable aspect of an open authority project is the community and the process behind it.
Evidence of collaboration: Throughout the project, there should be some way of illustrating that the community played a key role.
