Narrative  Report

WikiWomenCamp  2012  is  a  women  only  international  conference  by  sex  or  by  gender  for  all  individuals  supporting  “Free  Knowledge  and  Technology”  held  in  Buenos  Aires  Argentina  25-‐27  May  2012.  The  attended  by  eighteen  women  from  various  countries,  most  of  the  participants  are  media  wiki  contributors.    The  conference  is  supported  by  Wikimedia  Australia,  Wikimedia  Austria,  Wikimedia  Germany  for  travel  participant,  Wikimedia  Argentina  for  conference  room,    lodging,  and  meals  during  the  conference,  Wikifarm  Anne  Goldenberg  as  free  of  charge  facilitator,  and  The  Ford  Foundation  for  the  participants  trip.

Background

WikiWomenCamp  began  as  the  idea  of  holding  a  meeting  with  the  intention  of  opening  opportunities  for  women  (both  biologically  based  on  their  gender  or  preferred  sex)  to  come  together,  learn  from  other  women's  experiences,  and  to  network  and  meet  interface  so  that  they  can  achieve  their  goals  and  share  the  passion  and  effort  as  a  “wiki  ohana”.  The  event  is  also  intended  as  a  forum  for  discussion  to  meet  other  individual  with  similar  effort  and  share  problems  and  solutions  that  can  be  implemented.    The  conference  was  held  to  discussed  the  challenges  women  face  in  contributing  to  the  movement  of  "Free  Knowledge"  and  try  to  identify  possible  opportunity  for  women  in  order  that  they  can  actively  support  the  dissemination  of  knowledge.  Sharing  successful  strategies  in  conducting  outreach  in  different  countries  and  getting  to  know  each  other.      Eighteen  women  from  various  countries  eventually  participated  in  WikiWomenCamp.  Organizers  believe  that  the  diverse  participants  need  to  have  an  open  mind  in  order  to  make  the  conference  successful  and  colaboration  possible.  Participants  are  expected  to  take  an  active  role  in  discussing  and  helping  other  participants  interact  in  groups  if  they  are  having  problems,  and  to  share  personal  experiences.    Because  WikiWomenCamp  is  grassroots  effort,  each  participant  is  solely  responsible  for  making  the  conference  to  be  productive,  lightweight,  and  fun.    This  event  is  open  to  all  women  who  are  involved  in  the  movement  of  "free  knowledge"  wikimedia,  or  affiliated  with  either  wiki  wiki  in  terms  of  commercial,  nonprofit,  wiki  for  education,  and  more.  The  conference  will  take  place  on  23,  24,  and  May  25,  2012  in  Buenos  Aires  and  closed  with  Wiki  Genero  on  May  26,  2012.

First  Day,  May  23,  2012

Opening  WikiWomenCamp  first  day,  facilitator  Anne  Goldenberg  (standing  in  the  middle  of  the  circle)  describes  the  concept  of  an  open  conference    Conference  opens    WikiWomenCamp  designed  using  the  concept  of  "open  conference".  The  concept  were  unlike  other  meetings  planned  far  earlier  and  uses  a  fixed  agenda.  On  the  first  day  WikiWomenCamp  the  facilitator,  Anne  Goldenberg  explained  about  the  "open  conference"  concept.  Although  many  things  are  flexible,  but  opens  conference  has  fixed  rules,  such  as;            Whoever  comes  are  the  right  people            Whatever  has  happened  to  be  the  only  event  that  might  happen          The  event  started  when  everyone  was  ready  to  start            The  event  finishes  when  everyone  was  finished      Also  there  are  other  regulations  that  accompanies  changes  of  classes  classes:  the  rule  of  two  feet,  which  means  that  participants  are  allowed  out  to  go  from  a  class  where  s/he  thinks  didn’t  suit  their  need,  and  the  discussion  leader  should  not  protest  when  participants  exit  .  Also  participants  who  are  not  learning  anything,  or  do  not  contribute  to  the  discussion  are  welcome  to  go  and  do  something  else.  Approximately  45  minutes  were  spent  explaining  the  regulation  and  then  proceed  to  discuss  the  agenda  for  the  three-‐day  conference.    Class  discussion      According  to  statistics,  only  about  10%  of  women  who  participated  becoming

contributors  to  Wikipedia  and  this  fact  is  likely  to  occur  due  to  factors  related  to  the  community  and  users.  In  addition  to  technical  problems,  information  about  how  to  contribute  –  up  to  recognition  by  Wikipedia  is  still  very  limited.  New  users  need  specific  training  and  guidance  to  start  editing  and  overcome  discomfort.  It  is  identify  that  there  is  a  need  to  make  an  active  new  user  to  feel  welcome  to  the  community.  Another  factor  that  led  to  the  low  participation  of  women  in  Wikipedia  is  a  limited  time  to  volunteer.  Women  tend  to  be  less  confident  in  arguing  against  the  articles  they  write,  and  the  main  thing  is  women  should  know  clearly  why  they  need  to  contribute  to  Wikipedia.

Siska  Doviana  of  Wikimedia  Indonesia  demonstrate  the  utility  of  reading  Wikipedia  statistics  for  measuring  project  success  and  publicity  efforts.  Ability  to  read  statistics  is  like  seeing  the  number  of  readers,  ranking  Wikipedia,  and  Wikipedia  fluctuations  or  the  developments  in  various  languages  to  help  the

mainstream  media  journalists  write  their  stories  in  more  exciting  because  accurate  data.  However,  input  from  Russia,  are  the  statistics  that  show  the  factual  data  that  a  wiki  /  community  does  not  operate  with  a  level  above  average  unattractive  to  be  reported  to  the  media,  because  you  will  have  a  bad  effect  on  the  news  reader.  Wikimedia  Indonesia  explained  that  for  the  important  data  to  be  accurate  at  the  media,  not  "cool",  but  Russia  still  think  the  data  should  be  given  a  "cool"  thing,  not  bad.  Participants  from  India  and  Spayol  interested  to  know  more  about  how  statistics  become  one  of  the  means  to  see  the  success  of  a  writing  competition  and  the  results  obtained  showed  that  women  dominate  the  top  five  ranking  in  all  competitions  ever  held.

Day  Two,  May  24,  2012

Participants  discussion  on  the  second  day  WikiWomenCamp    Volunteers  from  Cambodia  lead  a  class  about  how  to  organize  a  successful  community  event.  The  explanation  includes  Southeast  Asia:  organizing  a  pre-‐event  for  the  promotion  and  outreach  to  the  community,  to  share  responsibility  during  the  event  and  post-‐event  activities  to  evaluate  the  difficulties  and  lessons  learned  from  the  implementation  of  an  event.    The  use  of  Wiki  for  project  management  has  been  implemented  in  Indonesia  via  Wikimedia  Cipta  project.  Steps  needed  include:  budgeting  funds  for  major  infrastructure,  training  volunteers  who  will  implement  the  project,  implement  the  program,  and  prepare  the  final  report.  Many  questions  regarding  the  use  of  grant  funds  and  its  reciepient,  including:  "What  if  the  funds  are  administered  and  the  recipient  run  with  the  project  money?”      India  expressed  interest  to  conduct  competitions  in  the  language  of  Kerala,  and  WMID  will  evaluate  the  possibility  of  training  for  India  volunteer  in  Jakarta  for  a  replication  project.    A  lecturer  in  digital  art  and  photography  in  a  college  Argentina  using  Wikipedia  as  a  medium  of  education.  He  gave  the  task  of  researching  a  particular  topic  to  the  students  and  the  results  were  presented  to  the  class.  A  summary  of  the  research  included  Spanish  Wikipedia  within  3  months.  Students  who  are  new  to  directly  interact  with  the  Wikipedia  community  and  also  mentored  by  the  technically  lecturer.      The  participants  discussed  about  the  harassment  or  threat  they  received  and    experienced  on  Wikipedia.  One  of  the  participant  attempted  to  neutralize  an

article  about  feminism  or  women's  rights  written  with  bias,.  She  realize  that  there  are  barriers  and  challenges  experienced  by  women  in  their  daily  lives  for  contributing.  Even  in  Argentina  which  has  a  woman  president,  the  issue  of  gender  inequality  is  not  the  agenda  of  the  government  so  that  there  are  many  women  who  are  sexually  abused  and  ±  500  000  women  /  year  die  from  illegal  abortions.  In  South  Africa,  even  if  a  woman  has  a  successful  personal  life  or  great  power  in  public,  but  once  back  in  the  house,  they  only  have  a  weak  position.  Women  with  a  deviant  sexual  orientation  (lesbian)  is  also  highly  discriminated  against  to  have  abused  and  even  killed  because  of  their  sexual  preference.  While  the  gays  more  likely  to  be  tolerated  and  accepted  by  the  public.

Third  Day,  May  25,  2012

Participants  including  Sue  Gardner  (WMF  Executive  Director)  posed  for  an  Argentine  newspaper    Galleries,  Libraries,  Archives,  and  Museums  (GLAM),  and  Wikimedia  Love  Monument  (WLM),  is  a  project  that  is  usually  is  done  by  collaborating  with  the  relevant  institutions  to  produce  content  that  can  be  accessed  and  used  freely,  including  free  of  charge  to  the  public.  Volunteers  from  Russia  and  Spain  shared  their  experiences  in  organizing  a  photo  competition  Wikimedia  Love  monument  with  a  total  18,000  photos  in  Russia  in  Spain  collected  by  the  participants.  Some  of  the  participants  still  contribute  at  Wikimedia  Commons  even  though  the  competition  has  ended.  They  identify  that  part  of  difficult  process  in  the  competition  that  can  reduce  the  desire  to  participate  is  the  difficulty  to  upload  images  to  the  Commons  and  copyright  issues  that  preclude  the  publication  of  a

picture  of  the  work  of  the  participants.  Not  only  that,  dealing  with  the  jury  photos  also  are  not  easy,  many  times  volunteers  who  become  committee  should  contact  the  jury  to  remind  them  to  do  their  job  on  time.  In  Spain  other  obstacles  in  Wiki  Loves  Monument  project  include  participants  that  aren’t  aligned  with  the  theme.  This  includes  unrelated  photos  such  as  sunbathing  in  a  beach  and  wrote  a  statement  that  the  beach  is  within  walking  distance  of  historic  buildings,  and  many  others.  In  Russia,  winner  of  the  photo  is  not  the  best  photo,  but  instead  of  a  picture  of  a  one  a  very  historical  monument  that  now  crumbling  down.  The  jury  decided  to  award  that  with  the  goal  to  remind  the  public  and  the  government  to  preserve  the  monument.  Several  other  challenges  were  also  identified  is  in  determining  the  prize,  according  to  Spain  prize  should  be  a  fun  gift  gifts  such  as  travel  incentive  and  stay  at  the  hotel,  they  have  been  doing  gift  for  nerds  like  computers  and  electronic  devices.  While  Russia  has  a  funny  experience  on  the  prize,  the  winner  get  tickets  for  air  travel  but  they  forgot  to  fund  for  the  road  trip,  there  are  other  times  volunteers  also  forgot  element  of  travelling  cost  included  in  the  prize.      A  session  is  brought  to  document  women  in  relation  to  the  movement  of  "Free  Knowledge"  and  Wiki  in  various  countries  will  be  printed  in  Indonesia  with  funding  from  Wikimedia  Australia.  The  book  will  contain  brief  information  about  a  country,  community,  local  associations,  and  the  role  of  women  behind  it,  an  invitation  to  join  the  community,  and  the  images  of  women  who  are  active  in  the  project  Wiki.    WikiWomenCamp  2013  is  planned  to  be  held  in  Australia  since  this  event  is  an  opportunity  to  share  experiences  with  other  women  from  different  countries  freely  and  woman  in  this  case  as  a  knowledge  community.  Communication  will  be  done  by  Wikichixs  (media  wiki)  and  a  mailing  wikiwomenlist.

Summary  and  potential  collaboration  project          Contributor  with  the  nick  named  Scanner  from  Wikimedia  Argentina  introduced  a  scanner  for  books  that  are  inexpensive  and  can  be  made  (worth  about  U.S.  $  500)  for  use  by  the  university's  archives.  Wikimedia  Indonesia  expressed  interest  in  doing  something  similar  in  empowering  volunteers  and  turn  wikisumber  Indonesia  (and  other  languages).    One  Argentinian  participant  Andrea  of  Wikimedia  Argentina  expressed  interest  to  undertake  enrichment  of  the  articles  about  women  in  Wikipedia  article  in  Indonesian  and  in  Spain.  She  proposes  that  the  effort  could  use  a  google  translator  and  interwiki.  Wikimedia  Indonesia  will  try  to  explore  this  possibility  by  introducing  women  worker  community  radio  who  were  interested  in  this  issue.    Help  for  Malayalam  Wikipedia  in  Kerala  -‐  Malayalam  wikipedia  rank  and  its  volunteers  current  situation  is  similar  to  the  Javanese  language  wikipedia.

Wikimedia  Indonesia  encourages  that  Malayalam  Wikipedia  may  need  similar  outreach  like  holding  an  off  line  event  such  as  competition  to  boost  the  number  of  the  article.  Wikimedia  Indonesia  offers  to  trained    possible  volunteer  interested  in  becoming  a  committee  to  do  intensive  training  in  Jakarta.    The  book  about  female  user  perspectives  and  their  outstanding  contribution  to  Free  Knowledgewill  be  done  jointly  by  Indonesia  and  Australia,  Spain  ready  to  translate,  and  Russia  will  first  look  at  the  possibility  of  its  use  in  Russia.
