What is WAN? A Wide Area Network(WAN) is a network

that spreads over a large area such as office companies in different countries.

Eg: The Internet

Page 3: Wide Area Networks

How does WAN work? WAN is basically formed by a number of

LANs being connected together through a router or a modem.

Page 4: Wide Area Networks

WAN vs LANWAN

Works over large distances

Useful for voice

More expensive than LAN

Maximum speed of 150megabits per second

Difficult to set up

Needs a dedicated computer to direct traffic

LANCheaper than WAN

Maximum speed of 1000megabits per second

Easy to set up

Does not need a dedicated server

Connection Options

Many WANs are built for one particular organization and are private. These use fibre optic cables or private telephone wires. This has high security but is expensive

Others are built by Internet service providers (ISPs) and provide connections from an organization’s LAN to the Internet. This is very common

Evolution Of WAN WANs have existed for decades, but due

to new technology , its effect to improve business has grown drastically.

The wide area network has made it possible for companies to communicate internally in ways never before possible. Because of WANs, the consumers can enjoy benefits from companies that we wouldn’t have been able to in the past.

Page 8: Wide Area Networks

Existence of WANs WANs were originally made for services

carrying voice, not data. WANs are still used for voice services, but today they are used more frequently for data and image transmission (like videoconferencing).

Page 9: Wide Area Networks

Benefits of WAN Voice is cheap so it is useful for

overseas voice and videoconferencing Bandwidth is guaranteed Faster than internet for sending

resources. Protects data and stores and enable it

to be stored in a central server.

Bluetooth is an example of Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN).

It creates wireless links between PDAs, mobile phones, computers, media players, printers and any other devices in the range.

Page 11: Wide Area Networks

Bluetooth- How does it work? Bluetooth uses spectrum transmission

or radio waves to provide wireless links between devices.

Page 12: Wide Area Networks

Advantages and Disadvantages

Freedom from cables Uses less batteryDoesn’t need line of sight. Its cheap and extremely popularStandard even with low end devices.Simple to use

Max speed of 1MBps

Security is not great

Short range

Drains battery of devices.

Page 13: Wide Area Networks

Uses of Bluetooth The uses of Bluetooth are unlimited: Make calls from a wireless headset connected

remotely to a cell phone. Eliminate cables linking computers to printers,

keyboards, and the mouse. Hook up MP3 players wirelessly to other machines to

download music. Turn on your computer when you walk close to it,

and turn it off when you leave. Use your phone as a PowerPoint clicker. Turn off ITunes when the phone rings.
